Magnificent architecture, a visit that fills the eyes but unfortunately the visit is in VO untitled... no Audio Guide, not even a Guide allowing the youngest to understand the symbolism of all these rooms. A real undervalue to a visit that could have been gigantic.

The magnificent building of the Grand Lodge of Masons of Pennsylvania located on North Broad Street, opposite City Hall, is the principal Masonic center of this state. This Masonic Temple is a National Historic Landmark and one of Philadelphia's architectural treasures. Huge and decorated, it attracts visitors from all over the world.
The long Masonic tradition of Philadelphia sees its influence gradually spread throughout the United States. The construction of the temple took place between 1868-1873 and designed by one of Philadelphia's greatest architects of the time, James H. Windrim. The interior of the temple is the work of George Herzog, who among others created the Union League of Philadelphia, Philadelphia City Hall and Girard College.
Seen from the outside, the Masonic temple, with one tower larger than the other, is reminiscent of a Gothic cathedral. The dominant color is the gray of the stones used. It covers a full city block.
The building has three floors. The entrance is finely decorated with numerous engravings and already gives a taste of the refinement of the interior decorations.
The Great Temple is intended as a tribute to the architectural know-how of ancient cultures. Each room is decorated according to a particular architectural theme. The styles specific to ancient Egypt, the Renaissance, Greek Antiquity or Moorish culture among others, are faithfully reproduced through the furniture, ornaments, paintings and sculptures of several meeting rooms.

Philadelphia is where The American Republic/Democracy (if we can keep it) was born. It was an overwhelmingly inspired experience to visit the liberty bell and the historic buildings where the original 13 states met and determined the kind of government and the governance we would have a as a people. The cheesesteaks were icing on the cake. By the way they are delicious wherever you eat them because they all use the same bread from one single bakery.

Beautiful architecture and designs, still don’t understand what the masons do. A “social club” and the guide wouldn’t say, but some interesting things to see. A lot of society leaders are and were masons…seems to have some similarities with Mormon temples

Hard to compose this, although I've done so many reviews. IMO, the most memorable things are the most unexpected, and this falls into that category. Of course we go to Philly for,,,,you know. But this imposing place was intriguing and on a whim we took the tour, partly for the building and partly because none of us knew anything about Masons.
Well, home run on both counts. One of the most interesting hours I've spent in a long time. At least half the credit goes to our guide; I forgot his name but hope you get him. Unforgettable.

Philadelphia is full of impressive, encompassing historic buildings. The Masonic Temple is one remarkable example. Unfortunately it was not open during our visit.

Gostaria de saber se funciona alguma Loja Maçônica no Templo.

Would it be a difficult walking tour for my 80 year old mother? I've seen lots of beautiful staircases in their pictures; is there a lot of up and down or are there elevators available?
Skrevet 7. mai 2018
This guide will ask for any person with difficulties with stair. They have and elevator available for such cases. Even at the main entrance they have a wheel chair lift.

It is very difficult to find a free parking in this area. Paid parking garages are available throughout the center parts of Philadelphia though.
