Absolutely incredible! What a sight to see and a true honour. Will definitely recommend it to others along side the USS Constitution

If this review is helpful, please give me a "thumbs up" or "helpful" vote.

1. Bottom Line Up Front/frame of reference for my remarks. I am a retired Marine Corps Infantry Officer, history buff and a tour guide aboard another museum ship. As such, I have high expectations of museum ships (I have visited over 15 in the United States).

2. Staff. The ship is manned by U.S. Park Service Rangers. Bear in mind that the ship is not open year-round and the Park Rangers may have only been here for a few months and may not have the knowledge base as volunteers aboard other museums that are open year-round.

3. Namesake. The ship is named on behalf of U.S. Navy Captain Cassin Young, a native of Washington D.C. and a 1916 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroic actions during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the Navy Cross (posthumously) for heroic actions during the battle of Guadalcanal.

4. Details of my visit

4.a. Date & Time. Saturday 28 September 2024 (afternoon).

4.b. Other patrons. During my visit, there were approximately 50 other patrons (mostly adults).

4.c. Length of visit. The guided tour lasted 1 hr & 45 minutes. An unguided tour could be accomplished in approximately 30 minutes (since it is limited to the main deck only).

5. Location/accuracy. I plugged the address (listed on the website) in to my iPhone and it took me directly there.

6. Access

6.a. Passenger vehicles. There is no parking lot. Metered (paid) parking is available on the streets nearby.

6.b. Buses and RVs. This site is not easily accessible by large vehicles.

7. Admission. No charge.

8. Hours of operation. Check the ship’s website for current information.

9. Type/nature of visit.

9.a. Un-guided tours. Visitors may conduct un-guided tours of the main deck only.

9.b. Guided tours. Guided tours (no charge) are available periodically throughout the day. See paragraph 14 for details.

10. Handicap access. The ship’s main deck is somewhat accessible via a ramp. The above and below decks of the ship are accessible only by climbing up and down quite a few steep/narrow ladderwells (staircases).

11. Child friendliness. The ship is safe for children but I would caution parents that if they intend on negotiating ladderwells (staircases) to the superstructure (above) or belowdecks, it is unsafe to carry children. A good rule of thumb on ships is to maintain three points of contact (both hands on the handrails and one foot on the steps at a time) when negotiating stairs.

12. Overall details / specifications

12.a. Crew. 325. Keep this in mind as you make your way through the cramped passageways and living spaces.

12.b. Class of ship. This ship is DE-793 (Fletcher class Destroyer); 175 Fletcher Class Destroyers were constructed during World War II.

12.c. Displacement (weight). Empty. 2,050 tons

12.d. Length. 376 feet.

12.e. Beam (width). 39.6 feet.

12.f. Draft (from the bottom of the ship to the waterline). 13.8 feet.

12.g. Propulsion. 4 x oil-fired boilers providing steam to 2 x steam turbines, turning two propellers.

12.h. Horsepower. 60,000.

12.i. Speed. 38 knots / 44 mph.

13. Armament. Armament varied somewhat from ship to ship.

13.a. 20mm Oerlikon Anti-aircraft cannons. There was only one of these guns present. These guns fire a 1/4 lb projectile (1/4 oz of explosive) 2,000 yards; it is equal to .78 caliber. These do not produce "flak"; that is, if they do not strike an enemy aircraft, they simply fall into the ocean.

13.b. 40mm Bofors Anti-aircraft cannons. Ships of this class routinely mounted either single or dual mount 40mm guns. These guns fire a 2 lb projectile (1/4 lb of explosive) 4,000 yards it is 1.6 inches in diameterr. These do not produce "flak"; that is, if they do not strike an enemy aircraft, they simply fall into the ocean.

13.c. Hedgehog anti-submarine mortar (forward). This ship has her original two Hedgehogs. These are forward-firing and are mounted on the front of the ship. Each one can fire 24 mortars
(each one 7 inches in diameter and weighing 65 pounds - with 35 pounds of explosive) approximately 200 yards in front of the ship. Unlike depth charges, they do not detonate unless they make contact with a submarine.

13.d. Depth Charge projectors (K-guns). These devices have all been removed. They could project 300 lb depth charges approximately 100 yards on either side of the ship.

13.e. Depth Charge racks. These devices are located at the stern and were used to simply roll 300 lb depth charges off the ship.

13.f. Torpedos. Quintuple 21" torpedo launcher. The U.S. Navy used various types of torpedoes throughout the war. Most were 16-24 feet in length, weighed 2,000-4000 lbs, carried a warhead of 500-1200 lbs and had a range of up to 8 miles.

13.g. Main Battery. 5 x 5" guns in single gun mounts. These guns could fire a 55 lb projectile 10 miles (or 37,00 ft in an anti-aircraft mode).

14. Guided tour allows access to:

14.a. Pilot House (Bridge). The location from where the Captain would command the ship.

14.b. Enlisted berthing and mess decks. Sleeping quarters and dining room.

14.c. Chief Petty Officer berthing and mess area. Sleeping quarters and dining room for senior Enlisted Sailors.

14.d. Officer Berthing and Wardroom. Sleeping quarters and dining room.

14.e. Plotting Room. Fire direction computers for the 5" guns.

14.f. Signal Bridge. Location primarily used for storing and hoisting signal flags.

14.g. Captain's Cabin Lliving quarters.

14.h. Some other compartments that I cannot recall.

1g. History

15.a. Construction Site. Los Angeles, California.

15.b. 31 December 1943. Commissioned; this is the day she became an active warship.

