Make sure you have a full tank in the morning before setting off. Grab the ice cooler and make sure you have food and water in it. After you get in the park, make sure you head to the bathroom.
It is going to take at least three to four hours to truly appreciate this place.
Make sure the phones are charged up and you have brought charging cables. I know it sounds stupid but . . .
If/when you get out to walk around, watch out for rattlesnakes. They do not have to coil or rattle to strike.
Beautiful place.
Give the bison plenty of room. They are wild and will mess up your vehicle.

Driving in from Mitchell we took Hwy 240 south at the Interior exit - to do the Badlands Loop Scenic Byway. We followed this road through part of the Badlands and ended in Wall, SD. Very nice drive with several stopping areas including a short hike (walk) to the "door".

Stunning geological formations along a loop road. Wildlife (prairie dogs, coyotes, bighorn sheep, antelope, bison, elk) all sighted during our visit. Excellent roadway and turnouts with good markers. The scenery changes from before sunrise through the daylight hours with varying colors and formations. Enjoy a half day or longer in this National Park. Signs warning of rattlesnakes are necessary but unnerving! Park rangers were friendly and knowledgeable.

“My favorite thing is to go where I’ve never been.”- Diane Arbus
The Badlands, by the Lakota Sioux, was termed, mako shika, “the bad lands.” Even the French-Canadian fur trappers years later tagged the area, les mauvaises terres`a traverser, “bad lands to travel across.”
The Badlands became a new discovery for me during the last leg of the road trip with the girls. This 244,000-acre park awakened my sense of the visual and my general being. As we entered the park, to the right in the mixed grass prairie, we saw a small herd of bison grazing.
Following the easy and well paved major roads in the park, we began our almost two-hour journey due the constant stops at the pull outs or parking spots that allowed us to walk out and take photos as we got up close and personal with nature. With so many buttes, canyons, pinnacles, and spires, you just cannot drive by and not take notice. The Badlands has its own beauty that made me feel as though the earth opened and pushed everything from inside itself, outward. Beside bison, the area is also home to bighorn sheep, prairie dogs and black footed ferrets.
There are two visitor centers with the least visited and fewer services at the south unit. We stopped at the Ben Reifel Visitor Center where paleontologists conduct fossil preparation of items found in the park. The rangers are on hand to answer questions, help you plan hiking trips or answer general questions. The suggested best times of the year to visit the Badlands are April, May, September, and October.

With the rock formations and red along the wall, you can see why this became a national park. Beautiful scenery combing rock hills and prairies. An interesting drive through the rocks and down the hill to the visitor's center. A great park to visit.

This National Park and the formations in it are unlike any other park I have ever been too! This park has so many breath taking views and the road that runs through it is fun to drive as well with the curves and elevation changes. This is a must see destination!

I would normally describe this area as barren, yet it is also beautiful. We thoroughly enjoyed spending two days taking in all of the park. One day we hiked several of the short trails near the NE park entrance to some spectacular viewpoints. The second day we drove the main park road round trip, stopping at every viewpoint and taking time to really look at the view. It took us four hours to drive the 44 miles round trip. If you have the time, it is well worth it. As an added bonus, there are several places to pull off and watch the Prarie Dogs. We also saw a few bison and big horn sheep.

We enjoyed this Park for 2 nights staying at the Cedar Pass Cabins in the Park. Large visitor center with friendly rangers and large gift shop. In our opinion, the nicest part of the Park is when you enter near the visitor center area. The Views are SUPERB! Plenty of pull offs to read the park plaques and do a hike, whether you choose easy or strenuous. Carry water as it’s hot and sunny, with no shade.

Badlands national park is like a canyon, with the moon reflecting its geography onto the ground. Just amazing books and crannies. We hiked Door trail and Window trail Go early It’s cooler Less crowded and easier to park and hike Have fun

Every turn presented a new vista and such unique geology. The landscape was absolutely stunning, while photos will serve as wonderful memories - they just don't capture the wonder of the natural rock formations.
A must-see National Park.

We will be coming from Valentine, NE with our Airbnb in keystone, sd. We are deciding whether or not to go straight north to hit the interstate, go north for a bit and take hwy 44, or going west to Chadron then up north. Google maps says going through Pine Ridge is the fastest but I do t want to do that and I heard that the road might even be closed because they are trying to keep COVID out. Is going north through Rosebud an option. Roads are open? I’m assuming it will not be nearly as depressing as traveling through Pine Ridge, is that correct? Chadron is the longest way and since we will be canoeing in the morning, my kids will be really cranky if we take any longer than necessary.
Thanks.

I am not familiar with one of the routes you mention, my wife and I drove across the interstate to Keystone with a short stay in Wall to visit the Badlands from there. The Badlands are a little farther from Keystone than from Wall, but food choices and accomodations are much better in Keystone. Also, there are many attractions close to and in Keystone that may be of interest to you and your children, depending on their ages. I hope this helps you and I wish you a very pleasant and enjoyable vacation.

I’m fearful of steep / scary drives within the mountain ranges. How is the drive through the Badlands?

We hate the crazy, steep, scary roads too. This is nothing like that and you will regret not driving through if you don't!

Is it ok to drive a travel trailer camper (med-sized) on The Loop road? I read it's a 2 lane paved road, so I'm thinking that it should be ok. Can anyone confirm?

Sorry for taking so long to respond. I saw mid-size camper vehicles on the Loop Road in early July 2019, when I visited the National Park. I would not attempt to drive the Loop Road in the winter months with a larger vehicle, when the road might be icy or snow covered.

You can drive through the Park and stop along the way to take pictures several times in about 2 hours.

I don’t think so, but they will give you plenty of info at the Ben Reifel visitor centre. When you are there have a look at the working fossil lab.

Is the whole Sage Creek Road unpaved? Concerned about driving this as we will be in a rental car.

Yes, the road is improved gravel, however I would not hesitate to drive a rental on it as the road is good. Prairie dogs? Yes BUNCHES of them on the regular loop road not far from the car. That is the neat thing about this Park. You can drive slowly, see the entire thing and not miss the wildlife. We saw three different groups of wild Rocky Mountain Bighorn sheep. One group was rams and were sop close I got my wife's picture with one ram, which is simply unheard of. These are wild high mountain animals, but here, they are unafraid. One person says these are mountain goats. NO mountain goats. Bighorn Sheep.

We will be visiting the Badlands in the early morning hours for just 2 short hours. We do plan on driving the loop road. Any recommendations for the best scenic overlooks as we will be short on time?

If you're only making one stop, then it's no contest - Pinnacles Overlook is where you go, especially at sunrise or sunset. We stopped at all of the rest, and Doors and Windows was a great short hike, but the majestic, sweeping views you get from the Pinnacles Overlook are unlike anything else in the park. We drove the park in the afternoon, came back that night for a stargazing party, and I was so impressed that I got up at 5am local time to return to the park for sunrise - and I stopped at Pinnacles. It was totally worth it.
I also think the Visitor Centers are worth short visits, especially if you have kids with you.
