We try to visit any national park unit along our way when traveling. We were fortunate to arrive at the ranch in time for the house tour. Our guide was very informative and we learned a lot about 19th century ranching in the US.

While dog sitting for friends I was looking for things to do in the area and came across this historical site. It was great to be able to walk freely around the grounds and go into any open building to explore. It was interesting to see how the pioneers lived and where they decided to settle. I didn’t have time to tour the house. Being out on the grounds of the ranch was so relaxing. I enjoyed seeing the garden too. It reminded me of my grandmas garden.

We love visiting National Park Service sites and we were able to stop here while roadtripping from Glacier NP to Yellowstone NP. It was very quiet when we came and there were only a couple other people, so we were able to wander around the ranch and see as much of it as we wanted. It's very well-preserved and it's amazing to think that these ranches were all open range in the 1800s. The staff were nice and helpful and we were able to learn quite a bit here. I would recommend it for anyone who enjoys history and is in the area.

We stopped here while traveling across Montana. This historic ranch includes original buildings and offers tours and interpretive displays of early ranching life in the area. Guided tours of the house are available at set times throughout the day. Several employees were stationed at locations in the adjacent buildings including the blacksmith shop and the chuck wagon. We enjoyed learning about the family that developed the ranch. It is well worth a stop when you are in the area.

Loved the authenticity of a real working ranch operation and the provenance of 150 years of continuing ownership, maintenance and pride of operation. The draft horses working the haying load were awesome to watch, performing much as had been done a century ago. The gorgeously preserved house contained many elegant period pieces and even needlework examples from Mrs. Kohrs craftmanship. The bunkhouse stables, smithing shop and carriage houses were in terrific shape and well-described on the placards. Kudos for the excellent curation of a slice of Montana's genuine history!

What a surprise find and worthwhile stop on our cross country journey. Less than a mile off I90 at the Deer Lodge exit we stumbled on this beautifully maintained original 1860s ranch property. Great intro by NP ranger and fun historical interpretation by a charming volunteer in period dress. Interesting and very well done !

Very impressive for a free tour. Unfortunately they did not let you take photographs of the inside of the house. It is mostly original artifacts inside. Very impressed for house of this age would be preserved this level. Also includes original barns and a bunch of historic carriages.

This was a fascinating stop for us while touring Montana, especially if your interested in early ranching history. Take the house tour and walk the grounds - It is well done by the NPS and the Park Rangers were excellent. The preservation of this site is one more treasure in the National Park System, we are so fortunate to have. There is no cost to view the entire site.

Very educational. Wonderful house tour. The overall ranch seemed a little smaller than I anticipated.Mike at the chuck wagon can't be missed. If you like history and are driving through the area, it definitely is worth a couple hrs of your time.

If we miss the house tour, can we drive around the ranch?
Skrevet 12. august 2019
You can WALK around the grounds. There are multiple outbuildings with excellent descriptions of the various displays. In addition, there is a blacksmith creating items and explaining the brands on display and a chuck wagon experience.
Skrevet 13. august 2019
How much time should I allow for a visit? We're driving through the area.
Skrevet 12. desember 2018
You can get through the tour in about an hour if you arrive at the start of the house tour then you're on your own for the rest of the grounds. If not to be rushed, allow 1 1/2 hours.
Skrevet 13. desember 2018
This is just outside of Deer Lodge. The ranch is self guided. If you want a tour of the house, I believe it's every hour.
