To start, Ft Bowie is NOW WHEELCHAIR / HANDYCAP ACCESSIBLE. What a plus. Drive past the main gate till you come to a bar gate across the road. There is a phone number to call and they will come down and open it for you to drive the short road to the visitors center. The bar gate is necessary because the park is not manned at night.
The Fort is the ruins of what was once a vibrant fort and settlement. Stand on the porch of the Visitors Center with the NPS guide and you can easily pick out where all the buildings were. Go in the Visitors Center, you can easily spend an hour or more taking in all the memorable and stories that go with them. Get the Park Staff to tell you the story about how the "war" really started over a child.
If you are up to it, start at the park main gate, and HIKE IN... Be sure to have water with you and sun screen. ... Do not try without water.... This is the best way to know the history ... you will pass by the ruins of the Butterfield Stage Station, Apache Springs (the reason for the Fort) , the Fort Cemetery (be sure to look for the grave of a Medal of Honor winner, site of the original Ft. Bowie and more.
NOTE: You are at an elevation of 5,000 feet. Water is only available at the Visitors center.. The trail is of moderate difficulty... Watch for rattlesnakes.. Do not attempt by yourself.. Be aware of your surroundings, you are close to the Mexican border... Rains can quickly fill washes.
Please, don't let the drive in keep you from visiting.. 12 miles of graded road (gravel) . It is well worth every bit of inconvenience. As an aside, when the Fort was abandoned by the Army, they say the town of Bowie contain windows and doors from the Fort.

This site is definitely worth walking in for if you are interested in history and understand that ruins mean just that. You won't find the buildings standing beyond low walls, but what you will get is a great walk along the Butterfield stage route and the Apache Pass trail. You can imagine the Apache peering down on the calvary and travelers, and those same travelers and military staring up at the mountain tops wondering what might happen. After a mile and a half walk in, you will come to the site where there is a nice visitor's center and another trail to follow around the ruins. Check the hours before you go if you want to enter the visitor's center. If you stamp the National Park Passport book, the stamp is outside in a metal case. On your way hiking to the site, you will pass the original site of Fort Bowie, the foundation of a house, and the cemetery, which is a must. To get here, you have a couple of choices. If you are in Willcox, you can drive over to Bowie, then drive down a paved road until the last mile when a decent gravel road takes you to the parking lot where you will start your hike. This is the longer way by miles, but about the same time as driving south from Willcox until you reach a sign that tells you Fort Bowie is down a dirt road. You will drive for eight miles and reach the same parking lot as the other drive. Whatever way you choose to go, this is site is worth the effort. The park ranger and volunteers are friendly and offer tips to make your site visit a good one. In many cases, photographs showing what the fort looked like are posted in front of the ruins.

Bordered by the Chiricahua and Dos Cabezas Mountains this isolated outpost was a beehive of activity in the mid 1800s. What’s left now? Are remnants of the building with a trail into the site and visitor center center. The longer trail is one and a half miles or you can drive up two more miles and access the visitor center without walking too far. The site is clean and informative. It’s 7 miles of dirt road which was in good condition and manageable in my sedan. Give yourself about 3 hours to cover all the remnants and enjoy the hike.

Unfortunately, the day we visited Fort Bowie, the visitor center was closed and did not see any park staff around. Road reaching this NHS is gravel for miles. We didn't have a problem with getting a parking spot. I'm sure it would have been more wonderful if our plans had allowed us to visit when the VC was open....would have been more meaningful.

Fort Bowie is really hard to get to. It’s nearly 100 miles from Tucson and 25 from the nearest town. The last 8 miles are on a rock-strewn dirt road. I was glad I had a rental car to take the abuse, but was worried I’d pop a tire and be stranded for hours. When you finally get to the site, it’s actually a trailhead for a 1.5 mile hike to the ruins of the fort and visitor’s center. When you finally get there, all that’s left are true ruins, most of them knee high and barely more than outlines of buildings. The site has a lot of interesting history as a key transportation avenue before the railroads and was at the center of a long war with the Apaches. Signs at the ruins and along the trail provide this background. It’s just not enough to justify the effort and, honestly, risk of a car breakdown. It’s somewhat “on the way” to amazing Chiricahua NM (the 8 mile dirt road takes 20 minutes each way to drive), but visit the latter first and visit Ft Bowie on the way back if you have time - and a suitable car.

Be prepared for the worst roads of your life. They are nothing but washboard the entire way. There needs to be more signs upon arrival. We had to wander around up a steep trail to find the visitors center. Cool place even though we were not prepared for the conditions.

My son & I took the mile and half trail to the fort, the scenery to fort was amazing, trail also took you to old military cemetery, where Geronimo son was buried. The was not much to the fort but still pretty cool.

The main reason I went was since I was in the area (Chiricahua National Monument) and I want to get as many national passport stamps as I can, haha. I was a little apprehensive about the hike to the visitor center, especially since I had already hiked that day at Chiricahua, but I made it. I definitely think the hike is longer than they say, especially if you take some of the short side trails to see some of the historical sites and plaques. I hiked solo, and I didn't see anyone else on the trail, other than a group of workers attending to some of the ruins. I returned on the ridge trail (behind the visitor center) which was steeper but had great views and several cacti. The hike was beautiful and I was glad I did it, even though my feet were killing me at the end of the day from hiking two parks. I like history though this type of history isn't my favorite but the info was still interesting. The park is definitely out there - at least 8 miles on an unpaved road to the parking lot.

I went with my husband. He likes history, he likes forts and he especially likes Ghost towns. This to me would be a ghost town of sorts. The area is manned by the Park Service. The museum is kinda interesting. The signage and pictures on the signs help you understand what went on. Overall, for me, it was ok. For him he liked it. I would give it a 3 he would give it a 4. The hills surrounding the fort are kind of cool. there is some sort of monument or religious structure a couple of miles north of the fort that were interesting. I have no idea who they belonged to.

A mile and a half to get to the ruins. The hike is better than the ruins, there's not much left of the fort but the fort's story is very interesting. A pretty difficult place to get to especially if coming from south.

My wife doesn't walk well. How close can we get with Tahoe 4 wheel drive? Thanks

call the headquarters and they can make accommodations for you to drive to ruin area.

Are there rattle snakes in the area and when do they come out of hibernation in the spring? Would we be better off to come sometime in February, not only because of the snakes, but also cooler weather? Thank you.
Skrevet 12. januar 2017
There would be snakes. They are 4 times more active in the monsoon season July-August. The trail iswell maintained and you will be able to see them.

I am planning a visit to both Chiricahua National Monument and Fort Bowie, I was wondering the condition of the Apache Pass Road to Fort Bowie coming in from the south, from Hwy 186 (as opposed to coming to Ft Bowie from the I-10). It appears to be unpaved, but is it driveable in a compact 2wd car? No high clearance, no 4wd here.

The road is not paved but in good condition. We traveled the road with our Toyota Camry and did not have any problems. It is a beautiful drive.
