For my wife's birthday, I signed up for a penguin encounter at the zoo, which costs about $60 per person and is well worth the extra cost. Encounters are limited to 6 people and last about 30 minutes. We learned all about the penguins from Becky and Abby, two knowledgeable and friendly staff members that work with the ambassador penguins. Our encounter was in a separate area with a small pool where we sat while the keepers spoke to us, and 11 African penguins walked around us. We were able to pet them and take video and photos. Overall, it was a wonderful experience that is sure to be a lasting memory for any animal lover!!!

We used to go to the zoo yearly - taking our children and then our grandchildren. Absolutely loved the Maryland Zoo. However, something has changed. IWe hadn't gone for a few years and decided to go with our great-grandchild. The children's zoo is no more - otter, bobcat, cave, and that is pretty much it. Gone are the lily pads for the kids to walk across, the turtles to climb on - we were the only visitors in that area of the zoo. Rest of the zoo, animal out on exhibit were sparse - was not weather related - was 77 degrees and sunny. Bird aviaries not open due to avian flu concerns. Food prices very high and only 1 kiosk (with a long line) to order from or had to use your phone to order. Could not just go up to a window and order. We paid $80 for 3 burgers with fries, 2 sodas, a water, and a child's hot dog meal. On top of a $97 admission fee, it made for a pricey day. Watched 2 elderly people with walkers struggle to get on the tram to go back to the exit - but no employee offered to assist with them getting on tram or stowing their walker. That and the tram drops you at the top of the hill from the exit and then you must navigate down quite a steep hill. Last time we were there, the tram picked you up down close to the penguin exhibit and took you to within visual site of the exit in a flattened area. The zoo is remarkably clean. Very few staff out and about. It just was disappointing that it was not the zoo we have been accustomed to and loved over the years - even our youngest adult child (28) who accompanied us remarked how disappointing it was now.

We love this zoo. We especially enjoy the walk through the African experience. My favorite spot is the Lion encounter. The grands love all the animals. The one low point is the expense of food, drinks, snacks, and the gift shop. Very walkable. There are plenty of benches to sit and rest.
Take plenty of pictures and don't forget to include yourself in the shots. Make memories, you are never too old to go to the zoo

We had bought $130 tickets to go to the Brew at the Zoo event. Someone did not pay any attention as to how many tickets they should sell for one day at this event. When we arrived just 30 minutes after they opened the gates to enter there must have been at least 5K people in a long line that went ( I kid you not ) from the zoo entrance around the front of the entrance twice to the side parking lot up the driveway up the to road past the old reptile house . We went to the event last year and they keep the main event with the vendors in a confined area This was so crazy. You would just be in endless lines trying to get food or drinks, wall to wall people. We did not come with little ones but if we did I would have not felt it safe for them to be at such a event with drinking involved and that many people. We left and basically lost our money paid for our tickets. Unless they put a limit on how many to attend this event We will never recommend it nor will we ever attend it again.

Annual pass holders for many years. We love coming back and watching the baby monkeys and younger elephants get bigger and bigger each visit. Feeding the giraffes (extra charge) is something we do almost every visit. Food lines can get long and can be expensive, so don't be afraid to bring your own food to enjoy as your tour.

We went off season, in March, during mid-week. There was no crowd, the day was sunny and warm. A lot of animals were not out for viewing. The birds were not out for viewing due to bird flu issues. However, there was no crowd, the day was sunny and warm, and there were enough animals out to make the trip worth it. We got to see the penguin feeding! Excellent! Lots of walking, but they have a tram to take you from one area to another.

Went to the zoo today to enjoy the unseasonably warm (60s!) day. We were a group of 7 ranging from 12 to 85 and it had been years since some of us had been to the zoo. The Maryland Zoo is such a nice place to spend a day. The grounds and animal exhibits are really enjoyable. We had good sightings of lots of different animals. We were enjoying the grounds and the animals so much that we lost track of how far we had gone. After a while there, my 85-year old dad was ready to go. I asked a volunteer for the shortest route to the exit and she helped us with “mobility assist,” a golf cart to take my dad back tit the entrance. That was so helpful and unexpected. We really had a wonderful time at the zoo.

$30 per person. Very few lights. No music. No holiday atmosphere. Only a tiny area to explore. These were the highlights of the Zoo Lights experience. It was so dark and quiet it felt as though we had accidentally come after closing. The only lively area was the horrendously long line for the train. (Only one was being run, so the line stretched far back to the refreshment stand.) Zoo Lights had the air of a poorly funded, mismanaged, last-minute event by an organization that didn't really care. We will not be back.

Was ok but not like I expected it to be. No exotics and quite a few animals looked and acted depressed for lack of a better phrase

Is traveling by metro from Inner Harbor to The Zoo safe? What about by bus too?
Are a lot of the animals on display at the end of October? Should I even bother going if the temperature is in the mid 50s?

Are we able to see the giraffes now? Some reviews say they enjoyed seeing them and some say they were disappointed because renovations prevented them from seeing the giraffes so not sure. My son wants to see giraffes up close and the zoo in DC doesn't have any.
