This place is fantastic! The temple is located in a cemetery, and most visitors were extremely thoughtful and kind. There were a few rowdy guests taking selfies, but it didn’t detract from the experience for long.
After paying the entry fee and crossing the bridge, visitors are invited to ring the large bell (which was originally cast in Japan)
The restrooms were clean, and the gift shop was fun and unique. Fish food was available for purchase to feed the large koi fish. All employees were kind and welcoming.
Make sure to go when it opens! Parking filled up very quickly, and we were grateful we avoided the 5 tours buses that showed up after us.

This was a great 30 minute stop we took after Kualoa Ranch back to Waikiki. We saw the temple and fed the koi fish. $5 adult, $2 children.

We were all day out exploring Oahu's eastern shore. In between sunbathing on amazing Kailua beach and on the north shore we visited this Temple.
It's a replica of a Japanese temple, set in lush greenery beneath central Oahu mountain peaks. Plenty of parking in front, 5$ pp entry fee.
Really a tranquil place you wouldn't expect to find on Hawaii islands.

This was a spare the moment stop and I’m so glad we did while we were out driving around getting to know the island that we’re planning on moving to. The grounds are amazing. be prepared to do a lot of walking where we had to park and where the temple is was a little bit of a walk we did notice people were able to do it with their canes or in their wheelchairs with minimal assistance. There is a fee per person. I just don’t remember what we paid.
The temple is gorgeous, at one of the souvenir shops just outside.
They have a penny press machine where you can press souvenir pennies. If I remember correctly it’s $.51 per penny.

We're pleased to hear that you enjoyed your spontaneous visit to the temple and appreciated the beautiful grounds, Tasha. It's great to know that accessibility was manageable for visitors with canes and wheelchairs. We hope the rest of your island exploration goes wonderfully, and we look forward to your next visit.

Serenity found! Even though it was raining most of our visit, we still found a lot of peace walking through the grounds .Ringing the bell was a highlight along with lighting the incense sticks. The baby boars sighting was a treat! The trees and flowers were magical! So happy we made this stop a part of our vacation!

My husband and I stopped here on our way to Kualoa Ranch and I highly recommend you do the same. It's limited parking, but only $5 to enter and it gets VERY crowded. Please be respectful and remove your shoes before entering the temple, I know a lot of people are unfamiliar with this concept but then complaining about it to the poor temple guide accomplishes absolutely nothing.

This is an interesting site inside a large cemetery. It is very accessible and there is a gift shop on the property. As well as the temple itself there are also gardens and ponds that are beautiful. There is plenty of parking.

Just left Oahu and we finally sent to see the Byodo Temple! You only need about 20-30 mins here. It's absolutely stunning, beautiful gardens, koi ponds and within the temple is breath taking. I recommend you go right at 9am if else by 930am the tour buses arrive and parking gets nuts. We showed up right at 9 thankfully, but the parking lot is small so I would say once 20 or so vehicles park, there's no more parking. Also they only accept card to enter, it's $5/ person. You will drive thru a cemetery to get to the temple.

Do you have to pay online? An you pay at the place (maybe in a kiosk or the gift shop?)

Do you have to pay to go inside of it? Or do you have to pay to drive up and see the out sode of it? Do they have a military discount?
Skrevet 25. februar 2022
Yes, an admission fee is charged to enter the temple grounds. There is no mention of a military discount on their website but the general admission is only $5 ($4 for seniors and $2 for children ages 2-12).

Do I need to sign a form for photography permit and pay a fee if I am just a visitor?
Skrevet 26. august 2019
There is an entrance fee to get up to the temple, but not for the cemetery grounds. I took photos everywhere without photograph permission.
Skrevet 26. august 2019
No, there are many cats wandering around freely.

We are staying in Aulani this summer and planned on visiting Kualoa Ranch and the Temple in the same day. I believe the temple is on the way to Aulani from the Ranch? Where is a nice place to stop for lunch AFTER the ranch but before the Temple? Thanks!
Skrevet 31. januar 2018
You could eat at the Ranch, but I'd say travel down the road a half mile from the temple and go to Mike's Huli Chicken. It's probably some of the best food on the eastern side of the island.

Is there a better time of day to go and avoid large(r) crowds?
Skrevet 24. april 2017
I think around 10:00 would be best time to go there. Visiting there from Waikiki area must need to use high way, such as H1. In my experience, until 9:00am has heavy traffic jam, so leaving around 9:30 to go to the place will be best time for you. After that you may enjoy Windward mall which locates 10 minutes from Byodoin.

Does this Temple have rules regarding visitors with tattoos? I know that some traditional Japanese temples do not allow guests with tattoos and would hate to be turned away from visiting.
Skrevet 24. september 2016
No, I saw no such rules and I myself have many tattoos.
