Great museum. Enjoyed the artifacts and displays. Talk with the host/hostess and learn lots more about the building being firebombed. More exhibits out back.

A great little museum - well done!

We got a quick grounding into the history of Custer in this building, which was built in the Dakota Territory eight years before South Dakota received statehood. There are three floors of themed rooms, hallways, and hidden treasures. Between the top floor original courthouse to the basement jail, this museum (with elevator) is packed with historical trinkets. Learn about Annie Tallent - the first white woman in the Hills, and review the weaponry of that day. Get lost in the mine room - a dark hallway to resemble a mine corridor. The greeters were very friendly and so proud of their collection. We visited the museum on a hot day so it was somewhat cooling. We also toured it while waiting for a table at the Black Hill Burger restaurant.

Nifty!

This place was not at all what I expected, but I thoroughly enjoyed it & recommend it. I went on a whim, meaning I did not look at other reviews or descriptions, so I was expecting a museum relating to territorial law, et al. While the 2nd story court room is very cool, the museum is about many aspects of life in the area, not exclusively the law. I really enjoyed the exhibits & displays, & admission for veterans is FREE!

We toured this museum while waiting for a table for lunch. I loved seeing all the artifacts, especially the stuff about Gen. Custer. The museum is three stories and there is an elevator. Best $5 I spent on my trip!

This was an amazing Trip! My family was passing by and we saw the Court House Museum so we decided to stop by. I was a little apprehensive as I had 2 little kids with me, but it was well worth it. The lady at the front gave my son a paper with a code that spelled something out. He needed to find fairy doors that had numbers corresponding to the Alphabet so he can be entertained & kept busy while my husband and I toured the court house. I was super impressed with everything I saw. They had the actual seving Custer County court room from the 1800's, an 1876 Centennial American Flag & many more historical artifacts. The most enjoyable part of this museum was the amount of historical objects that were able to be touched including military uniforms from world war 1 and many "wild west" items such as a real stagecoach. This is truly and underrated gem.

The courtroom on the second floor was a highlight for me along with the judge's chamber. This museum transports the visitor back to another time with a unique collection of artifacts.

The building has a lot of history behind it. It is very interesting to see a building from this time peroid still around. It only takes a little time to look at it.

Lots of History

The volunteers are very nice and helpful. Loved the pictures of Custer from over 100 years ago and the history of Colonel Custer. Fee is $6 pp and so worth every penny. You can take pictures in there of everything you see.

Great local museum

For a small town museum, this one is very well done. But then there is a lot of history to this area to learn about. Even the old courthouse itself is very interesting. It is well worth the entrance fee.
