One of the best trips I have been on. Jim was very knowledgeable of the area and wildlife we might encounter. He was always concerned about our comfort and whether we needed a break to stretch. I would highly recommend this company.

DO NOT TRUST JIM!!! My tour was in March, I didn't post a review hoping we could work this out, but Jim has failed on his end. Our driver was just a taxi driver. Multiple times she would put us in situations where an accident could easily have happen. I spoke to Jim about my experience and he promised me a solution. It is June and I've made multiple phone calls, left multiple vm and no response! DO NOT TRUST THIS BUSINESS!

Now that I’m back home, safe and sound, I wanted to let you know Jim, that I was extremely gullible by believing your “reason” for taking my money up front for the “Arctic Tour”. (I’ve been told that may not have even been legal ~ I’ll have to look into that....).

First off, you advertise as a tour. All tours I have ever been on, the drivers were knowledgeable of the area(and have never missed the turnoff to the place/s we were visiting).

2. You advertise lunch, drinks AND snacks. I didn’t know that meant at our first stop to get gas for the trip (that’s a first!) it was suggested to us to purchase our own!

3. Subway doesn’t open up till 8 am and since we were picked up 30 minutes after the advertised pick up time of 6:30am that made it 7 am. With the sandwiches being flatten, they were obviously purchased at least the night before. No chips, no cookie, nada!

4. Having 3 experienced mechanics on board, plenty of violations were noticed. Cracked driver side windshield, two spare tires that were worn beyond the wear bars, numerous cracks showing age possibly way beyond legal limits; on the van, 3 snow tires and one with “all weather” highway tread which on more than a few occasions created traction problems

5. Don’t even get me started on the driver backing up (having passed the entrance to the Yukon Camp)in the highway lane with a semi baring down on us and my husband yelling “there’s a truck coming, there’s a truck coming” because she had to use the bathroom! More likely had to smoke. We all sat in the van

6. Who in their right mind checks the radiator level with the vehicle on? Just so happened the “checking” was in front of a water dispenser with the hope that we would go sample the water (so someone could probably have a smoke?) We all sat in the van.

7. Do you not have employees to drive your “tours”? Or do you just cross your fingers that you will find someone?

8. A 12 hour “tour” turned into a 15 hour “ride”

9. I wish I had looked up your business license (to see that it had expired on 12/31/2017) and read reviews (no wonder people notified their credit card companies not to pay) before I ever contacted you!

It’s probably useless to ask for a partial refund. But, I will wait a week before I post my review. I can’t speak for my husband

Please please please do not take this tour! You will regret it from beginning to end! First off this is the furthest thing from a "tour" Right off the bat my husband asked our driver how far it was to the Arctic Circle and she said, I don't know, almost 400 miles? Turns out it was189 miles??? We were picked up in the morning about a half hour late and the first thing we did was drive to a mom-and-pop truck stop and she told us to go get some snacks. Lunch and snacks were supposed to be a part of this tour? So we all piled back into the van and took off. The van had two cracks in the driver-side windshield and there were three snow tires and one vehicle Tire on this van. It is required to have two spares to drive the Dalton Highway and those two spares were cracked and old and almost bald. Our lunch consisted of smashed Subway sandwiches that had beef and cheese only and we had to fix our own sandwiches pretty much standing in the Wind and there were no chips. The sandwiches had to have been bought in the night before because we did call and Subway was not open early in the morning so they were day old!

Our driver did not know anything about the trip and when she did talk nobody in the back could hear her and we had to stop multiple times so she could smoke a cigarette and every time she got back into the van we were all subject to smelling her. She also stopped and squatted to urinate at the back of the van alongside the roadway.

This company is very shotty and very unprofessional and I would not recommend anyone take this tour!

It was definitely a ”ride.” While the tour states they would provide various things – a tour, lunch and snacks, you assume the drive would be safe too. However, “assume” (if you know what it means) is the correct word for Jim’s tour. For a mere $200 you get a long ride with many smoking breaks or pit stops for the driver. Be aware, the pit stop does not always have a building involved, she hides behind the van. There is no tour only mumblings are heard from the noisy interior of the van, usually her life history because she has no knowledge of Alaska. The lunch provided is day old Subway sandwiches (only roast beef) with condiments laid out on the seats with no utensils. Snacks? There is none, but then the sandwiches are consumed and no evidence left behind! Before embarking on this drive – pack a lunch, check the tires (mismatched and cracked spares), and read up on the Arctic Circle. The drive to the Circle is worth it, but certainly not this “tour.”

