We decided to give this a go when we were in San Francisco and it was absolutely brilliant! We didn't really know what to expect meeting Countess Lola in a park in China town but it was such a great day. She is an absolute fountain of knowledge on the history of the city and takes you to some great locations. We visited a fortune cookie factory, a temple we would never have known was there, haunted vaults under a shop, and heard so many fascinating stories. The Countess is lovely and very nice to chat to. It is hilarious seeing all the double takes as you walk around the city with her, she got a couple of snarky sounding comments in Chinese while in China Town and replied right back in fluent Mandarin (?) which was a definite surprise! Great value for the length of the tour and the sheer amount of information provided. Not a family activity though, quite a few of her stories are not for kids! So glad we did it.

Our family of three (including a not easily impressed 18yo daughter) LOVED our tour with Lola Montez (aka Rick Shelton). At first we weren't too sure what we were getting into but we learned about the history and people (more so the underbelly of the city) from Countess Lola who certainly was a show stopper!
We visited off the beaten path locations such as a fortune cookie factory and a Buddhist temple where we had our fortune read by the lady upstairs using sticks. We were even able to visit a secret underground tunnel. Countess Lola was a font of information--very knowledgeable and somehow was able to make the historically accurate "juicy", like a tabloid. On the rare occasion that Lola did not know the answer, resources were provided. Very very good--highly recommended! (Just make sure to dress in comfortable shoes--this is a 2.5 hour walk with lots of standing, walking and steps up to the Buddhist shrine(.

This is the best tour I have ever taken. Lola was fabulous, entertaining and a great story teller. My friend and I had a wonderful time and talked about how good it was for the rest of our vacation. We learned a lot about the history of San Francisco and would take this tour again just because it was so enjoyable.

My wife and I were a bit apprehensive about a walking tour with a 'drag queen', but we decided it is San Francisco, and we wanted to do something 'different' when the cruise ship stopped in San Francisco for the day.
'Lola' was fun and interesting. He (his real name is Rick, but everyone called him Lola) dressed the part of an 1880's saloon singer and was very informative on the history of San Francisco. We walked around Chinatown and North Beach and he told stories along the way (be prepared to walk fast and cover about three miles in two+ hours). He talked about the discovery of San Francisco, the gold rush days, the sailors and immigrants, the earthquake and especially about the 'girls of the evening' (don't go if you are easily offended by his talking about the sex trade in the early city).
It was enjoyable, interesting and educational. It is not for young children or adults that have a hard time walking fast or climbing steps (we actually went into part of an old abandoned tunnel inside the basement of a book store in North Beach).
We found his tour on Groupon, and it was well worth the money.