15.c. Combat Employment, World War II. True, Woleai, Satawan and Ponape (Caroline Islands); Saipan, Guam, Rota, Tinian (Mariana Islands); Peleliu (Palau Islands); Mindinao, Luzon (Philippine Islands); Formosa (Taiwan); Okinawa (Ryuku Islands); Leyte (Philippine Islands); Camranh Bay (Vietnam); Hong Kong; Canton (China); Ryuku Islands; Iwo Jima (Bonin Islands); Okinawa IRyuku Islands);

15.d. World War II Casualties. April - July 1945; 2 x kamikaze attacks. Battle of Okinawa. Killed. 3. Wounded. 73

15.e. 28 May 1946. De-commissioned (no longer in active service, but capable of being recalled to active duty).

15.f. 8 September 1951. Recommissioned. Served in the Pacific, Caribbean and Mediterranean.

15.g. 29 April 1960. Decommissioned.

15.h. 1 December 1974. Stricken. This is the day that the U.S. Navy declares that she will never be recommissioned. She is stricken from the Naval Vessel Register (allowing her name to be used by a newer ship). When a ship is stricken, it also indicates that the Navy intends to sell her for scrap.

15.i. 15 June 1978. Arrived Boston, Massachusetts.

15.j. 1981. Opened to the public.

15.k. 1986. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

16. Amenities

16.a. Restrooms. Not available; there are ports-johns available at the USS Constitution gift shop (approximately 300 yards away).

16.b. Water fountains. Not available.

16.c. Climate controlled. No.

16.d. Food & beverages. Not available.

16.e. Gift shop. The USS Constitution's gift shop is nearby but I did not see any Cassin Young items.

16.f. Note. There is no visitor center/museum ashore like many other museum ships.

17. Recommended clothing, equipment and supplies

17.a. Clothing. If conducting a guided tour, It is not a good idea to wear flip-flops due to the requirement to negotiate narrow/steep ladderwells.

17.b. Equipment. If conducting a guided tour, backpacks may be a hindrance when negotiating steep ladderwells inside the ship.

17.c. Supplies. Water is recommended during hot weather.

18. Lastly

18.a. If you are interested in other attractions of this type, please see my other reviews.

18.b. If you have the time, the American Heritage Museum in Hudson, Massachusetts has a large, beautiful collection of military vehicles employed in World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam and the Cold War.

19. Conclusion. Highly recommend taking the guided tour; it will make for a much more enjoyable/informative visit. She is worth a visit if you are in the area and is worth a special trip (I flew from North Carolina specifically to see this ship and the museum in Hudson listed above).

A visit to the USS Cassin Young, as well as the USS Constitution, in Charlestown is a must-do for anyone visiting Boston.

The USS Cassin Young and the USS Constitution are part of the Boston National Historical Park. Admission is free. Confirm that the ships are open on the day of your visit (not open 7 days a week).

How to Get There: start the adventure by taking a MBTA ferry that departs from Long Wharf that is in front of the Boston Marriott Long Wharf hotel. The Long Wharf is next to the Boston Aquarium and is where many tourists sign up for tour buses (e.g. Boston Duck, Hop On Hop Off) and harbor cruises.

The MBTA Boston Harbor City Cruise ferry costs only $3.70 one way (half price for seniors and free for children under 11). The ferry runs every 15 – 30 minutes depending on the time of day. Purchase tickets after you board the ferry – no need to buy tickets on the app in advance. The short ferry ride takes you to Charlestown – it is a short 10-15 minute walk to the naval yard.

The USS Cassin Young is a naval destroyer. Unless you are part of a tour, you will only be able to walk on the deck of the destroyer. We were lucky to do a free tour of the destroyer led by a National Park Service ranger. Reserve a space on the tour when you board as the tour is capped to 15-20 people. Reconsider taking the tour if you have young children or are unable to climb up and down steep narrow ladder steps.

The 45 minute tour took us inside the destroyer. It was fascinating to visit the quarters of the crew, the store, the computer room, the kitchen and dining/game area and even the tiny bathroom. We even saw how “easy” it was to manually move the large weapons on the deck. Our group asked a lot of questions which made the tour even more informative.

TRAVEL TIP: The MBTA ferries are a fun and inexpensive way to do a tour of the Boston harbor and day trips outside Boston.

We were only able to visit the upper deck (not the lower levels), which already provides some clues about life on board: kitchen, captain’s cabin, laundry, war room, infirmary, etc.
The whole is very well maintained, and free visit which is rare in Boston!

The USS Constitution is the star of the Charlestown Navy Yard, but the WWII destroyer Cassin Young is decorated in its own right and is worth visiting here if you have time. It’s not the best retired ship to visit. Many parts are not accessible and there are few explanatory signs. But you get a good understanding of what this ship did and how much different service on it was compared to larger warships. Free, quick to visit and just steps from the Constitution, so why not?

Excellent exploration of a warship that fought in late WWII, especially the Battle of Okinawa. She's one of only 4 surviving Fletcher class destroyers still around. She's amazing to experience and take in her history.

We visited this ship after the US Constitution. It was even more interesting than the other ship and gave a good view on how life on board was.
They organized a small guided freetour, just when we were there, so we participated. The guide was maybe a bit to full about military history, but the explanation was good and the tour was free, so we did not care.

Seems to be an afterthought in the Constitution and museum complex. Descriptive signs onboard are minimal and many areas of the ship are off limits. Very little help from docents/personnel onboard. Maybe 30 minutes if you dawdle. Spend the time viewing the historic Constitution and museum, then this only if you have extra time.

Nice to visit a WWII ship with a lot of history. It’s free to visit, could only visit the main deck at the time we went. Definitely worth a visit.

Found this ship by chance after visiting USS Constitution. Served in WW2 and hit by Kamikazes…fascinating to walk around the deck and peek inside. Only shame that you can’t go below. Worth a visit in its own right.
