We like the layout map to see where you are in scale. The place was desolate but a nice set of direction.

This doesn't look like a "park". It looks like an empty courtyard in front of buildings? It is quiet... no crowd. There is a bicycle rental station.

This small park is badly neglected. A few years ago a minor attempt too spruce it up a bit was made, buttons things have gone badly downhill. Persons at the adjacent hopkins house informed me that repeated requests to the national park service to refurbish the park have brought results. This sort of neglect does not speak well for Philadelphia. Also, nowhere in the park is the public informed that "Welcome" was actually the name of Penn's ship.

This roughly 1/2 sq block park is in a historic part of Phila near Penn's Landing on the Delaware River near where William Penn landed in 1681. Also near many attractions on waterfront or Independence Park, plus Society Hill etc. all within a few blocks in all directions. Despite its location, all of the buildings nearby are modern or reproductions.
The Park is across from the City Tavern, a 1976 recreation of the burned down Colonial Tavern serving good authentic historic foods by fine Austrian chef. The Park is basically all brick and marble w a few trees. The pattern of the ground is the Colonial center town street map crafted by Penn. Also signage about the life of Penn on fence. In the center is a small version of the 32 ft tall William Penn statue on the top of City Hall (a must see in Phila.). I would not go out of the way to see the Park but it can readily be incorporated into a fantastic walking tour. Lots of restaurants within blocks.

What an interesting way to introduce Philadelphia to visitors. Welcome park is located east of the main Historic District at South Second and Sansom. It was constructed in 1982 to celebrate the 300 year anniversary of the founding of Philadelphia by William Penn and was named after his ship, Welcome. He he set up Penn's Woods here and he lived on this spot from 1699-1701 at Slate Roof house. The park replicates in stone the original design of the city's original blueprint, which is fascinating. There are two statues of interest: one a miniature of the Slate Roof House and another, a miniature replica of the statue of William Penn which is atop City Hall. This park displays history in an most unique and original way. Worth a visit.

Welcome Park is located across from the historic Thomas Bond House at 2nd Street and Samson Street Alley giving you a great introduction to William Penn and the city of Philadelphia. The park features Penn's plan for the city with the street grid laid out in slate and marble. The park includes a wall that is a timeline of William Penn's life giving you a historical perspective. Penn once lived at this location and there is statue and location of where his Slate Roof House once stood.

In the densely built neighborhood near 2nd and Walnut Sts., the expansive Welcome Park wedged between a parking garage and a commercial building seems a bit out of place and decidedly cramped. I wanted to know why.

Welcome Park was built by the Friends of Independence National Historical Park in 1982 to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the founding of Pennsylvania by William Penn, and the inside perimeter of the park’s wall graphically outlines Penn’s amazing life and career. Why Welcome park? The park’s name derives from Welcome, the ship, on which William Penn and a group of Quakers from England sailed to the New World. His statue in the center of the square, high up on his pedestal, is a very small version of Penn’s statue on top of City Hall further north. Penn also lived here, and a marker denotes Slate Roof House, Penn's residence from 1600-1701. The house was demolished in 1867, and the site eventually was used for a commercial building. As you walk across this small concrete enclave you realize that it is crisscrossed by marble slabs that depict Walnut, Chestnut or Market Sts., the main arteries of Penn’s original Philadelphia grid.

Enjoy your walk through Penn’s Philadelphia history.

It was the site of William Penn's house and the government for Pennsylvania, now a park with a grid that is also a map of Center City. Interesting little stop.

This is a very small little area that's interesting because it is laid out like William Penn originally planned the city. There's a mural along the wall with some somewhat interesting history. Takes all of 10 minutes to see.

This park is tucked away and next to the Ritz movie theater. It's a nice, clean park with elements of history about William Penn. It certainly is a nice surprise to come across in a crowded city. Thanks Philadelphia for having some of the best small delights.
