I visited Asheville in May of 2020 during the panademic so things were pretty quiet around town. I found Asheville to be a very interesting city with so much history and historic buildings. I found many comments about the Vance Mounument in Pack Square and the animal sculptures to be negative and not to really bother making the stop or going out of you way. I wish people would research history and things they see, then these things may have more meaning. It sadden me to hear that Vance mounument was torn down and removed this year in May 2021.......I know it has been controversial for a number of years and after the year we had in 2020 it became even more of a hot topic to remove many of our monuments. If one researched more about Zebulon Vance you would find more insight to who he was and the times he lived in and what was going on in our country. Our country was still early in the birth of this nation and although many things that occured at the time are not pretty and awful, its still our history and sometimes our monuments are not always about honoring a particular person but a reminder for us all to be a better people and learn from our past. Unfortunately even in 2021 as a nation and as a people we have done some pretty awful things to people of all skin colors and backgrounds. Seems we all need to ask the question have we really come that far or evolved from the early years of our nation as a people and a society? As far as the animal sculptures, this sculpture represents a bed of a road (The Buncombe Turnpike) that was once traveled by Native Americans and later, by drovers who herded livestock across the mountains from Tennessee to southern markets, taking turkeys, pigs and cows as far as Charleston. The embedded rails (former Asheville Trolley tracks) represent the coming of the railroad (1880) and the electrict trolley (1889).

This monument has been torn down, and replaced with nothing. It is now just an eyesore in the heart of Asheville. Seems to me that the city should have planned to replace it ASAP so it doesn’t look like this:

It dominates the square, but you can’t read the plagues, or appreciate it, because it is wrapped in black to protect it from the vandalism which has troubled this city recently.

You can’t miss it when walking through downtown Asheville. Interesting enough to stop and read the plaque and appreciate the soul who is honored. As others say, don’t go out of your way to find it.

This monument is in the center of town which is there for a Confederate. It is a part of history and has been there since the late 1800's. It resembles a mini Washington monument.

The monument is not well explained. Has bronze animals at its base. Why? Animals more interesting than the monument.

I enjoyed learning about the man for whom this was built. It sparked my interest to learn more about him, the history of Ashville, and the time period. Not much to say about the monument itself. There are some nice places to take in views but overall nothing to really comment about.

The Vance Monument is a part of Pack Square and tends to be a meeting place or where people hang around. The monument to the controversial because Vance was on the Confederate side. The bronze animals near the monument are more interesting to look at.

Sat outside in this little park, the monument itself is nice, but the HUGE water fountain display behind it was beautiful. Nice to sit and eat your ice cream out there.

My husband and I were in downtown Asheville and saw this monument. When we got home, I wanted to look up the significance of the Vance monument. He was a former governor of NC and Confederate General. He is buried at Riverside Cemetery. He died in 1894. My husband was also curious about the bronze pig statues at the base of this monument. It’s probably not a structure that you need to seek out, but due to it’s height, you may come across it while in Asheville.
