Boring and another tourist money grab.
I know that this is a historical place in Maui, however ... it's just a cash grab if you ask us.
We were looking at taking in the sights on our recent trip and this was on the list.
Again, another place to reserve and pay entrance fee for.
We arrived there, did the 10min max walk to the viewing platform of the monument - honestly regardless of it almost always being in dreary cloudy skies, it's just a big bush on a mountain peak.
There's nothing much else to see in the park. We walked the few little trails it did have that let to boring water runs and watering holes where the locals have taken over in their next to nothing clothes. The botanical garden is an unkept overgrown tiny little section near the parking lot. NOT what we thought we would see.
It was a complete waste of an hour - IF we even stayed that long.
Seriously could've spent an hour and money elsewhere.

We made a timeslot reservation online the night before. It was an easy entry process with the QR code. There were signs saying no dogs, but there were people with dogs. It is definitely possible to get lost on the side trails. We had fun exploring, walking around, and looking for chameleons. We didn’t find any, but it was fun. We were glad we brought sweaters, raincoats, and backpacks with snacks and water.

If you are a strong hiker then you can follow an unmarked (but well-worn) trail at the overlook to see more of of the Iao needle.. You will have jump a railing but no one cares, a local said that they have been doing it for decades. The trail is not a beginner's trail or designed for families, it is dangerous so ******don't do it if it is muddy or if you are not a strong hiker!!****

This is very sacred and amazing part three accessible easy to walk wheelchair festival. Even if you can’t get out of the car you can drive around and you can see the monuments in a tribute to lotta Polynesian culture center visited the silent statues places of worship waterfalls, picnicking areas it’s just simply gorgeous to drive alone is breathtaking. A great thing about being a Maui is everything here is just only a couple miles away. This is well worth visiting.

We had planned to visit this place but wasn't sure what to expect upon our visit. Well we were blown away when we arrived and realized that this place was worth our time. We had made a reservation to enter but when we got there the girl working the gate didn't even bother to check. When you first get there you can't help but notice the Iao Needle rising majestically out of the ground. It truly is a sight but there is more to see as you have the river running through the monument and the fact there are trails that can take you deeper into the mountains should you choose to continue on your way. It was well worth our time while in Maui.

The views were amazing, the wander through the trails was easy. The forest was really lush, don't let the clouds dissuade you from going! Though it was a bit brisk, it was well worth the stop

Located in the Iao State Park, the Iao Needle is made from millions of years of wind and water erosion in the Iao Valley. Known as Kuka‘emoku, the Iao Needle was generated by lava from the extinct volcano on the island of Maui. The valley was used by the ancient Hawaiians as a army lookout; Kalanikūpule was the King of Maui and Oahu using this as a protector for his army, but then Kamehameha the Great (also Kamehameha I) unified the Hawaiian Kingdom, defeated Kalanikūpule here in the Battle of Kepaniwai. There are ancient burial cemeteries here, with Kings, like Kapawa, but it was made in secrecy so no one really knows where they are located. The Iao Needle is used for the Hawaiian God of Kāne the protector and provider of life. I definitely felt peace here and had protection from Kane. Walk around the grounds to see the Needle up close and see the river that formed the valley (and the needle) with more of its rich history about the battles here and just be surrounded with nature.

This is a very beautiful valley. Mountains are dramatic and majestic. The paved path was a simple hike/walk for our family including adults, teens and young children. It did feel a little underwhelming (paved hiking area is only about 200 yards) for the price of admission and parking. Apparently you can circumvent the fee by parking outside the gate but it wasn’t that pricey and ultimately you’re supporting a state park which is worth it. For the more adventurous there are non-paved trails that extend much farther and are worth the effort.

Be sure to make reservations, you can park inside the park there is also some street parking while it looks like you can just walk in there is a fee. We parked street side and I made a reservation while standing at the gate they were kind enough to let us in right away. It was just a short walk from the gate. We are not agile enough to climb stairs but there was a wheelchair ramp and port a pottys on site as restroom was out of order. The views here are great we were able to get quite a few nice photos before we resumed our journey. I would recommend getting a state park pass especially if you will be visiting more state parks during your visit.
