There were originally three towns in this area at different points in time at slightly different locations. Most Thracian and Roman remains were destroyed when building the railway and town, and even in recent times construction and development is continuing to take priority over archeology e.g the archeologists were threatened by a developer when they found Roman remains where he wanted to build a retirement home. And the army club next door contains a Roman theatre but they won't give access to the archeologists and even bulldozed Roman remains on their land.
The very dedicated curator and head archeologist gave us a fascinating insight into the fortress. I would love to have seen a documentary with him explaining everything.
Next month there will be qr codes to scan with your phone to get a more interactive experience. There is info in English and a small museum, mithraeum and ww2 bunker.
I recommend buying the leaflet guide to read more information.
The entry is 5 leva, around 2.50 euro and although not much is left it is worth visiting to support the dedicated and under appreciated archeologists and to see the only Roman ruins left in the city.

Interesting place, but would be good to read about it in advance or get a guide so you know what you are looking at. It is a good idea to combine the visit with a picnic if you have more time as it is by the sea and there is a forest nearby so you can combine history with nature. The staff is really nice and helpful.

Just the outlines of the fortress foundations left, as well as those of a temple. Elevated position with a tower giving good views over the Danube.

Dayan, the local archaeologist, told us in details about the site and made us very interested in learning more about the place. Many historical layers in one corner in the northern city of Bulgaria. It is worth a visit, not a long one, but the discovery that the bunker is a Nazi headquarters has turned my stomach.

色順淨塔普里斯塔是一座古老的羅馬堡壘,位於多瑙河附近的山上。這博物館雖小,但工作人員很用心解答你的問題。

I have seen a great deal of fantastic Roman fortresses all over Europe and I was not impressed with this small but strategically located fort overlooking the Danube. However, I was very impressed with the energetic and welcoming curator. The fort was closed when our group arrived and after several phone calls it turned out the curator was called to the Bulgaria-Romania border to identify some looted objects from antiquity that someone tried to smuggle out of Bulgaria. That story was intriguing. But the fort was finally opened for us and we were shown the site. We also got to examined a WWII bunker with the inscribed name of a German doctor who had carved his name and date into a brick. Apparently the doctor had visited the site a few years ago and made the curator aware of the special brick. All the bricks had been whitewashed at one time. While the paint was removed no other inscribed bricks were found. If you are in Ruse this is worth a visit.

This so called "fortress" takes sbout 15 min to visit. It's mostly ruins and it's very small. Almost no signage and no explanations. The tower is nice, but the view is not that special. The only thing I liked was the German WWII bunker, that was pretty cool. Would not classify as a must if only one day in Ruse.

These continuing archaeological excavations are located on the Northwestern area of modern Ruse. While knowledge about the settlements dates back over 100 years, it is only recently that greater emphasis has been placed on pursuing serious archaeological explorations and developing the ruins into a modern museum, with signage that would make the site more attractive to visitors from all over the world. The ruins are located on a hill where it is believed ancient Thracians performed religious ceremonies. Pottery and artifacts made of bone, stone, bronze and other materials have been dated to the 3rd century BC. Some of the finds, originating as far as the Greek Islands, suggest that trade was an important part of this Thracian settlement. Roman documents mention the Fortress of Sexaginta Prista in the 2nd century AD. Historical mentions suggest the name is derived from the concept of port of sixty ships, and therefore a part of the Roman system of fortresses along the Danube, the outer border of the Empire, separating Rome from the lands of Barbarians. Some of the walls uncovered reached heights exceeding 21 feet. Important findings include temples to Roman and other gods, coins, pottery, ceramics, and domestic tools and utensils. The places has been continuously inhabited by Thracians, Romans and by subsequent cultures integrated into the Byzantine Empire and the First Bulgarian Empire. Ruse was built on the ruins and later expanded in other directions, converting parts of the ruins into a large necropolis. In 2015, the Fortress acquired new signage in multiple languages, providing much needed and improved guidance to visitors.

Came across this little gem by accident. It translates to "the port of the 60 ships" and is a significant part of Ruse's history. Ancient ruins can be seen above ground - I found out later that you can go down into the dungeon to see more
