Great trip to see an excellent glacier. Calm waters. Staff helpful. Food adequate but simple.
It’s cold, so dress warm and in layers.

Boat Tour/ drop off was salvaged by an excellent Captain. Electrical challenges sorted quickly and a sea trial commenced to get everyone where they needed to be. Hats off to Captain Naomi who made the whole trip for us.

Booking was a bit challenging for a kayaker drop off as it’s not arranged through the lodge. That felt a bit disconnected, but it all worked out in the end.

This day cruise was a highlight of our 30 days in Alaska. The National Park Ranger that narrated the day was phenomenal. We saw almost everything on this tour: costal brown bear, pods of orca whales, sea lions, sea otters, mountain goat, puffin birds. The scenery is gorgeous. The boat was very comfortable and food was decent, the crew was friendly and helpful as well.

This review is for the day boat tour. I wrote a separate one for the lodge.

During this tour, I couldn’t help but compare our experience to the one we had in Kenai Fjords National Park. Compared to that tour, the actual boat on this tour wasn’t great. There was limited outdoor areas and almost no outdoor seating. Most of the indoor seating lacked tables. The ride itself was therefore not as enjoyable and most of it was spent inside. Our seats were in the middle, so we didn’t have very good views (board early to get those!) That was not what I expected. If I had to pick one boat ride in a National Park in Alaska, I would have opted for the other one. (We also just liked Kenai Fjords itself a bit better).

That said, we were in a National Park, so of course it was amazing! We saw brown bears, mountain goats, sea lions, and tons of sea otters, in addition to the glaciers. I also appreciated the ranger commentary and the watercolor art that we did in the afternoon. My kids loved that the staff gave out full size candy bars as a snack and that they were able to earn their junior ranger badges directly on the boat.

There was nothing about this trip we enjoyed, nothing! Getting there was a pain and expensive, but that's another matter. The lodge itself does not meet minimum hotel standards, but it's a monopoly via the federal government so what do you expect: poor service, mediocre food, minimum hours, no TV, no Internet, no Cell, WiFi in lobby only competing with crowds to get a seat on the floor, worst of all - NO BAR to kill the misery. 250 feet and 5 flights of stairs along wet and slippery plank walkways carrying all your luggage just to get to/from your room, which was small and cramped and no put or unpack or use out of your luggage. Wet, cold and raining all the time, so many mosquitos swarming they could carry you away after sucking out all your blood. We came mainly for the Glacier Bay Boat Tour, a painful 8 hours of rain and fog and 130 miles later we thought we could see parts of one glacier through the clouds, perhaps even a passing glimpse at another - whoop, better glacier sightings from Kenai Fjords tour. Personally, I would never recommend this trip to anyone, so many better choices around.

The Day Boat tour was excellent. The ride was smooth and we saw an abundance of wildlife. The views of the glaciers were incredible. The pilot knew the areas of possible sightings and would slow for us to view the wildlife. Great photo opportunities. Staff was efficient and friendly. The onboard Park Ranger was outstanding, communicating interesting facts about the wildlife and the glaciers. The Junior Ranger program for kids was well thought out and planned. Using glacier water to paint watercolors was a great touch.

The Lodge does an admirable job to provide clean and comfortable rooms and appetizing meals at the edge of the wilderness. The star here is the day trip by boat to the upper reaches of Glacier Bay. Truly a spectacular experience!

even though it was a rainy day we got to see a lot of birds and seals on south marble island and mountain goats on another island. we passed quite a few humpback whales on the way to john hopkin's glacier. we picked up 2 kayakers on another island and saw a coastal bear and some even saw a wolf (1st one for this season for our national park guide). I love that there were a couple of seals bobbing along the shoreline as we were loading the kayaks on the boat.

Both the crew and national park guide were awesome. Lunch was included in the cost and free hot drinks were available throughout the trip. Bathrooms were very clean as well as the inside cabin and outside deck area of the boat.

as it was the end of the season the boat wasn't full and passengers had an opportunity to talk to each other. we even got to see how the park guides got picked up and dropped off from the huge cruise ship. It was pretty interesting.

This was a great tour -- 5/5. It's a great way to see areas of the park that most (like me) would never get to see. Glaciers and wildlife -- it's a great way to spend a day. The boat has great viewing areas and (somewhat) comfortable indoor areas to stay warm and dry. The crew was pleasant and seemed very capable. I think it's an excellent value for the price.

But on the day of our tour (June 14), the tour would be described as whale "spotting" versus whale watching. We spotted maybe a dozen humpback whales -- many were announced by the Captain himself. But look fast, because our boat didn't slow down at all. I heard rumors that the boat may need to pick up kayakers (we didn't pick up any kayakers), or something about regulations not allowing the boat to slow for whales (wouldn't you want the boat to slow around whales?). Regardless, our boat slowed to a crawl at locations like South Marble Island to see sea lions, and we even crept along very slowly to see mountain goats and a brown bear (which was great). And the boat spends at good amount of time enjoying Margerie Glacier.

Just keep your whale "watching" expectations in check and enjoy the day.

While vacationing at Glacier Bay Lodge in late May, 2022, my wife and I took the Glacier Bay Boat Tour. The tour is 7.5 hours long. We rode on the St. Juvenaly. The boat travels north from Bartlett Cove up the length of Glacier Bay to Marjorie Glacier and back. There is a possible stop to drop off/pick up kayakers on the way to Marjerie Glacier and a possible stop at another location on the return trip. I believe we had 46 passengers on a boat that can hold over twice that. The lower deck is mostly enclosed, glass windows all around, very comfortable padded seats, a snack bar and restrooms. The upper deck has a small enclosed area for the captain and a few chairs for passengers. We had a beautiful, sunny day for our excursion. When the boat was moving at a good speed, it was quite chilly and windy on the open decks. Throughout the trip, Ranger John would point out points of interest and attempt to answer any questions passengers had. It seemed members of the crew were always on the lookout for wildlife. When wildlife was spotted, the captain would stop so we could get a good look. Throughout the trip we saw sea otters, sea lions, humpback whales, porpoises, mountain goats, brown bears, various birds and even a moose. While watching a brown bear on the shore, two humpback whales surfaced right next to the boat, eliciting a collective "Whoa" from the passengers watching the bear. The boat stayed by Marjorie Glacier quite a while, giving all passengers the ability to take photos. On the return trip, lunch was served. Several passengers stretched out and took naps on the return trip. We were most fortunate that on the way to Marjerie Glacier, 4 kayakers to be picked up were not at the pickup location. That saved time. And on the return trip there were no kayakers at the 2nd pick up location. This meant more time for wildlife or scenery stops. Our vacation to the inside passage would have been incomplete without the ride in Glacier Bay on the St. Juvenaly.
