This museum is a must stop if you are visiting Savannah. It gives you the history and information. that needs to be seen by all. The staff is beyond nice, helpful and informative.

Savannah in general, I feel, doesn’t do a great job of really showing their past nor the acknowledgement of it. This museum gives you that. I wasn’t able to spend as long as I wanted and will return on next visit.

My only disappointment with Savannah was not to see much of the black history around. There are dozens of tours that will tell you the story of the colonizers and even of the pirates, but even though black people are a huge part of the history of the whole state in Georgia, generally, it is hidden somewhere that is not that easy to access. But thankfully, the Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum was there.

It was our first stop in Savannah and certainly one of the most relevant storyteller museum we visit in the country of USA!

The museum is very rich in details and sometimes even overwhelming - in a good way - about this part of the history of black american people. Between photos, representations and pieces that came directly from that era, you will 100% have a immersive experience. My partner and I spent around 2,5hours inside and left feeling that we could have stayed much more.

I'm not the kind the person who writes reviews, but I feel very grateful for the visit and feel like this is no doubt a place everyone must check!

Also, congratulations to the Museum staff! They are very welcoming and kind people, that for sure know what they are talking about and are excellent guides through the history!

I can't wait to come back on my next visit to Savannah!

I visited the museum with my sister and it was a really wonderful experience. We didn't realize we were getting there a bit late and after the last tour had gone for the day but the museum Director Vaughnette happily invited us in and gave us a tour herself.

We learned a lot about the civil rights struggle specific to Savannah and it was all very interesting , challenging, and inspiring. The introductory video and panels of heros and sheros brought to life what the early NAACP mass meetings after Rev. Gilbert re-ignited the Savannah chapter must have been like. Our guide asked us how we felt learning about different things and what we took from different exhibits and it led to good discussions. The exhibits were presented in ways that gave you a sense of the vastness of the struggle yet in a digestible way.

Definitely worth a visit!

This small, but powerful museum is worth a visit. The thoughtfully-designed exhibits, the film, and the staff made this a great way to learn more about the history of the civil rights movement. I learned the origin of the term "Jim Crow" and so much more. While I am not a fan of crowds, I hope to see more people in this museum the next time I am there.

Having grown up in Savannah, it’s amazing to see where things like the W.W. Law Library got its name. People I grew up seeing give back to the community, staple buildings, all have a story in this museum contributing to the life I experienced growing up. I live in Atlanta now so it was interesting comparing the local Savannah movement, to the larger national narrative that I see in this city. For the preteen I brought with me, she had about as much interest as an average child in a museum would, but the staff encouraged her to use her new camera (in designated areas) which allowed her to engage in her on way. Speaking of the staff, they’re locals who experienced the things in the museum. Even more a reason to go. These 1st person accounts of our history are not always available.

I always try to get in a little of the Black History of any town I visit and so I was glad to have the opportunity to visit this museum and hear about Savannah’s role and experience in the Civil Rights movement. It is small but full of information and interesting facts - some areas are interactive and our guide was pleasant and enthused about telling the story - it was a little off the beaten path but accessible with a short walk from one of the Hop on Trolley stops. You should add it to your itinerary if like my young adult daughter and I, you are interested in history and culture.

Out of all the museums in Atlanta, I enjoyed this one very much. I learned so many new things about the civil rights movement in Savannah. Our tour guide, David, was the best. He was very personable and knowledgeable. I would definitely recommend it.

This was one of the stops offered to us on a Black History Tour of Savannah! Take your time when walking around, read the information, listen to it and learn. There is a plethora of information inside of here and you will not be disappointed.
