Astoria served as our lunch break during an all day drive. Just after we crossed the iconic Astoria Megler bridge we parked for lunch. Luckily during it rain stopped so we took a walk by the river.
Astoria was the first settlement in Oregon set on a strategic location by the Columbia river. During our 20 min stroll we were greeted with great bridge and river views with passing ships.

Just a lovely stroll. We passed several restaurants and short piers that you can walk out and look at the water. Was certainly a bit breezy, so bring a jacket.
Enjoyed the signage along the path describing the history and geology of the area.

We stayed at the Bowline, right on the Boardwalk, for 2 nights and walked up and down the Boardwalk a few times those couple of days. The atmosphere is cool. We ate and did some shopping at a few of the places. It's as much of a "must do" as anything in town.

Great way to see the tip of the columbia river and the start of the pacific ocean. Plenty of parking space and ideal for all age group.

Astoria’s Riverwalk trail is a fantastic way to explore quite a bit of the city along the Columbia River. It runs for 5 miles along the river from end to end and the views are absolutely beautiful. There are also lots of interesting information signs along the way that tell all sorts of fun tidbits about the city.
The trail is almost entirely paved but some of it is wooden boardwalk towards the more industrial west end and is all very well maintained. It’s pretty much flat and definitely handicap accessible. The west end carries you through the cute downtown towards the lovely bridge - lots of hotels, shops, and restaurants. There’s also a two story viewing platform closer to the bridge which is awesome at sunset! Fabulous views all around - but especially of the famous bridge.
The east end carries you to a quieter area towards Pier 39 - one of my absolute FAVE places! Pier 39 has museums, restaurants, and the BEST coffee shop in the world (Coffee Girl). There are numerous other piers along the way as well - and usually have quite a large seal population during all seasons except summer.
In the summer, a cute trolley runs regularly during most of the day with lots of stops along the Riverwalk if your feet get tired. Very affordable. There are several parks along the trail too - some with lots of historical info such as the Nordic Heritage Park.
The trail is mostly safe enough. Towards the busier, more crowded west end by the bridge you’ll definitely encounter homeless people (very common across Oregon). They aren’t aggressive here like you find in LA or Portland. They keep to themselves. I was a woman traveling alone and I had zero issues. Just be aware and keep your wits about you.

Did a 5 mile walk along the river from our hotel. Great exercise, and we loved talking to everyone we passed on the way.

The river walk in Astoria is so much fun. I did not do the whole thing, but what was done was great. The part I went through goes by a lot of piers with great views of the Columbia. Lots of interpretive signs gives you a great perspective and history of Astoria. Not a lot of great photo opportunities for the bridge, but plenty for the river and the big ships. You can easily spend a good part of the day seeing everything including the Nordic Park. Whatever one decides, it will be a good time.

Really loved this walking path! A great way to view the river and the town. It certainly helped that I was there on a beautiful sunny day with the salty sea breeze welcoming me. Easy flat grade and goes past many places to stop. I’d love to bike it or take the trolley; maybe next time!

Beautiful place, but not safe. Homeless everywhere, did not feel safe in the middle of the day. Only stay here if you have too, very sad and nast place.

Nice paved path to walk along the river and into town. Stop and see the sea lions - you'll certainly hear them from a distance away. We were there in the early evening and it was very pleasant. Although our Airbnb host assured us it's safe, I don't believe there is any lighting along the path so I probably wouldn't roam around here after dark.

Hi, nanaandgpabusch. What would you like to know about this attraction? we will be in Astoria on Sep 25 and I see the riverfront Trolley will not be working, is this the means of transportation that you spoke about for $1.00? or is there a different bus

We are there on a cruise ship in early October 2017. Are there bikes for rent on the Astoria walkway or close by?

Are there any guided tours of the area. We have all day from 10 AM to 6 PM. We would like to see several of the sights in the area.

I'm not aware of any tour companies. Most of the "attractions" are scattered within a few miles and are pretty much walking tours. Try to go south to Ecola state park if you have time, great view of the ocean and "Terrible Tilly," a lighthouse on a rock island.
Stevens State Park, Fort Clatsop, Astoria Column, Columbia River Museum and Flavel Mansion are all good spots. And drive the bridge !
2Vegans2Wheels has a blog post about visiting Astoria too. Have fun.
