サンフランシスコからフェリーで行かないといけない場所ですが、そんなにたどり着くのに時間はかかりませんでした。ニューヨークのエリス島のように、歴史を学べました。

I'd read "Shanghai Girls" so wanted to visit the place so vividly depicted in the novel. Plus, I'd recently been to Ellis Island, where my family landed so long ago.

The tour is sobering as it touches on the exclusion policies. Seeing depictions of barracks life and the foreign writing etched into the tired old wooden walls again made me realize how much people sacrificed for a better life.

The setting on Angel Island is idyllic. Miles away from the chaos of the city, yet you can hear distant fog horns and train whistles.

There is much to explore here, both historic and scenic. I'm very glad I spent the day here.

Get a docent to lead your tour as you find out fascinating stories and an honest appraisal of what happened here. Take the tram from the ferry if you don’t want to walk uphill—$8 is worth it. Very interesting displays of how life was for the immigrants.

Many people do not realize that the exclusion act made immigrantion difficult for people from Asian countries. When they came to America, some people were interrogated and detained for months and even years. From 1900 to WW2 this is where it happened.

If you go be aware that it is a walk of about a mile and then there is a lot of walking on the site itself. One needs to time the ferry, the walk, the site visit and the walk to return to the ferry. The museum is only open a few days a week. There is no food at the site so it is best to pack a light lunch and water and choose a cool day. All this preparation is worth it as in their angst, the immigrants wrote poems upon the dormitory walls. One can see rooms set up for men and women as families were divided. There is a touching rememberance wall where families have listed their ancestors and some of the difficulties they endured to become Americans.

A must see on Angel Island, the US Immigration Station which is a preserved building that has history within its walls, You actually sense the feelings of the thousands immigrants who came through the doors of this building, and get a glimpse of what they must have felt, and the hardships of the actual process of waiting, before being allowed to enter the United State. To be able to stand right where immigrants stood years ago, is a most amazing experience. Having gone through the museum on two separate occasions, once on a self-guided tour, and once a private group tour given by a ranger, Either way it is incredibly interesting, but with the guided tour with the insight, the antidotes and the history, given by the Park Ranger, makes the experience have more of an impact. What makes going here also so amazing, is the contrast of how you truly feel the hardships and sorrow of the immigration system in this building, and the you see the dramatically beautiful and breathtaking the surroundings all around you.

The trip on the ferry to Angel island is a fantastic tour of the bay. Angel Island affords itself of great hikes and an unforgettable visit to the Immigration station. I recommend you read “ Shanghai Girls “ before your visit. It will give you a historical perspective of the Island.

Went here on our trip to San Francisco. Took ferry from on Pier 41 which gives you great views of Alcatraz, Golden Gate, and SF skyline.

Key tip: At the cafe you can pay $7 for a round trip shuttle to the immigration station (much cheaper that island tram ride). Gives you two hours at the site. First shuttle leaves at 10:30. The station museum only takes cash. Admission is $5 for self guided tour.

The station was really well done and provoked a lot of feelings. I liked the bunks and relics that they had collected and video in Mess Hall helped connect to specific people as well. It really connected me to immigration and our current issues with it and reminded me a lot of visiting Dachau in Germany. I highly recommend and personally found the poetry the most touching.

There are great views of the bay from the cove and lots of sailboats were visible the day we went.

We stayed two hours between shuttles which about 30 mins more than we needed. Arrived back in time to eat lunch at cafe and catch the 2:20 ferry back. It was a great day!

We took a quick ferry ride over from Embarcadero. Once you get off, there’s a short cut to the detention center that involves walking up some stairs and a short walk. Admission is $5 for a self guided tour. You walk through the rooms where Asians, Europeans and even Africans were detained before they could go to San Francisco. There are examples of the interview questions, sleeping quarters, shoes used for foot binding and lots of other relics of the immigrant experience. Although I couldn’t read the Chinese poetry carved on the walls, it was heart breaking to imagine the struggles for these people who went through so much in search of a better life.

EVERYONE should go here - and not to hike but to take the tour and remember how immigrants to the US were discriminated against in the past -- sound familiar??
The tour is long but extremely informative - we learned so much about the history of the Asian immigrants to the US.
[To get here .... we took the ferry from Tiberon - then catch the shuttle - long walk uphill so catch the shuttle. get shuttle tickets in the cafe.]

I had the pleasure of going to Angel Island Immigration Station for a professional development workshop for teachers and it was incredible. The stories from Angel Island are often overlooked in our national narrative, and going here is a truly enlightening experience. The boat ride to and from the island is also quite pleasant and provides great views of the bay, the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and the San Francisco skyline. If you've ever been to Ellis Island, a visit to Angel Island will provide you with a different perspective of what entering America was like for hundreds of thousands.
