Padmanabhapuram, a small town in Kanyakumari District claims an important place in history, for it was once a thriving capital of the powerful Venad kingdom that ruled over the southern regions of the present Kerala state.
Wooden structures with exceptional arcitectural style!
Manimeda, Navarathri Mandapam, Uppirikka Malika, Homappura, oottupura, lakshmi Vilasam,Ayudhappura and Ambari Mukappu all are very impressive.
Really felt Royal !!!

Beautiful palace that is very poorly managed. On busy days, like this long weekends, crowds overwhelm hallways. Staff has not developed any manner of staggering groups moving through the building. There no information beyond what you can find in Wikipedia. The staff on-site is unfriendly and uninformed. I would probably recommend going there with a guide can help one negotiate crowds and arcane shoe removing protocol, as well as provide good compendium of historic facts.
The disrepair, water leaks and other damage are disconcerting.

Big Indian Tours

Historical Significance: The palace boasts a rich history spanning 400 years, and it is meticulously preserved to offer visitors a glimpse into the past. The guided palace tour provides a deep understanding of South Indian architecture, allowing visitors to appreciate its intricate details and craftsmanship. Its wooden architecture, intricate carvings, mural paintings, antique furniture, and hidden passages all contribute to the immersive experience.
Guided Tour Experience: The organized tour is complemented by knowledgeable guides stationed throughout the palace, offering insights into the significance of each structure and area. Spending about 2 hours exploring the palace allows for a comprehensive experience, delving into the various aspects of its history and architecture.
Entrance Fee: The entrance fee is a charge of Rs 40 per adult. There's also a fee of Rs 20 for using a phone camera to take pictures and Rs 60 for DSLR cameras. The pricing is reasonable, considering the rich cultural and historical value the palace offers. Try avoiding long weekends and public holidays as there will be huge rush here.

It was sad to visit this historic site that has so much to offer to tourists & see very poor upkeep & signage. I would not recommend it to people visiting internationally. It’s rich in architecture & history and yet there is barely any information printed out and posted for visitors to understand the architecture & how the spaces were used. The volunteers there give you a basic introduction to each room “this is the dining hall” or “this is the ladies waiting room” but that’s about it. Most of the directional signage is broken. Many areas are closed off with sad broken, mismatched, uneven barriers. It’s hard to get a good photo of many areas (the dance hall is a great example of this) because of these barricades, garbage, old furniture, broken rails, electrical wires, exposed power panels & tiles/debris shoved in many corners. See pics. I’m sure the government of Kerala can do better.
Right from the entrance gate, water fountains, to the room where you leave your shoes needs updating. India is so rich in culture so it’s always upsetting to see it maintained & presented in such a sad state.

Visited this on own way to Kanyakumari. Lovely Nepalese pagoda style palace. Has low arches and doors so beware you don't hit your head. Beautifully ceiling with unique wooden carvings. Well preserved but the local government.

This wooden mansion is unique but doesn’t live up to its name of palace.
It’s quite plain.
A few rooms look dramatic due to the light filtering through the wooden slats.
Visit only if you are passing through this area

The place mainly carved with tick wood. You will feel it's a small palace at start , but gradually you enter and go inside its being bigger and bigger. Thin corridor's for safety, place for king , queen , grand quuen, english visitors, dance room, place fo feast , arms stores..... many more... Maximum part is made of wood and stones. a must visit place.

The Palace is definitely a must-visit in your itinerary of South India. The wooden carvings are astonishing!
The palace is very well organised and maintained. The sign boards inside the Palace are very helpful and give a proper full tour of the Palace. Also, the authorities inside explain about the different spots. The Palace is surrounded by lush green trees and plants. It was a very pleasant experience!

Very big palace of Travancore dynasty. It was the original palace till 1790. Later, it became winter palace. The palace is so big with so many things to see. It takes us to generation 300 years back. Very beautiful and well maintained palace. Must visit. there is also nearby museum which holds the items of the bygone era. thoroughly enjoyed the visit.

How shall I reach from Kanyakumari railway station?
John R

Two suggestions
1. Travel by train is very circuitous for this short distance place. You have to come to Nagercoil Junction; proceed to Vadaserry bus stand by an auto (Rs.130/-); get a bus to a place called 'Thuckalay' (20 - 30 mts drive); get an auto to Padmanabhapuram palace (just 2 KMs. Instead of this follow plan B
2. Plan B. From kanyakumari, there are buses to Trivandrum directly. Board the bus; Avail ticket to 'Thuckalay' (about 45 mts to 1 hr drive). Get down at Thuckalay and hire an auto (2 KMs only). This is very simple.

1. Below 6 yrs no ticket is necessary and for school going children concessional rate is there. But don't forget to carry Identity proof.
2. Public Transport is available. But if you can read Tamil language then it will be advantage for you. After leaving Bus, you'll have to go to that palace by other vehicle.
3. Restaurant is just outside the Palace campus near car stand. You can find there fruits also.
the Kerala Government is the competent authority to look after the palace, the rules and regulations shall modify in accordance with public/passengers most comfort and prevailing circumstances of the near by/surrounding places within the ambit of the Sri Padmanabha Swamy Palace, if still doubt please contact 4651 250 255, hope this answer is most suitable