We were a group of 4 women who booked the arctic circle tour online. From the very beginning, we experienced unprofessional behavior from the proprietor “Jim” and it only got worse from there. We booked the arctic circle tour, which was touted as a guided, educational tour.

Here are some of the lowlights from our horrible experience:
1. “Jim” booked us on the wrong date and then tried to blame us for the problems.
2. After sorting that out and then confirming the correct date, he called us repeatedly over a week’s period wanting to re-confirm and talk about... (???). We were already uncomfortable with his behavior at this point. We then also learned he had called the lodge we were staying at least 20 times to look for us. He couldn’t reach us at the lodge (bc we were out and about) and he didn’t have the correct name of our hotel reservation, so he then canceled our reservation. When we spoke to him again, he rambled on and blamed us, before he re-confirmed our arctic circle tour for the next day.
3. We were told to be ready at 7am. Our guide/driver did not arrive until 745am.
4. The driver/guide who showed up was very honest with us, which we really appreciated. While driving, he told us that he JUST met Jim 2 days ago, that he knew almost nothing about him, and that Jim had called him frantically the night before begging him to take us on this tour. (We later learned he had asked many other random people to take us). This man who picked us up told us numerous times he had never done a tour before and wasn’t a people person. This came up after I started asking him what our day would entail, because he wasn’t talking much. He told us he knew the road well, though. We learned this and then promptly started experiencing car problems.
5. The Steese Highway to go to the Arctic Circle is considered the most dangerous road in North America, so the level of safety of the driver and vehicle are of utmost importance. There is no cell service out there, no walkable areas to get help, roads can be icy and it’s below freezing right now in the day time. After we passed the last bit of civilization (in the form of a gas station), the car began fully breaking down at regular intervals. It kept overheating and died every time we tried to go up even a small incline. I lost count, but I would guess that we broke down and restarted, to break down again, at least 8 times. It was literally FREEZING. By this point, we were adamantly just wanting to get help and get out of there.
6. The driver (obviously he was not an actual tour guide) told us that Jim had assured him that the car was in good shape and recently serviced. At this point, the driver was obviously upset with Jim as well. When the driver called Jim, to tell him we were broken down on the side of the road, Jim proposed some crazy talk about it must have been some guide that he recently fired that compromised the vehicle. WHAT?!?!? We later heard that the employee had quit, so who knows what the truth is.
At this point, we felt that we needed to take matters into our own hands. We were so fortunate that some tourists from Oregon stopped to try to help us. They tried to tow us up to the top of the ridge, so we could coast down, but the tow tie the driver attached, broke immediately. SKETCHY!
The Oregonians were kind enough to say yes to driving 2 from our party back to our lodge, so we could get some real help. They had been trailing behind us. Road angels, for sure.
7. One of the wonderful employees from our lodge drove up to pick up the 2 remaining members of our stranded party. She commented that she thought she smelled alcohol on his breath.
8. Jim never called us to apologize or attempt any contact after we were all back to our lodge safely. The lodge did tell me he kept calling them repeatedly though, talking nonsense. Apparently he was only interested in losing future business from this lodge.

We found Jim’s business ethic to be the bottom of the barrel. To sum it up: *poor communication with a lot of meaningless rambling and blaming. *Jim is clearly interested in the money making (tour cost for 4 was $880), without having interested/experienced/qualified/SAFE staff available. Apparently, anyone off the street will do. *Our enjoyment and safety felt of no importance.

This is probably the longest review I’ve ever written! If you’ve stayed with me this far, please consider your safety as the number one priority in this beautiful, but potentially dangerous wilderness area. There are so many other choices of tour operators. It’s hard to believe that any other company would be this unscrupulous. I hope there is no worse than this. Be safe out there!

We booked the Arctic Circle Tour and have no complaints. I made the arrangements by sending an e-mail to Jim, which he followed up with a phone call. Jim picked us up from our hotel and was right on time. We had eight people in our party - three generations of family ranging in age from 8 to 73 - and we all enjoyed the trip up the Dalton Highway. It is not a luxury ride (it can't be due to the road conditions) but the van was clean and comfortable, and Jim knew the road like the back of his hand. He stopped every once in a while to let us take photos and/or use the restrooms. We saw two moose during the drive, and some beautiful scenery, which changed as we went further north. Once at the Arctic Circle, we had a nice picnic spread of Subway sandwiches with all the fixings and a variety of drinks to choose from. There were plenty of utensils, plates and napkins. Jim took group photos for us and led us on a quick walk in the tundra. Several other tour companies came and left while we were there and literally rolled out red carpets for people to stand on while getting their photos taken at the Arctic Circle sign. One tour guide even played a note on a trombone every time someone from his group got their photo taken. You won't get that kind of fanfare with Turtle Tours, but if you are looking for a salt-of-the-earth, no-nonsense, interesting and entertaining guide, go with Jim!

