We hiked Aztec Trail, it was perfect for our family with 2 young ones ages 6 and 7. The terrain was rocky with just enough climbing for the kids to feel accomplished. The scenery was the most beautiful of our trip! Many great photo opportunities. Great view from the top!

Loved this state park! The visitor center seemed brand new and was beautiful. Many camping and picnic spots but it seemed like trailhead parking was way too small. A bit if recent flash flood damage so, as always, be careful.

There's lots of ground to cover here. Beware, these are bone dry mountains, and completely barren which means no shade. Bring more water than you thing you'll need and, if hiking, turn around before you think you actually need to.

This park and small mountain range is a great place to get out and explore the desert mountains! Right around the corner from downtown El Paso, Franklin has countless trails for beginners up to experienced hikers offering caves, mines and unbelievable city and mountain views ⛰..! Aztec Caves, 1000 steps and Ron Coleman trails are all great ones! I highly recommend this hiking area for those who want to get out and explore!!

Very quiet, beautiful and peaceful place. Mundy's Gap Trail! Wow! Rocky as hell to start out. A great challenge. Then on up towards top, trail gets less rocky and easier. The views are definitely worth it. You'll be glad you did it afterwards. And you'll be ready for a cold beer or margarita afterwards which are plentiful in El Paso. Strongly recommend if you're up to a challenge. Look forward to returning and going on up to the peak.

As Dennis R mentioned in his review from November this trail is rated as moderate level and good for kids. After reading reviews my friend and I felt confident we could handle it. I'm an active senior with regular walking, hiking, cycling and horseback riding. My friend 30's, is also active and fit. On the flat areas it's easy to walk on the large loose rocks. As the incline increases it becomes difficult to get a foothold as even large rocks are loose. I fell down twice on the descent and my friend once. There is rebar projecting out of some of the wooden plank reinforcements. The wooden bridge was shaky and questionable. Agree that children under 10 would need assistance unless quite agile and athletic. It's a beautiful park and the caves are fun to explore with a great view looking outward so I'm rating 4 stars. Be aware of potential for falls and use caution if you break easily!

The park is a gem. Wonderful views of the Upper valley and beyond, and accessible hikes. People bring their dogs and for picnic. The park is kept very clean, and the visitor center is staffed by helpful park rangers and has nice souvenirs. The one downside is the way into the park (Tom Mays entrance, it seems to be called). If you drive from the west (eastbound on 375) it is very easy to miss the left turn towards the entrance. With cars going 60 or 65 mph behind you it is hard to identify the turn. It is much easier to enter from the Westbound lanes. Better signage would help.

I don't know if if was us or our sat nav but we were led up blind alleys a couple of times and eventually gave up trying. I researched and downloaded all the available directional material but we stil could not find the right access road. Sorry to have missed it but perhaps some better signage would have helped

Since Covid there has been zero maintenance on this trail. While it is listed on various sites as easy to moderate it is NOT. The total lack of maintenance has led the last quarter of the trail to be very difficult and certainly NOT for small children. There are many of the steps missing completely requiring you to bushwack and hand over hand climb rocks. The surface leading up to the caves is very broken and slick due to loose gravel and sand. Difficult in the last several hundred feet going up and extremely difficult coming down. The elderly, small children and small pets CANNOT climb this and must be carried, which makes it even more dangerous. In my opinion only very experienced hikers/climbers should attempt this. It should probably be closed until repairs can be made. It's only a matter of time until someone gets seriously injured or killed.

We love the Texas State Parks. They feel like national parks. Franklin Mountains offers a variety of trails from short and easy to long and difficult. Most of the trails are loose gravel. Our favorite hike was the Aztec Caves. Although marked as 1.3 moderate, it is more like 2 miles and strenuous in areas. The last quarter mile is steep and basically a rock scramble. The effort, though, is worth it with beautiful views.

Looking for closest place to stay near the park and pet friendly. Prefer to be in a cabin rental directly in the parks, but TX State park cabins are not pet friendly.
Suggestions?

On the Ron Coleman trail, is the McKelligan Canyon trail head less steep than the Trans Mountain trail head?

Greetings all
Do I need a I-94 to go hiking to Tom Mays State Park?
Robert B
105 bidrag
If you need an I-94 it would be at a checkpoint either at the bridge or one at 65 miles outside El Paso. I believe the park only asks for money $5 as they are not required to check for visas. They may ask if you have a park pass. Unless you go to National parks alot you probably don’t have one. You’ll see a sign with prices at the park entrance. If no one is at the gate house then you are trusted to voluntarily pay in an envelope. Make sure you take the correct amount no change given, and a pen for your name and vehicle plates. They will check to see if you paid. Don’t take a chance paying a penalty.

Where can you get a nice view of the poppies in the franklin mountains? Thanks!

Sorry, I just saw this question! The best views of the poppies (although probably not in season now) would be on the northeast side of the mountain right off Transmountain Rd where it meets US 54 in the northeast side of town.

Thanks to everyone that answered my three questions! New question, would it be feasible to damn up a canyon in the Franklin mt. To create a pond or lake? Using mostly runoff from the summer monsoon rains and maybe even any existing natural springs.I think the residents and tourist would really enjoy it.The natural beauty is fantastic and add a small lake!

No answer on other box.anyway...three questions: any natural spring, creeks or ponds in the franklins? Any evergreen trees at higher levels? Last does it rain more on the franklins then the city below(el paso) and if so how much?

A few intermittent springs are located in the Franklin Mtns, however, one can never know if the water is actually flowing...better to not rely on them.
No evergreens at higher elevations, only gambel oaks and a few other hardy, stunted trees in the canyons.
It does rain more in the Franklin Mtns..I would estimate an inch or two above the yearly average of 8 inches.
