Went with a friend, was paired with another group which was totally fine.
Very small and hard to locate.
This escape room was terrible. The clues that were given was horrible as well as the way in which they were given.
The room had hardly anything to do with the theme of the room.
Not thrilling and fun at all.
I highly recommend HOODWINKED ESCAPE located at upper manhattan if you, family and friends are seeking for a 5 star REAL LIFE escape the room adventure.

This is a good place to start off on Escape rooms. We did the zombie themed puzzle with a group of 8 (which is the maximum size). We finally got out with 5 minutes to spare.
Having done 3 Escape Room games before (all with Escape The Room NYC). Overall most of the puzzles were rather linear and pretty obvious, once you have gathered up all the immediately accessible clues. A couple of steps felt to us to be impossible to solve without the onscreen hints (you get upto 3 on demand).
The staff were not as engaging as in Escape The Room NYC. We were essentially ushered into the room and locked with hardly any introduction. Still, from the nature of the hints we received on screen, it appeared they were closely following our progress and the hints were very relevant (although blatantly clear).
I am giving it 3 stars for the quality of puzzles (low difficulty level and not enough variety) and the 4th for the groupon deal ($17 per head which is easily the cheapest its possible to get in this genre).

I was a bit sceptical when I read the other review for this place but they seem to have changed things up since. I did the zombie room in a group of 5, they didn't tack on others, which was good because I find 3 to 6 people is a good number for these. I've done a number of other escape rooms and I'd place this one as somewhere a bit above average. Some of the puzzles and lock mechanisms were unique which was nice but it only had one room split into two segments. Service wise they were excellent,we left with plenty of time to spare but got delayed by a signal problem on the subway, we called ahead to let them know and they were very accommodating. I wouldn't mind coming back and trying out the other room

Positive side
Easy location to get to. Not very expensive. My brother and friend were the ones to figure out the last 2 clues that "saved" us, so we won and had our pictures taken.
The let down:
Having played a few other escape rooms across the globe, I was excited about trying this escape room. I figured NYC would have top quality games. I was disappointed.
I arranged to go with my brother and three other friends. When we got to location we were greeted by two young Koreans. Koreans do excellent horror flicks, so this made the butterflies kick in. They seated us in the waiting area where a group of girls were already hanging out, and a few minutes later a young couple walked in. They were obviously on a date and joined us in the waiting room for a total of 10 people.
The host said, "everyone is here, we can begin" in his heavily accented and very unenthusiastic English. Clearly bored, he explained the directions, (there is a zombie party tonight and they have our three friends locked in a cell, we have to free the friends and free ourselves so we don't get eaten, there is a TV monitor with more directions and clues if we need them) locked three people from the combined group in a cell, and left.
I was looking forward to playing a fun escape game with my family and friends, I was not in the mood to deal with these strangers (as good spirited as they were).
I was confused by the clues which had nothing to do with the situation or each other (I won't go into detail in case you do decide to play).
Conclusion:
If you're visiting NYC and want to meet some new people, this might be a good activity. You are forced into a room with complete strangers and it's a great way to find travel pals or meet natives who can hook you up with cool spots to see while you're visiting.
Personally, I just wanted to do something fun with my family and friends, sharing the experience with others was sort of a bummer.
