Amazing stop with a fantastic staff. Niko made our visit, he was friendly and funny. Love the drive to the top and the little museum before we headed up, It was windy but well worth the hike to the center and the hike around the rim. What a view and we even saw some deer.

We had to wait for the snow to melt off the road to the summit. The Visitor Center was very accommodating for our wait. The dusting of snow made for lovely conditions when we did summit. The winds up to were ferocious, so we did not walk the loop trail around the cone.

Visitor center was excellent. Displays were informative and staff answered all questions. Drive to upper parking area very nice. Views from area were spectacular.
We did not hike to the rim because it was very windy and pretty cold. But, parts of trail we could see from upper parking lot looked well maintained.

Never, ever, ever did we ever expect that this site....this old extinct volcano, had a road you could drive (2 miles) to get to the top, park and look around. One of our favorite spots to visit during this bucket list trip. Views were outstanding. Park staff incredibly helpful. You could even hike the rim of this old volcano. Doing some road work right now, ?cause of?, so there is a stop light to control traffic flow for about 500 ft or so. No issues, but what a view!

This park was the highlight of our family vacation to Northern NM this past summer. We arrived around 8:30am at the visitor center and immediately drove up to the parking lot up on the rim. We hiked the Crater Rim and Vent trails (1.5 mi. RT) around the rim and into the center of the volcano and our 3 yo had a blast. The sweeping views are incredible everywhere you look on top of the rim.

We returned to the visitor center around 10:30am, and my wife and daughter relaxed at the visitor center while I hiked the other two lower elevation trails in the park. The Lava Flow Trail (1 mi. RT) was ok, but I didn't think it was anything special. The Boca Trail (2 mi. RT) was spectacular, especially near the Quaking Aspen Overlook. There was so much to see on this trail and I couldn't believe mid-day on a summer Saturday I didn't see another person on the trail. Definitely an overlooked hike as most people just hike the Rim Trail and move on.

Later in the evening, we returned to the park for a Dark Sky Program where astronomers allowed us to view galaxies, stars and nebulas through their telescopes. It was magical and we can't believe how amazing the night skies were on that clear sky night! It's a moment our family will cherish forever.

Visited on a Sunday afternoon in July and was pleasantly surprised to have no wait to drive to the rim. Stopped at visitors center to show pass and the young lady hardly acknowledged I was present due to the other cars circling out front and her worrying they would not stop to pay. I wonder why they don't just put in a toll booth? Nevertheless, the drive was very nice and the overlook is well worth the stop. Would most definitely recommend the short drive off the main highway to see.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the volcano. The gift shop was nice, had informative displays and a short interesting video. The park rangers were all very helpful. The drive up to the viewing area provided incredible views. We took the 1-mile rim trail. It took us about an hour because we stopped to take pictures and catch our breath. We only gained 305 feet but since we started at 7,877’ in elevation and are used to sea level in FL, it took our breath away along with the views.

Please keep in mind… this is in the middle of nowhere. Entry fee is $20 and you are able to drive all the way to the top, so no hiking is required unless you want to walk to the middle of the volcano or up around the edges. We walked the path to the middle of the volcano. Not a very strenuous hike. It’s paved but you are going down hill on the way to and uphill on the way back. In my group it was 2 adults in our 20s and a small child and we did it with no problems. But if you don’t want to hike your able to look down at the middle and the views from where you drive up are very pretty. The people that work there were super friendly and you could tell they enjoyed their job. Please note, it is CARD ONLY but they do accept national park passes if you have one. In the gift shop, I would recommend watching part of the video on the volcano. It was pretty interesting as it explains how the volcano once erupted. Great attraction to help break up the trip and learn about the area.

I routed my wife and grandson to this park in 2016 (it was only $7 for a pass then). As a geologist, I've wanted to see it for myself. Finally, on an indirect trip home I had a chance to stop on a Monday morning. There are a whole chain of volcanoes in this corner of NM, but the NPS chose to protect Capulin Volcano as a great example of them. As mentioned in other reviews, the park service charges $20 for admission now. Get yourself an annual pass, or even better a lifetime Senior or Military pass if you're eligible!

The Visitor Center and gift shop were great as usual, and the staff helpful. I was shocked at how busy this little park was. It's kind of in the middle of nowhere, and I honestly didn't expect that many tourists to be interested. The ranger actually said it was normally even busier!

The drive to the parking lot up top was a little tricky. They had some damage to the road and a short section is only one lane, but they're in the process of finishing the repairs. The parking lot isn't huge, at times they had a ranger keeping track of spaces available so they didn't end up with a big mess up top.

I did the Rim Trail and the Vent Trail. They're both paved, but a little uneven. The biggest thing is be prepared! I saw people in flip-flops, no hats, no water. The parking lot is at almost 7,900' elevation and the top of the Rim Trail is a bit higher. The views from the top were excellent, well worth the hike...just be safe about it.

I went back down the road and had a picnic lunch, did the Lava Flow Trail from the Visitor Center. All the hikes were well-marked and pleasant. Drove back up to the top before I left for a short time. Parking was getting very full and thunderstorms were building in the area. Time to call it a day and head for my overnight stop in Raton, NM.

One last suggestion. There are a lot more people traveling with pets in recent years. Please be aware of the restrictions, check park websites...

I never knew there was a volcano in New Mexico. Found it by accident doing my Google map planning. Visually stunning from below and on top and super easy access. You can drive to the rim of the crater. You can hike the perimeter of the crater as well as hike into the crater. Extinct volcano but tremendous views. We arrived just before some incoming thunderstorms with visible lightning so park rangers suggested (they said they couldn't order) us to not walk the rim and to plan to vacate the summit. However we stood with the ranger as she received reports from radar until the storm got to 16 miles, then we descended. Handicap parking and bathrooms available on the summit. Really nice tourist store with facilities and helpful staff. Nice free short movie about the mountain/volcano. Good for adults and kids.
