Another great experience because of the guide (Kyle). Informative tour that really explains how a late 18th century tavern worked.

Charles Washington (George Washington’s youngest brother) built this house and later sold it. After he sold it, the house became a tavern and inn.

Highlight is seeing the bar room. Had no idea a bar in the 18th century was literally behind bars to prevent theft. They also demonstrated a 18th century mousetrap and showed a checker set with pieces made out of whalebone.

The second floor rooms, which served as an inn, is self guided. Takes about thirty minutes to see everything.

The young lady who was our tour guide was very friendly and funny. We learned a lot about how integral taverns were to colonial life. They give AAA or Sr discounts. Highly recommend!

Great historical tavern with lots of history. The guides were very informative and gave a great talk on the local history dating from George Washington through the Civil War.

Went here earlier today. It was part of a heritage pass which we bought online through their site (thee buildings in the are for a small amount - about 40 for both total). The docents or volunteers are all super knowledgeable. The Tavern is original but nothing inside except the business license is original to the place. The did get period pieces so it's authentic to the time. There is a small yard out back but meh on that. Interesting local history and as everything seems to be, all connects to the Washington family. Anyway worth a stop and You see 3 rooms guided and then can go upstairs and see bedrooms.

Built around 1760 by George Washington's younger brother Charles, the Rising Sun Tavern looks very much like it did 260 years ago. They were having an open house the day of our visit and served cider and delicious Queen's cake on the porch before the tour. It has a very attractive colonial era interior design with mid green painted walls, like you see so often in homes of this era. The tavern room and bar were interesting as well as the short door heights. The only negative was not being able to see more than 3 rooms of the house. Charles only lived here for about 20 years, leaving around 1780 to build Happy Retreat in Charles Town, West Virginia. The grounds were small but attractive and there is a very very small gift shop as you leave.

Thank you very much! We feel it's a privilege to be able to tell the stories our building holds, including the life of Charles Washington and the role our tavern played in early Virginia history every day. We would love to have you back for one of our regular tours (outside of an event like our Holiday Open House) so that you can see more of our authentic 18th century building!

This was a really interesting tour and portrait of what life was like in colonial America. Our tour guide was great and very knowledgeable and I like that it was about an hour total, so we could move on to tour other sites in the same day. My one complaint was that we had tried to call twice prior to our visit to better understand their ticket prices and nobody picked up the phone- we decided not to do the $18 ticket for all of the sites since we didn't quite have time to do them all; but it would have been nice to know that in advance.

From Colonial times to surviving the War Between the State, the building is well worth the visit. The docents are in period dress and did a great job of telling the story of the tavern.

Tour was included on the Day Pass. Built in the 1760s for Charles Washington, younger brother of George Washington, and served as his residence while he lived in Fredericksburg. In 1792 John Frazer converted the house into a tavern known as the Golden Eagle. Great history tour that takes you through the era and many interesting artifacts. Sadly another stop that interior pictures not allowed. We wanted to share our stories with friends and family but can't remember everything we saw and learned because no pictures to keep those wonderful memories alive.

The tour guide (a young lady) was incredible! She gave us many insights and lot of information about the building, the occupants, and the furnishings. The tour couldn't have been better! If you are short of time and have to choose between sites, don't miss this tavern!
