This temple was founded in 1849. The Benevolence society housed here is where prayers are made for loved ones.
Here we burned joss paper of gold, silver and money for fiancées parents and grand parents. Joss paper, also known as spirit money is burned for Chinese ancestor or at worship ceremonies.
It is common practice to burn incense or joss sticks before several alters. During our visit we observed others paying respect. They knelt down to pray and deliver offerings of fruit, wine and food.
I read and article, that in 1948 Bess Truman visited the temple where she prayed for positive results for her husband Harry Truman's run for President. At his time the election predictions were not positive for her husband. While there, she held a container of Kau cim sticks, and shook them until one of the sticks fell to the ground. This stick was then exchanged for a piece of paper, which told a story, offering insight to her question. The prediction was favorable, The prediction slip is on display in the Temple
These Rites have long been a tradition in China.

It claims to be one of the oldest temple in US. Temple timing is from 9-4. It's not that big and is on 3rd floor.

We have two temples in San Francisco that claim to be the oldest Chinese temple in the US (the other being the Tin Hau Temple on Waverly). Both seem to cater to the occasional tourist rather than any practicing members of their faith.
For starters --- NO PHOTOS ALLOWED --- in the building or within 100 feet of the building. I did snap one picture before I was advised of the no-pictures rule. Anyway, this is a relatively new building; the temple has been here since 1977, so pictures (above) are not overly impressive.
So for my visit --- you climb the stairs; make a small donation; the lady takes you around to place incense at each station; nice 10-15 minute excursion that you can mention to your friends when you get home.
Should you make a special trip to see this temple (i.e. a "4"); no. I like Tin Hau on Waverly better, especially since they let you take pictures of the city from their balcony.

You cannot take pictures or video, but this nice little temple is worth a visit if you you can find it.
We visited on Christmas and I am glad we did.
