This museum offered an excellent insight into the world of free people of color. The costumed guide made a very fine presentation, using artifacts in the museum. I came away with a new perspective on the f.p.c.

An authentic home whose first floor was turned into a museum about the Free People of Color of New Orleans during the times of slavery. Beautiful and authentic artwork from that era and historical information about the Code Noir (Black Code, etc.) detailed how African-Americans and Africans from that era were to be treated in NOLA (could be for all of Louisiana as well, but not entirely sure), authentic freedom papers, documents, paintings, portraits, etc.

If you are interested in what life was like for Free People of Color in New Orleans, or really, just more information about the topic of Free Persons of Color during the times of slavery, then this museum is a place that one absolutely must visit. So much history was provided that gave you a slight sense of what it must have been like for both enslaved people and free people of color. I found it fascinating and informative. It is a very small museum, so you can see everything easily in an hour. The owner/donor of the museum was also present that day, and she had so much knowledge about the topic as a whole. There was a person dressed in garments from that era who also told us information about Free Persons of Color while using the vernacular and manner of speaking of that time as well.

If you are like me and want to know more about your roots in general, definitely check out this place. Or, if you are not very familiar with the topic of Free People of Color in New Orleans, then this is definitely the place to be to learn all there is to know about the topic.

What an outstanding, entertaining, and interesting tour! It starts with a surprise—no revealers here. The presenters are engaging and interactive with the ~30 audience members.

We were two elderly couples who happened on this tour—given only on Fridays and Saturdays.

We learned not only about the freed slaves in NOLA but also about NOLA’s history in general.

The black cabdriver who picked us up asked, “What’s there?” So it’s a hidden gem in NOLA not to be missed.

I went there wanting to learn the story of the free non European. I got the truth and nothing but the truth. I was overjoyed to learn what people can do when unfettered by racist laws. I was also saddened to learn what happened when the United States took over and promoted their racist policies. I was reminded that Americans play the long game when it comes to eroding peoples rights.

Hands down this was my best experience in New Orleans. We just happened upon this beautiful and perfectly maintained exhibit adjust a day after a taking an extremely disappointing tour of a local historic plantation, Oak Alley, where they inexplicably made the entire experience about the people who enslaved hundreds of humans, rather than about the slaves themselves. This loser slave-owner family that, despite having 200 slaves working around the clock for free, still managed to go bankrupt. Hardly a single word about the slaves themselves. Apparently they’ve made no effort whatsoever to trace the lineage of the hundreds of people who actually literally built the place from the mud up and were forced to live like dogs by this horrible, horrible, disgusting, rancid family.
But this museum was so beautiful, and so informative. The tour guide was perhaps the best guide I’ve ever had the pleasure of listening to. She taught us so much about what life was actually like for people of color here. It was heartbreaking, and incredibly inspiring.
Please visit and support them. The neighborhood they are in is beautiful as well. Willie Mae’s is a five minute walk away. Make a day of it! Just don’t miss this museum!

What a great little museum and curators! We loved the experience and it was very enlightening.
Right off the Canal St. Streetcar too if I remember correctly.
I would definitely suggest this to anyone visiting The Big Easy!

The Museum of Free People of Color was the high point among many during my trip to New Orleans. Our "guide" through time, whose name I wish I remembered was spectacular, presenting history in the first person. As an actor she was spell-binding. I truly felt like I visited her family.
The history of Free People of Color was (not surprisingly) one I never heard about in school, and the history of these proud, educated, affluent and influential Black Americans was enlightening to learn about. I came away with a joyousness that this information, and artifacts from that time are being gathered and presented by Kim and other staff members. The neighborhood is also vibrant and full of life . So great to go beyond the French Quarter into places where folks actually live! It is my hope that the Museum of Free People of Color will continue to grow and thrive as a valuable source of hope and education for all Americans. .

This is not a museum, as such. But the tour guide was so knowledgeable and enlightening. Highly recommend stopping here for an understanding of what happened to the free people of color that came to New Orleans from Haiti.

I’m so glad we came to this museum; Kim is not simply a tour guide, she is a historian and clearly an expert in her field. She educated us about Free People of Colour before slavery became profitable; I walked away from her tour with a newfound understanding of this part of Louisiana’s history and the lasting effects still felt today. I will be following up with some of the books/documents she mentioned in her tour.

Kim also touched on the very unfortunate gentrification that has been occurring since Katrina; I found it very disturbing but was also heartened by her personal anecdote regarding property taxes in historically Black neighbourhoods. I think that everyone should take this tour when they visit New Orleans; we don’t have the right to enjoy this city’s offerings without at least minimal education on her history.

Thank you Kim for a great afternoon!