We booked a tour with "Jim" the owner of the business
I have attached a list of problems we encountered on our trip. Do not use this operator
There were nine of us and we paid almost $1,800.00 for this "tour".

List of issues
Alaska Arctic Turtle Tours INC.
1 (907) 457-1798
Fairbanks AK
1. We went online and reserved what we thought was tour to the Arctic Circle.
2. The response came from Jim with the email address "wildalaska@alaska.net" which made me believe that we were booking a tour with one of the major tour companies. (Just a scam)
3. We booked a party of nine and later, Jim called back after being guaranteed we would be the only ones on the trip, he addies another person to the trip.
4. Jim said he would have the driver pick us up first and then go get the 10th passenger. However the driver said she decided to get him first and he was nice enough to let one of our ladies who had motion sickness issues get in the front.
5. The driver told us she was sick when she picked us up. But went ahead and drove anyway.
6. We tried to talk with her (the driver) and she couldn't speak loud enough to be heard by us.
7. We didn't receive any information from driver about what was going and on and what we were seeing on "tour". We would have been better off reading Milepost out loud.
8. The she (the driver )didn't know the answers to basic questions which we asked on the way upand back about things we were viewing
9. The driver didn't slow down for frost heaves that were marked on paved and dirt portions many times (orange cones) we were thrown all over the van when this occurred.
10. The driver missed the turn to viewpoint that had been requested had to turn around to go back.
11. We were supposedly to have a meal included in the "tour" however no utensils were available for the meal, which was just roast beef sandwiches with cheese. She blamed "Jim".
12. The sandwiches were Subway sandwiches and all the fixing, which we had available but had to be grabbed in your hand to put on your sandwich we couldn't even couldn't cut the footlong sandwiches, but driver offered her pocket knife to slice them which we declined.
13. All of the chips with the meal were "hot" chips she again blamed "Jim". Most of us including the kids wouldn't /couldn't eat them.
14. One AC vent couldn't be adjusted no louvers and blew down on two of us for the whole trip.
15. The driver cut the van off (no A/C) at short stops and temps were high.
16. The driver parked once on a downhill space when others were available the steps from the van were very dangerous and difficult for seniors to negotiate.
17. The driver was carrying beer in the van to a friend up north in exchange for a milkshake she got free.
18. Another one of us was concerned that she was about to go to sleep and started asking questions to
19. The driver was speeding (60+) 10 plus over in heavy rain ☔️ on Dalton Hwy. (paved portion for several miles).
20. The driver appeared to avoid specific stops along the way and go to places where she had friends.
21. She did stop to assist a driver who hit a moose and let him use her phone to contact authorities
22. I contacted the owner "Jim" to ask for some relief but was told that he coined run up and down the road without being paid. He asked what was wrong and I advised him of the points above and he said he would "can" her when he got back. He stated again than the couldn't refund anything.
23. I highly recommend that everyone avoid this company.

We were call back by Jim and were promised by Him that he make it right on Monday
Today is Wednesday and he hasn't called back

The person who "runs" this company has no business being in business. Our first tip off should have been his not returning calls. Then when he did, he confirmed our tour for 7:00 AM on Wednesday. We were all ready@ 7 AM and he never showed up. Finally got a hold of him and he said we were scheduled for Thursday. Sorry no way do those two days sound the same. The people at the Fairbanks info booth at the start of the Iditarod dog sled race had recommended this company. They should be ashamed of themselves.

At the tail end of a cruise to Alaska we decided to book a tour to the Arctic Circle. After reviewing trip advisor reviews, we selected Arctic Turtle Tours and were not disappointed. RayDean was an excellent guide and inspired confidence in her knowledge of the areas we visited and her driving ability. While we saw only a few examples of wildlife we were blown away by the beautiful vistas, the remoteness of the areas, the challenges of the road, and the friendliness of the folks we met at our stops. We are in awe of the folks who live "off of the grid". We highly recommend this tour and wish we had more time to explore beyond the Arctic circle, to further points north.
