We are pleasure boaters and reserved a mooring on dock wave and the campsite . IF YOU ARE PLEASURE BOATING DO NOT CAMP ON THE ISLAND AND THE PARK RANGERS BARLEY LET ME DOCK TO UNLOAD BECAUSE THE FERRYS TAKE PRIORITY. The Logistics from the dock to the campsite from the morning to the beach into the campsite were terrible paths / trails Were marked poorly The rangers were unhelpful and rude. I suppose if you were taking the ferry into camp would be better. It was a Carol experience and they just shouldn’t allow pleasure boaters if they’re going to torture us to be there

Used to go every year to harbour islands (bumpkin/Peddocks) with friends from highschool since the 90s. this is one of my favourite things to do- camping on this island for a long weekend or a few days during the week with friends in summer. I’d give it 5*s but:
Unfortunately since the pandemic you can no longer get a boat from long warf which is a real disappointment for us Bostonians without cars. Finally made it out. Love the island and staying there but with the current ferry setup it’s really hindered our being able to get out there and the booking system needs a healthy dose of tlc.
I am hoping they reopen the longwarf connection through George’s so I don’t have to keep harrassing my two friends with cars and kids. It’s making it a bit prohibitive for those of us with less means and abilities. Please please please reopen boston connection - it is after all the boston harbour islands, rather than the hingham harbour islands 💜

This was in all aspects a 5 star adventure (minus the mosquitoes). From the Ferry captain to the park ranger to the care taker. Everyone was so accommodating, and friendly. We stayed in a yurt, which had 2 fans, a large table and bunk beds. The islands history was fascinating, basic info was provided, however more in depth was available though the visitor center and the employees. I have to give a shout out to Paul, who truly cares about all visitors and this island. Highly recommend this trip to anyone, from adults, to college kids, to families with young kids

We were part of an REI island camping trip on what would turn out to be in the middle of the great heat wave of Summer 2019 (of course, no one knew that when we all signed up months before). Despite the heat, the REI staff took great care of us, occupying us with excellent activities such as kayaking, wilderness survival training, outdoor cooking lessons, compass navigation class, and the like. The island was very nice, and easy to hike. Enough trees to find shade during the blistering sun. The small visitor's center was staffed and presents the history of the island, especially its use as a military base in the past. The now-empty mortar and cannon emplacements are still there, and nicely signed for visitors. The rangers were very helpful and knowledgeable about the island and history. We witnessed a wedding party use the cute little chapel for their ceremony, and they quickly hightailed it out of the heat back to their ferry as quickly as they could. We would go back there again, but probably wait until cooler seasons.

If you have a chance to get out to the islands do not skip peddocks. Lots of walking trails. Lots of history and hidden treasure. Great to sit and enjoys the boats going by or a night of camping.

One can get to Paddocks either through Georges island or directly. It is one of larger and diverse island (home for natives, military pows, farmers and fishermen)at the entrance to Boston Harbour where one can enjoy thedeaches, salt marshes, hiking trails and historic buildings.

