George's Island wasn't what I expected. I don't feel like the other reviews really capture this place. The island is pretty much made up entirely of a huge, abandoned old fort. Once you're dropped off by the ferry, you're stuck there for a couple of hours. The visitor center doesn't have much - a brief overview only, and it's good for maybe 10-15 minutes. Then what? You need to go exploring and wandering around on your own through dark, spooky tunnels. Open up doors to unexpected creepy old rooms that almost seem haunted. Take unusual photos with interesting lighting and peeling paint. Jump out and frighten your significant other to make them scream. We went in October, and the island was almost deserted. There were only 20 of us on the ferry, and then we all scattered in our own directions. You really don't want to miss that last ferry and get stuck on the island. Even the few park rangers leave at night.

This was quite a trip - relaxing boat ride out to the island followed by several hours touring the fort. You do need to be careful walking inside the fort as many places are quite dark so a small compact fashlight is recommended. There is a food shack right off the pier thats serves great food or you can pack a fmmaily picnic and enjoy the views of Boston Harbor

We took the ferry and visited Georges Island. It was a beautiful August day, and both the boat ride and the time on the islands was a welcome change from the urban hustle and bustle of Boston. We traveled with four kids - ages 5 to 11. The fort on Georges Island is well worth exploring. The visitor center provides a great overview and introduction. The fort itself has many hidden staircases perfect for exploring and a wide open parade ground perfect for running and playing. Our kids really enjoyed the fort.

The cruise over was nice. The boat had select food and drink aboard. The island was very clean and a fun place to walk around and pushing a stroller was pretty easy. I definitely suggest bringing a picnic lunch. The island has a very small menu for food. You can explore many of the rooms and walk up many different staircases. There is a tunnel you can go through. It was a very fun place for my 1.5 year old too along with his grandparents.

Beautiful day, packed a lunch and set out for a 40 minute ride out to George's. After the Visitor's Center, we took our time exploring the fort, Fort Warren. There are many rooms to explore from the inside of the fort with information signs to give an idea of how the space was used. The fort takes up most of the island so it's pretty sizeable. You can walk on top of most of the ramparts and in many areas there are great views of the harbor. There are many picnic tables, comfortable Adirondack plastic chairs, and even a few hammocks scattered around the island. There is a snack bar, but bring your lunch and have a great picnic and extend your stay. On weekdays, Boston Harbor Cruises take you there on the even hours and back to Long Wharf on the odd numbered hours on weekdays. Check their website for more info. Don't forget, this trip may be covered by a two for one pass through your public library.

After asking these “rangers” if the island was open until sunset as posted they confirmed it indeed was. After making us wait 45 minutes to dock we finally were hurried to do so at 5pm, just as their worker boat arrived to scurry them away for the night. The word useless comes to mind when recalling their help. Just a classic government drone collecting a paycheck then running away at the end of the night. Mass Parks you should be ashamed. 0/10 would not recommend.

We come here each summer and each year it seems like the ferry schedule gets leaner. If you want to get to another island during the week, forget it unless it's Lovell's. No service from Hull anymore. The islands used to be so much more accessible.
If you're spending the day, bring your lunch. There are grills and picnic tables all around. Don't count on anything from the 'snack bar'. No hot food except a hot dog or a cup of noodles. No burgers, no fries. A chicken salad or lobster wrap is your choice depending on what day it is. Four bucks for a small gatorade. I accept that I'm going to get ripped off at places like this, and that the offerings are not going to be anything special. But this place would be better served with some vending machines and microwaves compared to what is offered now.

I took the ferry from Boston to the island and spent about 2.5 hours here. There are nice views of the city and plenty of chairs and picnic tables to sit and relax. The fort is cool and creepy to explore. I enjoyed going through all of the dark passageways and the fort was much cooler inside than the hot July sun outside.

We took the ferry out here on a Sunday morning for a picnic and tour of the grounds. There are a number of picnic tables where you can have lunch (and a couple of charcoal grills) located a short walk from the ferry dock. It is important to know that Georges Island does not have garbage cans, so you have to carry off what you carry on. Pack light!
After lunch, we wandered around the Visitor Center for a bit before our tour. There is a lot to see in the Visitor Center, so take your time!
Our tour and tour guide was ok. We were told that each tour guide brings their own theme to their tour of Georges Island, and ours was about the time the island was a prison and a hospital during the Civil War. My only criticism is that it would be nice if Georges Island posted what the theme of each tour was going to be, that way, if you are more interested in one tour guide's topic over another, you know which tour and time you want to go on.
Other than that, the staff on the island did a great job of announcing the incoming ferries and what islands they were going to or when the ferry back to Boston was. We had a great time and want to go visit more islands soon!
If you go in the summer, make sure you put on sunscreen and drink a lot of water. There was one refillable water bottle station behind the bathrooms, but it was broken. The visitor stand (where the tour starts) had 3 large water containers (like what you see at sports games), and a lot of people were refilling from there.

We went for the Free Ferry day and had a great time. As a couple, 2 hours was perfect for us to leisurely stroll around the whole island. As a family, you could probably spend a day here with a picnic lunch. The fort was cool and interesting to see. I definitely recommend packing lunch/snacks and water. We plan to check out Spectacle Island next.

Does anyone know of a way to get out to Georges Island? A few years ago Boston Harbor Cruises had a Winter ferry, but no more. Is there any other option? Can the public more at the Georges Island dock?

Can a volleyball net be setup to play?
Boston Harbor Now
Boston, MA
You can set up a volleyball net on the islands but George's Island is not a place for that. On the other hand, Spectacle Island and Bumpkin Island are good places to play volleyball.
Are dogs welcome?
