My husband and I visited while going to Cannon beach. We enjoyed all the history and the short film. We also did a home that was about 3 miles. We used our National Park Pass for our admission. If you like history, I would recommend!

This is a really cool and interesting park. I do not miss a chance to visit a NPS property, so being in Astoria a few days made this place a no-brainer.
We did the Historical Park Visitor Center and Fort Clatsop, we stopped at some affiliated locations, like Cape Disappointment, Fort Columbia, and Dismal Nitch. All of the locations were very interesting and I recommend them all.

I took a little solo trip to Astoria to visit this museum and collect a few cancellation stamps on my National Park Passport. It just so happened that I showed up at the exact day and time of an opening of an update to the museum. That worked out!
The inside part of the museum was smaller than I expected but very clean and accessible. There is a medium sized theatre that showed two films about the location. There was also a beautiful art piece depicting their journey in the very back. I wish there was more information about the Native Americans and (how they saved Lewis and Clark’s bacon) York, Clark’s enslaved person throughout the museum. However, I acknowledge that perhaps not a lot is known.
The real treat is the fort replica! Amongst the giant trees is a fort that’s been built based on the original fort. It was very interesting to see how they used the natural resources and space to their advantage. For example they built “loft beds” so that their travel and daily life items could be stored underneath. Beyond the fort are multiple water sites and trails that are so peaceful that it makes it easy to picture the history that took place there. There is hiking available if you are interested through stunning trees that are home to much wildlife. Or you can loop around back to the parking lot.
Tip: This location offers I believe it was 6 National Parks Passport stamps if you are a collector- enjoy!

We started our Scenic 101 bypass road trip, by visiting the Lewis & Clark National Park, in Astoria. This was one spot, I really wanted to see. It didn't let us down. The site is so peaceful, and beautiful. It's hard to imagine how the Lewis & Clark party, came to be in this area. The fort replica, workers, museum and movie, will definitely bring the history of this place, to life. We paid about $10.00 per adult, for admission, and only stayed about 1 hour & 15 minutes. If you have additional pages in your passport, you can have it stamped inside the gift shop, from the national park. We were a little rushed for time, but it was worth the visit, and glad we stopped by the park.

I was fascinated with Lewis and Clark and decided to stop by while passing Astoria. It was highly worthwhile since I learned and saw cool exhibitions and got to walk cool mini trails.

This is a series of smaller parks that revolve around the wintering stay of the 1807 expedition. The core is the reconstructed small fort. Very competent volunteers in historical costumes provide knowledgeable information about the expedition's stay.

Very good visit to the Fort and the Welcome Center. Spent about an hour in total as we where working our way down the 101 Beaches. There are some hiking trails I wish I had time to take the trail down to the Pacific. The forst is small but gives you a very good idea of the size and build from the time.

Such an interesting piece of the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery history. There is a replica of Fort Clatsop that depicts the hardship and rough condition the 33 people endured to map out the newly acquired territory in the Louisiana purchase. There is a nice visitor center, which is being rebuilt as of this posting, with two movies about the expedition and the interaction with the people and environment along the way. The little visitor center has maps and artifacts which give a better understanding of the route and challenges they overcame along the way. After visiting, I am left with a better appreciation of the places and the people who came before us. It has answered many things I’ve always wondered about like where did those names of these places come from and who was here and when. For any lover of history, it’s well worth the visit.

We had spent a day and a half driving north on part of the Oregon coast. This spot was our last top before turning inland and heading back to Portland. It is a short distance of Hwy 101 and fairly close to Astoria. I recalled this from the Ken Burns documentary on Lewis and Clark (recommended as background material). It was nice to see it IRL.
You arrive at a loop drive that also has parking spaces. In the middle of this is a grassy area for picnicking, etc. They may also do ranger talks there (?). At the far end of the loop is the visitors' center. The entry fee is $10 per person, unless you have a national park pass or some other discounts (they query you about the potential ones - age, student, etc.).
The center has a couple of films about the history of the site and the L&C expedition. We watched one. If you view both, it would take about an hour. There are also a lot of relevant exhibits showing things like motivations for the expedition (beaver pelts and their uses, etc.), native skills in boat-making, the expedition's route to get here, etc. The displays were done well.
Outside, there is a short trail to the reconstructed stockade site. You can walk through and see the living conditions for the 6 months or so that the expedition wintered here. They had a sort of living history guy giving a talk just outside, but we didn't stop there. You can also venture a short way further and see the spot where the expedition first came ashore from a tributary of the Columbia River. The total distance is only a a few hundred yards.
You can then optionally walk a trail along the river. I think it connects with an even larger trail system linking multiple L&C sites in the area. We opted to walk about a half mile out to a bridge and then return, just to stretch a bit before a 2-hour car ride to Portland.
If you have any interest in history, this is a very worthwhile site to visit.

How long should we expect to allocate timewise at this location? 2 hours or 4-5 hours?
Skrevet 23. februar 2019
by now you've seen the various answers and opinions and I concur with them. We take visitors there frequently and I find a couple of hours is sufficient if no children with you. See the film first and see what time the ranger is making his talks, as they are really informative. I've hiked the trail but unless you just want to travel their path to obtain water, not really worth the hike; and it's steep.

I would like to know how to get to the park from the cruise terminal also.
Skrevet 12. april 2016
I wish I could help but when I went I was on the American Empress Riverboat and took the tour through them - so we we were on a bus which took us here and several other spots. I would check around and see if you can find a "tour" company that offers tours - they would also provide the transportation. Otherwise rent a car?

How do we get to the park from the cruise terminal?
Skrevet 12. januar 2016
Yes, we had our dog along, but not inside the center.
Skrevet 16. september 2015
We didn't hire a guide; just took advantage of the opportunities provided by the Fort Clatsop Park staff who, in this case, was a college student. Perhaps the Park staff could be helpful??
