fter photographing and knowing of this museum for years I finally decided to go visit.

The museum, located in the Lower East Side, is 1/2 block from the Delancey FMJZ station...so getting there is easy.

Tickets range from $12 - $18 (Student/Senior/Adult) but there are additional discounts for other groups. The museum is open later in Thursday evenings (through 9pm) and offers donation-only admissions after 6pm that day.

The first floor is the book/museum store, and cafe and admission counters. The second and third floors contain the galleries. Restrooms are on the second and third floors as well.

The galleries were interesting...but I found that you have to have an interest (or at least be open to an interest) in photography as an art. There are many photos and corresponding descriptions throughout the space. Most of the galleries take you into the lives of the subject and their thoughts at that time...also allowing you to interpret what you see and read. Very interesting...but I'm not sure if it would keep the interest of the typical "museum-goer" as opposed to someone with a more artistic appreciation of photography. (i.e. I don't see many children being interested in the galleries...also, the photos do contain a fair amount of nudity)

While reading almost all of the descriptions, the museum took me about an hour and a half to complete.

They do offer full-time, part-time and workshop programs for those interesting in their educational offerings.

Two floors sharing a common theme of photography, currently an exploration of angst-filled relationships. I thought that the curation was well executed but IMHO expensive for what it is.

Warning: this is sadly not a place to bring young people who are interested in photography as the subject matter should be rated 'X' or at least 'R'. Additionally, those who have suffered abuse in their lives may find some of the exhibitions triggering. In a time when there is increased sensitivity to those who have suffered abuse, the museum falls woefully short in giving notice to attendees about the possibility of being triggered by the subject matter on display. The museum could be renamed the International Center of Pornography.

I understand there is value in exploring the darker destructive aspects of life through art. I'd only ask that there be a consciousness around the unintended effects on viewers who are not prepared for what they are going to encounter. Perhaps inviting people who have had trauma or experiences positive or negative which mirror the content of a proposed exhibit to share their thoughts and feelings would add a dimension to the curation and selection process.

I think this had to be one of the most disappointing places we visited during our 12 days in New York. I love good photography and I've been to several exhibitions but this is just "nothing" and I left feeling very unfulfilled.

The exhibition itself was interesting and well-made, not a sensory overload but just enough to be busy for 1-2 hours, taking it all in and reading the descriptions and back stories. The café also was very pleasant, the baristas were friendly and we were able to just sit there, drink coffee, and look at some photography books that were displayed there.

Our first impression was of a very helpful staff and the nice quiet space that lends itself to the museum. The exhibits were interesting but not at the level we thought we would see given the international status of the museum.

Another reviewer said that this was a collection of about 80 pictures and they were right. So much potential in this space and just an absolute waste of time to visit. There are thousands of talented visual artist working in this medium and with so much to choose from I can't understand why the two exhibits they offered were so incredibly bland.

I expected to stay a couple of hours and I was out in 25 minutes. 10 of those minutes were spent wandering around and thinking I missed an exhibit wing. I did not. Much like the guy wrote above, the best thing was the visit to the Essex Market across the street.

Hate to say it, since I had previously seen exhibits at the uptown space in the past, but this was really quite uninspiring.
The depth of photography shown is limited, space vastly underutilized, and it was a real disappointment.
Thought we might have to cut the visit short to stay for only an hour before we got there, entire walk-through required just 15 minutes.
Highlight of the museum visit was the walk through the Essex Market across the street before we went in.

This interesting contemporary photography collection (in the new building) showcases slices of American life. The "But Still, It Turns" current collection from several recent photographers shows images from the current American landscape. One of these showed "What Remains" when a single image is shown next to the video made at the same time as the lone photograph. This is an interesting perspective if you've ever wondered what the subject was doing immediately before & after the picture was taken.

Also interesting was a periodic showing of a recent slice-of-life film made to show what activity in a typical Southern small city looked like. One of the main characters is inspired by basketball; this file will remind you in places of 1995's "Hoop Dreams."

Note this Museum is now in its new location a few blocks further downtown from the old location. Many tourist web sites (including TripAdvisor!) still show the Museum at its old Bowery Street location; be sure to travel instead to Essex Street.

It opened 1/25 and we did not want to compete with crowds so waited til 1/26. The building is beautiful, light-filled and perfect for both display and events. Galleries on floors 2 and 3 display several exhibitions. Varied and excellent. I loved the Lower East Side street scenes on 3. Tyler Mitchell’s work on 2 was my other favorite. This museum is right across Essex St from both Essex Market and the Market Line beneath it, each of which is a great stop for lunch. So much to see and to do on the Lower East Side.