We really wanted to love our camping experience, it was just too hot to do much. We arrived by ferry and the hiking to the campground is about 15 minutes with all your luggage UPHILL! It was very hot over 90 degrees and slim to no breeze, so you can imagine hiking up hills already struggling with luggage and kids. Once we reached the top we just decided not to venture far. We used the wheel barrows at the dock to help with our hike uphill and we still struggled. The road is very rocky and only partly paved.
We had yurt #4 and tent site #4 for our party of 7 for one night. The tent site had no electricity. The Yurt had electricity, a floor fan and a lamp. The lamp did not work, wasn't aware we had to bring bulbs or maybe it was just not working. We wiped down the beds and table after the last guest as we weren't sure if there was a housekeeping crew, nor did one show up after we checked in. Not sure how often the Yurt's are maintained as we had an inoperable lamp, under the bunks were filthy and only one outlet worked although there were 2. I expected these issues with a tent site not a yurt. I mean why offer better accommodations if they really aren't better. After all you are charged a lot more to rent a yurt I should be fully operationally.
It looked like the Yurts had the grills. If you had a tent site then you would have to use a grill in front of a yurt which could be kind of awkward cooking in front of strangers. There were a couple of water fountains and faucets around the camp site. This was my third time camping. My other times our tent sites had an electrical outlet and a water faucet to ourselves. So Peddocks has a different setup where water and grills are for the community first come first serve and electricity are for the yurts.
A big disappointment was the compostable toilet near the campground. I read other reviews that said it was squeaking clean. Well not the case with our visit. The outside looks so nice and clean, but when you open the door, WATCH OUT!. There were black flies and smelled of strong urine and feces, it was super hot in there too. They have a record hanging up of the last time it was cleaned. Well, the toilet was last cleaned on 7/6/18 then again on 7/11/18, except that it was now 8/3/18 when we were camping!!!!!! Not sure why the cleaning just suddenly stopped during the busiest time of the season. We would walk to the Welcome Center to use that bathroom, which was very clean and smelled great. The Welcome Center's last cleaning was 8/1/18, which was fine with us as it was only 8/3/18. But still quite a walk in sweltering heat if you don't want to use a bush. We told the Park Ranger about the dirty bathroom, but she didn't seem to work on that part. The Ranger just said she would let "Operations" know.
The yurt would have been great if everything was working in it. Hopefully it wont be as hot when you visit. The yurt is even hotter than outside even with the windows open. And the floor fan does not help in that heat. We were thankful when the sun went down.
They call it luxury camping, I guess if they properly maintained it. Just not sure how often the place is cleaned as there are mattresses in the yurts. I would think mattresses would have to be maintained every so often for bugs and sanitation. And yes there is a lot of airplane noise, but we live in Boston so nothing we aren't use to. Its just louder when you are living in a tent.
I would try it again on a cooler day, after I hear the maintenance issues have been resolved.

We had amazing weather so that is key! Yurts were clean and simple. Had 4 kids and 2 adults. Very comfortable. Island is lovely to spend a day at the beach and walking around. Next year, look forward to 2 nights, spending a day exploring the other islands with the loop ferry boat.

Peddock's Island is among the largest of Boston Harbor's many islands. Because of that it has both one of the richest histories and most varied landscapes of any of the islands. The defunct Fort Andrews occupies the end of the island, East Head, closest to the town of Hull and near both the visitor center, the docks, and the overnight yurts (available for rent). Many of the Fort's buildings remain standing, but are, unfortunately, closed to the public. Still, it is interesting to stroll around the barracks and batteries that made up the life of the island during the first half of the 20th century. This end of the island is heavily wooded, with cliffs overlooking the ocean. There are clean, sturdy, comfortable hammocks set up near the old chapel that demand to be used. The other end of the island is less developed, wilder, with rocky beaches, dense shrubbery, a fresh water marsh, and mud flats. In between are privately owned cottages that, though a rich part of the islands history, probably won't be around for much longer, as their ownership reverts to the state as residents leave or die off. Several cottages have already been demolished and others are condemned. They are a vestige of a Portuguese fishing village that once made Peddock's home. Certainly not everyone would get much pleasure out of the quiet seclusion of an island like this, remote and primitive. As close as it is to Hull, Quincy, and Boston, there is not much to do. But for anyone seeking solitude, quiet, beautiful nautical vistas, and long, meandering walks, Peddock's makes a unique spot. I circled the entire island, by-passing only the lonely isthmus called Prince Head, thoroughly enjoying the walk. There are a variety of berries found on the island, as well as apple and beach plum trees. Beware of the poison ivy, which abounds. I would advise bringing food and water for any stay of a few hours as there are no stores or restaurants on the island. Ferries are available both from Boston, via Spectacle Island, and Hingham; you should find the islands rangers informative, friendly, and eager to help.

This island is not to be missed. Such unspoiled amazing shoreline and amazing history, camping (in yurts!) and sprinkle some Summer residents in for good measure.

How is it for activities like Star Gazing?

You can gaze the stars during the summer nights, there are campings on Peddock's Island. That's also a good place to observe birds, deers, and turkeys. The Boston Harbor Islands have a rich biodiversity.
