A really well thought out museum, film, and battleground. The national park is beautiful. Use the NPS free app to listen to events at each stop on the battleground. At the museum they also have workers willing to help you trace family history and see if you have any men enlisted in the war. This is a free service.
The historic downtown is a great place to stay. We loved walking around every minute we could.

Two adults visited the Gettysburg Battlefield on a Wednesday afternoon in late December 2023 specifically to drive the free NPS auto tour. We had previously been to the NPS Visitor Center and Museum (not to be missed) but had not had time to drive the battlefield. Well, the free NPS auto tour is very well done and consists of a paper map from the Visitor Center and a download of the NPS app onto a smartphone and just following the audio guide through 14 of the 16 stops (two are under renovation). The entire tour takes a couple of hours but was excellently done. Note there are other commercial auto tours you can purchase that evidently include more detailed explanations but we were satisfied with the NPS one. The app also has an additional three tours available including walking Cemetery Ridge and the National Cemetery and a short auto tour of the East Calvary Battlefield. You really can't go wrong with this free tour but can also later opt for one of the paid ones.

To do the Battlefield properly you need to take at least 2 days. A half day to do the Visitor's center and a day and a half to visit the battlefield. You can obviously skip certain parts of the battlefield to shorten your visit. I noticed when I was there even though Little Round Top and much of the Peach Orchard was closed for reconstruction and road paving hardly anyone was on Culp's Hill.
Follow the auto tour or get a guide. Their are tons of monuments so you probably can't stop to see them all but stop and see the major ones and anyone's that may matter to you.

The best way to experience the battlefield was to do the National Park Service’s auto tour. It was free and it followed the map that they handed out at the visitor center. I believe there’s also an audio version of the tour as well for those that need to use audio. I followed the map by car, and got out of the car at the locations I could/or wanted to for photos or to walk.

To really experience the battlefield properly you show get a CD that guides you around. Plan for several days.
The monuments and statues are very impressive. The fact that some of them are in the woods and on hilltops makes you wonder how they wonder about how got them there.

If you live anywhere near Gettysburg, you must visit this place! There is something very special for our history and country at this site.

A mixture of beauty and sadness. Every American should spend time in the Battlefield. In today's world, I think Americans would best understand the horror of the results of a divided Nation and how we should love this country by coming together. Spending at least two days exploring, and then returning and exploring again is perfect. This was our third visit and it doesn't get old. We loved absorbing such an amazing place. Just remembering lives lost forever. We intend to return.

THE reason Lincoln came to Gettysburg, to pay homage to the brave men on both sides of this epic battle that could've won the war for the south instead of being the beginning of the end for them..

My son and I spent about 4 hours walking and driving the battlefield. We enjoyed finding the Ohio monuments and reading about all the men who fought in this battle.

We have been to Gettysburg many times. Done the bus tour, driven on our own and followed the map etc... My husband has always wanted to do a private tour of the battle field and I surprised him with one for our anniversary. If you really enjoy cival war history and have some understanding of the three day battle, I would encourage you to splurge and do a private tour. My husband had some questions and told our guide before we started what he wanted help in understanding. Our guide started in order, day one, had some photos and maps in a binder for additional reference. We went to specific vantage points and he showed us how huge the lines of soldiers were and it is rather overwhelming, puts things in perspective. With the COVID we had to caravan rather than ride together with the guide. I opted to do a 3 hour tour to compensate for the caravan driving, figuring we would loose some of the bits and pieces being pointed out if we were in a vehicle together. My husband was very happy, all of his questions were answered during the tour and it helped me have a better understanding of things as well. I am glad I splurged and did it for both of us. Our guide gave us his info to set up future tours or just check in with a general follow up question. He was super but some of the others that were nearby sounded good too. They love what they do and it shows. I would recommend getting in on a small group personal tour. It is worth it.
