So the interior is not original to the history that brought me here, but anytime you can walk in the footsteps of John Hancock and Dr. Joseph Warren is a cool thing. Just being at the site where people decided and largely fed the grass roots movement leading to the Revolution. In this place, the Boston tea party was sparked and the political thoughts for the birth of the nation were cultivated. Very interesting layout inside, but it's more just about being in the same building as some amazing people.

We arrived a few minutes after the docent had begun speaking about the Old South Meeting House and we were very impressed with how much we learned in less than 20 minutes. She did an excellent job explaining what led to the Boston Tea Party and how Boston operated as a Puritan community.

One of the oldest colonial buildings in town. Lots of history here. Located in the middle of the skyscrapers downtown. Very much on the Freedom Trail, so there were lots of tour groups and tourists all around. A pleasant square out front.

This is another famous Colonial and Freedom Trail site for Boston that is a must-see visit. While the last 100 years, the building has served as civic meeting hall and historic site for the community, its origins are as the brick church of the Old South Congregational Church built in 1729 that splintered from the First Church in 1669. In 1872, the congregation left the historic structure to relocate in Boston's newest Back Bay neighborhood adjacent to Copley Square.
The significance of the building is it was the largest meeting space in the city of Boston during the Revolutionary era. As such it was often the gathering place of many meetings of the Sons of Liberty and most significantly the meeting that launched the Boston Tea Party in 1773. It also held the annual commemorations for the Boston Massacre in the community after it happened in 1770. For these reasons, in the occupation of Boston after Lexington and Concord in April of 1775, the British army seized control of the building and used as a stable.
There is a cost to visit the interior, but you can purchase a combo ticket with the Old State House at a discounted rate. I highly recommend seeing the interior to really understand the building and its colonial use. The outside is a large and strong red brick, but it belies just how big the structure is. Until you go inside, you don't realize how big this building is and why its size was so important for the colonial cause. There is really nothing that comes close as Faneuil Hall was only 40% of its current size during the colonial era. In addition to the space, the interior has historic information and displays and most importantly for our group, a clean, public restroom. Of particular interest is a diorama that shows colonial Boston with the size of the buildings in the central business and port district which emphasize the importance of Old South Church to the colonial cause.

So much history here to take in and appreciate! The exhibits are great, but just being able to enter such a place and look around at its layout and furnishings is another step towards understanding how important this meeting house was in the American colonial and revolutionary experience.

It was built in 1729 as a Puritan meeting house, or church, the Old South Meeting House has been an important gathering place for nearly three centuries. It is somewhat surrounded by more modern buildings but its history protects it. Not too much to see inside but worth a visit. So many historic decisions/actions etc taken here.

As part of my trip to Boston, I visited the Old South Meeting House. Managed by Revolutionary Spaces – one fee of $15 covers two day admission to the Old South Meeting House and the nearby Old State House.
Free with your admission are docent led tours – sign up early as only one to two tours take place each day and are capped at 20 people/tour. The tour titled "Slavery and Resistance in Colonial America" starts from the Old South Meeting House and ends at the Old State House where you can take a tour, "Massacre and Memory Tour" that takes you back to the Old South Meeting House. I enjoyed visiting both locations which also hold short gallery talks. It was interesting learning how the Old South Meeting House started as a Puritan church and evolved to a political meeting house.
VACATION TIP: This is a less costly alternative to the commercial Freedom Trail tours that are more expensive and may not include admission to either building. You will also be supporting Revolutionary Spaces that hosts many educational programs.

This is hard place to review because there’s a lot of history here. A lot involving the history of the nation occurred inside this place of worship turned meeting hall. However, that said, this is all there is to see here inside. There is a big meeting hall with some descriptive displays. That’s it. You can see it in 5 minutes of read everything and make it 20. Gift adds 5 minutes, super small and limited. So for history’s sake its good to come and be where these important things happened. But…especially if you are several people…it may not add up as effective for the budget-conscious. It costs me and my three varying age kids $30 to come here and that was with student discounts etc. For the money to visit and the time you’ll be here and what it is it’s rather costly.

Thank you so much for visiting our historic site. We're sorry that your experience didn't feel worth the cost. Next time, we hope you will take us up on our gallery talks or tours, which are complimentary with your admission. Either of these options provide a more in depth history of the building and its significance, provided by a dedicate historian on our staff.

A nice collection of artifacts, a well-restored significant structure, and some very thought-provoking interpretive signage. General admission is only $10 for an adult, free with vet's ID. Thankfully, on an extremally hot day, it was comfortable inside as well. Nice staff and an OK gift shop.

A lot of important events in the pre and post Revolutionary War took place at the Meeting House. The church is pretty large, but the pews are pretty simple. There are a lot of exhibits (mainly text) that explain the events.
