There are two sections to this museum. The modern side and the classic side. The modern side is as expected. A lot of drawing, photography, experimentation. The classic side is also to be expected: classic artists, lots of brush strokes, a lot of white folk. But together, they both make a great experience. And the architecture of the older, “classic” side makes for an experience like out of “Alice in Wonder Land.”

Ticket fee is 15 dollars and worth it. You get a small modern art museum and a small classical art museum (with fantastic and Instagrammable architecture), but there is a great public space between the two, and a small cafe.

A great place to enjoy a morning or afternoon. And close to city hall, the Masonic temple, and many other attractions.

The museum is in two buildings. The larger space has works from fairly recent to hundreds of years old. The other space is connected to the school and (when I was there, at least) has mostly modern art by students... most of the second floor was closed to install a new exhibition, but fortunately the outstanding little sculpture gallery was open.

This is one of around 20 Philadelphia-area museums that give free admission to members of institutions that are part of NARM, the North American Reciprocal Museums. Buy a qualifying membership at your home museum, or a museum in some other city, that belongs to NARM... then you'll get free admission at around 1000 other institutions in North America. Bonus: Because you don't have to pay to get in, you can split your visit over more than one day without rushing to see it all at once. Check the NARM website (TA won't let me give its address) for a list.

Your ticket, $15 bought on line, provides you both to the Samuel M.V. Hamilton Building which I believer is the current art school and museum as well as the Historic Landmark Building (HLB) what you see in all the pictures. The Hamilton building exhibits more of the contemporary art. That is also where you go first to officially check in and buy tickets if you have not done so already. They will give you a sticker that will allow you entrance to the HLB building which is right next door.

Highlights: classic originals of George Washington that everyone has seen over the years. What an opportunity to see them in person. Check the website for current exhibits.

The Academy has a wonderful collection from the 1700s to present.
We really like the museums layout, especially in the original building. Great art displayed expertly - a great combination.
The Bill Viola exhibit packs a punch.
PAFA is a must see.

Famous for Eakins, this 19th century museum/school is just the right size for an afternoon's dose of painting and sculpture. Right down the street from City Hall, it's easy to get to. Offers top quality 19th and 20th century art in a prime example of Furness architecture. Look for the "crashed airplane" not too far away...

Visited with an art aficionado ( which I am not) and had a pleasant afternoon at his small museum and its annex just across the street.. The many works of Charles Willson Peale were amazing to see in person ( like the George Washington portrait on the dollar bill) The building itself (Frank Furness, 1870?) is on the National Register of Historic Places and had some amazing intricate tile work. The annex across the street had more topical and modern works.

My husband and I visited on a whim and were so glad we did! On the day we visited, we practically had the museum to ourselves. The collection is spectacular, as is the architecture of the building itself. Put it on your list!

A chorus of 100 singers and an orchestra of 95 musicians made for a powerful experience. The classic venue made it even better.

Small art museum with some nice pieces of artwork. The Thomas Eakins painting Gross Anatomy is here. It's hanging on the top floor of their historical building.
