Beautiful carvings

This attraction is just outside of Custer. The museum is fascinating and there is also a gift shop with a few carvings and nicer upscale souvineer art pieces

Interesting Woodcarving, if you have time OR if you want to purchase an original item

Entry fee required to visit the exhibit and each visitor is given a wooden nickel to activate some of them. I thought the fee was kind of pricey, but it looks like monies are needed for upkeep of the exhibits which are very intricate. There is a video that talks about the history. At the end there was a gift shop where wood carvings could be purchased. Craftsmen were available and carving away, too. If you live in the area, there's even a club for people to learn the wood crafting. Interesting to stop in, if you have the time or are interested in purchasing wood crafts.

Not worth the money!

This is just another tourist trap rip-off. There was nothing "National" about it. It was the work of one man, and while he was talented, the displays were dirty and didn't all work. There was no woodcarver on site, but it was October (off-season). The gift shop had some very nice pieces for sale, which made it the best part of the place. We would not recommend this place. Admission was $10 per adult.

If you are anticipating incredible wood carvings by various artists of various subjects from incredibly beautiful woods, this is not the place for you. It is not a collection of carvings held as a tribute to the wood carving art form. This is a collection of wood carvings done by a former chiropractor from Denver during the 1930-1950 era. For people interested in the history or wood carving, it may be of interest. For those looking for examples of the art form, save the $10 admission fee and go to lunch.

The gift shop had cast plastic faux carvings and some real wood carvings, all very overpriced.

AMAZING COLLECTION OF WOODCARVING
okt. 2016 • Par
Whether you are a woodcarver or not, you can really appreciate the abilities of the carvers. The concept of the museum is to show off some of the best carvers & carvings in the country. There are thousands of woodcarvings which were brought together by one of Disneyland's original animators. Many of the carvings are animated and even speak. The collection is nothing short of amazing as you do not see this kids of skill anymore. There is a brief movie about woodcarving and things for the whole family to enjoy.

Memories of this place when I was little
sep. 2016 • Familie
We visited here with young children because I visited with my parents when I was young. It was not what I remembered. It is very run down, although still interesting the talent involved in creating these carvings.
Admission gives you access to the informational movie (not for kids) and the "musuem" itself. The museum consists of many different woodcarvings, some of which move when you put a wooden nickel in them (the nickels are included with administration). One thing to be aware of when taking small children is that some of the carvings are fairly graphic (for instance a carving of a surgery) and we chose to shield our young ones from those.

The gift shop attached is extremely expensive and really just sells carvings/artwork. We would not return but it did leave a lasting impression on me 30 years ago.

Enjoyable for people whom appriciate technical talent

True, at first I was expecting a National Museum, however, after learning the history of the museum and its beginning I excepted it. The age of this mechanical movement takes a rare talent. I can see how Walt Disney need Doc's help. Sure, not all the carvings were all that good, some were very good, but to think of the time and era - makes these a classic in history. If a single piece ever came up for sale, I would buy. Sorry the Museum will be closing as it is for sale. Perhaps it will be place somewhere more appreciated. Good Luck!

My Dad and I were blown away at the museum and the quality of the pieces. We even told a friend of ours who is a wood carver that he has to go and see this museum. Worth the Admission.

We loved this place

While driving to our destination, I got real excited to see this place. My friend immediately pulled over, and we are sure glad we did!! We learned so much. What a shame, this is a lost art. $10?? Well, let's consider air conditioning, lighting, plumbing. Come on, people, really?? I personally think it was well worth the $10. The displays were amazing. I would highly recommend it. It is a personal preference, but we really enjoyed ourselves. We were not in and out, we took our time and explored each and every display.

Awful! Smelled musty. Movie at the beginning was long and boring. Some of the mechanical moving carvings didn't work. Way over priced for what it was.
