Lyonel did a wonderful job with this tour! He was very knowledgeable and came prepared with pictures to make the experience even better. We went to 3 places and that was plenty because you spend about an hour at each one and the drinks were pretty strong (for me, anyway). As another review says, the other people in the tour make it even more special. It was a relatively small group, but each person was from a different place. I loved the diversity! Everyone was so friendly.

In an industry filled with clowns, Alex’s Tours manages to be the biggest joke of all. I took the East Village Speakeasy tour before going on to work with the company and it’s the stupidest decision I’ve made in my seven years of tour guiding. In a best case scenario, you’ll get the founder who will mumble his way through remembering what he saw in the Ken Burns prohibition documentary. In a worst case scenario, you’ll get someone who hasn’t been shadowed and was given a jumbled script with no structure that includes a sizable chunk just describing what mash distilleries are. Riveting stuff from a man who refuses to pay his employees. On top of that, guides will sometimes get next to no notice that two of the stops are closed and you have to learn two new bars on the spot. If you’re a tour guide, avoid this company like the plague. There are better paying companies that aren’t going to waste your weekends for $100. If you’re a guest, you can just google these places (Please Don’t Tell, Barbershop, and The Back Room) and go yourself instead of enabling a pathological liar.

I'm sorry we had to let you go but we were receiving only negative reviews and complaints about your services. Your resume indicates less than 2 years experience in NYC as a tour guide. I'm sorry you didn't meet our standards.

I highly recommend this activity! Alex was very knowledgable and the speakeasies he took us too were wonderful and had amazing drinks. It was my friend and I's last night in New York and it was a great way to cap off our visit. If you're looking for something different to do and to see some hidden gems, check out this tour!

Intriguing tour through the backside of prohibiton. Lyonel opened those doors you wouldn't find on your own to augment the great scenery and flair of the speakeasys with stories and insights about the 1920 era. Much enjoyed the tour, the drinks and the company.

This tour was a lot of fun and a really different experience in NYC. I loved exploring the LES and checking out all the secret locations that I never would have been able to find on my own. I would definitely recommend this for a fun and different night out. Our tour guide Lyonel was a lot of fun and very knowledgeable. Definitely a must do in the city!

Guide was fun, knowledgeable, and efficient! Only consideration for maybe future choices was last bar was wildly hot and I couldn't hang out there too long

We will be booking one of these tours in mid-December. I’ve been researching which area but I CAN’T decide and there’s not really any reviews that tells me which is best; LOTS of great reviews. Can someone please let me know which area is best? We’re going for my birthday so I want it to be a great experience for my husband and I 💙

We did the lower east side which we really enjoyed, I can’t speak for the other sides of the city, however I think the lower east side offers a bit more history. Enjoy!

If you could only do one speakeasy tour, the most historic, the most 20's inspired which one would you do?
I want to do all four but only have time for one.
Also can you drink in each of the establishments?

I'm not certain which tour we ended up choosing but it was in the Bleeker St, Hudson St, 9th Ave, etc area. The support team at Alex's Tours is super helpful & responds pretty quickly if you have any questions.
As for drinking, they permit you to have beverages at 3 of the stops so as to keep everyone standing upright. My husband even found a new favorite drink thanks to Alex's suggestion.
My husband and I truely enjoyed the tour and intend to return for another one when our son, a history major, turns 21 in April.
You won't be disappointed with any of Alex's Tour routes!

just wondering how strict the policy is on running shoes? one of my group needs to wear them cause she has bad feet, she was going to wear her fall boots but now its going to be too hot out for that to be an option. thanks

Depends on the tour. The SoHo tour, for example, includes a few bars that have dress codes.

We are visiting this weekend and staying near Penn Station - not sure which tour to take ... i.e. west, east, lower etc .. any tips or ideas which would be best as far as Meet Up Point in relation to hotel?

You can see the meet up point on our website alexstourscom the best tour from Penn Station would be the West Village Speakeasy tour. Make sure to check for availability first especially on Saturdays.

We did the tour on the lower east side of the city so that we would be within walking distance to Little Italy for dinner. The tour you think you might like to take could be dependent upon the day of the week and the time. It seems that there are only a handful of tour guides (all of whom have a background in history). I can't say I was that thrilled with the tour in general. Also, in each 'location' where a speakeasy 'might have possibly been at such location' plan on spending with tip, $20.00 US dollars per drink). Also, you would be meeting the guide literally on the street. Our guide was holding a sign which must have been about 5 X 8 inches. It is almost like connecting with a complete stranger in the middle of a NYC block in the dark. I believe we went to 5 locations all pretty close to each other, but only one location was confirmed to have been a speakeasy. Hope this helps.
