If you like scenic drives you have to do this one. Scenic not crowded. Some places we went extended distance without seeing another vehicle. Gorgeous when sunlight hits at an angle in particular.

Beautiful rock formations and colors. Easy to get to some trails, pull- outs for pictures. Need to get a permit to see the wave, at least 2 days in advance.

There are several ways to visit the Vermillion Cliffs...we simply drove by on the way to North Rim and looked at the massive red cliffs and amazing boulder formations along the bottom. Definitely worth the effort. We also turned in at Lees Ferry (not officially in the park) to enjoy some additional views and sit along the Colorado River before it goes into the Grand Canyon. Obviously to fully enjoy the park, it requires much planning and ultimately much hiking. Maybe some day...

Do not bother to go out of the way . IT is a long drive and aside from seeing more of the same, there is nothing to see

Camped at Lee's Ferry Campground, right beside these magnificent cliffs and thought they were so worth the 4 hour drive from Valley of Fire, another awesome site. The Cliff Dwellings were so unique and the cliffs themselves such tantalizing shades of reds, tans, and oranges. Take the extra hour and drive to Antelope Canyon near Page, and book a required Navajo tour through the short canyon. I have never seen anything quite so exquisite. The Southwest is definitely my favorite part of the US for natural beauty, but get out of the car and see it!

There is so much red in the area that one part can blend in with the next both in your memory and in fact. This is a beautiful drive if you are in the area.

Spectacular Views along the 89A. Start at either end, Jacob Lake or the Navajo Bridge. This is a very popular off road area (with high clearance try BLM Road 1065), with some of the best scenic hikes in the West. Some hikes will need a permit; so, if interested, check this out first. You can also sign up with a tour company that does off road and hiking adventures. There are information centers at Jacob Lake, Kanab, and Navajo Bridge. Along the main route you'll see sweeping views of the landscape. There are also several lodges, rest stops as well as the Cave Dwellers House. The Lee's Ferry area is the most tourist friendly. There's a fee to enter but most visitors already have some sort of a federal pass. This is a major put-in spot for river trips down the Colorado. It's also an end-point for the shorter trips from the Glen Canyon dam. There are several trails and historical spots here, one trail up a mountain ridge and a spur off of it that follows the river a bit upstream. But there are some washouts on the latter, though nothing non-negotiable or dangerous. Just keep your eyes sharp for the continuation of the trail over the impacted gully areas. And if it's hot, there's really no shade. The Lee's Ferry site also contains a balanced rock landscape, but there are also a couple of other of these sites outside the fee area along the drive. Some active adventures like to hike on the Cathedral Wash trail. On the leg toward the river you might have to negotiate several small drop downs. For a relaxing respite, pull into the Paria Beach area and watch the rapids that are being formed from the debris flow into the Colorado from the Paria. Good place to picnic. But camping is on the other side of the road.

Is the Vermilion Cliffs open to the public? I am not sure what is open or closed nowadays due to COVID. We plan to go there in November and is this just something you drive by (scenic drive) or can you go hiking? Thanks!

Yes, it's free. I don't know about hiking trails. We hiked along the gorgeous shoreline.

I would driving from Zion to page. Is it better if I stopover in Vermillion? Is everything accessible by car and short hikes?
Skrevet 27. august 2020
I would go to the ranger station in Kanab and they can direct you to all these. They have hikes where you can pick up a permit for that day as well. They are also changing the permits for the Wave and making it easier to get these. The cnange has not gone into place yet but may be by the time you arrive.
Also, if there is any bad weather and washed out roads, they can give you this information. This entire area requires a 4 wheel drive vehicle. ( All wheel is not good enough), They have a list of local guides who can take you into this area that all have 4 wheel drive.

How far is Vermillion Cliffs monument from Page?
Skrevet 16. mai 2019
A little less than 70 miles. It should take just over one hour if you do not stop.
Skrevet 17. mai 2019
There appears to be no limitation to what you can do out here other than you may have to hop a barbed wire fence. It is quite isolated and no official supervision that I could see. There are a couple motels as stated above. Surprised they get enough business to survive as they are off the main roads. They appeared pretty nice driving by.

Is this off of 89 or 89A? Google maps shows a different location than TripAdvisor.

Do we need a special permit or pass to visit the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument?
Skrevet 18. februar 2019
There are many trails that do not require permits and several that do.
You can apply for permits online or go into the BLM office in Kanab. Sometimes especially in the winter, they don't even have lotteries for some of the trails and you can just purchase a permit.
Please be aware that 4 wheel drive vehicles are usually required on the roads especially if there is any kind of snow or rain.

Hi,
My family will visit PAGE, AZ in coming Dec 24th and 25th. We will take an antelope tour in the morning of 24th. Please recommend where should we go in the rest of the time. TIA

A tour of the dam is interesting. Also the Horseshoe Bend Park is worth the short hike.
Skrevet 22. desember 2018
Did you get a lottery ticket to walk through or can we see many beautiful sights without winning the lottery?
Skrevet 8. november 2018
The tour we took (White Pockets) was spectacular and did not require a permit. There are only a few that require permits and we could not plan far enough in advance to even apply for one. There are many magnificent options from Kanab (in both Vermillion Cliffs NM and Grand Staircase of the Escalante NM) that also do not require permits.
