Crazy aggressive local drivers. Numerous abandoned cars along highway. Lots of litter. Sad dirty shacks for housing.

We drove portions of this route northbound to Captain Cook on the west side and from Volcano to Waimea on the eastside, then down 190 to Saddle Road.
Along this road you will find amazing vistas from the ocean to lush farmlands. There are many roadside fruit stands and other local attractions. Passing through towns of Pahala, Captain Cook, Keaau, Waimea, Honokaa and many others.
But do not expect to get anywhere quickly especially in the morning heading into Hilo or in the afternoon heading out of Hilo. This areas traffic rivals the worst traffic in SoCal.
Portions of this road is designated as Hawai’i Scenic Byway “The Slopes of Mauna Loa” and passes through some interesting lava fields. It also provides access to Hawai’i Volcanos National Park

Driving this road was nuts! We kept exclaiming about how quickly we traveled from one diverse climate to another.
Our week on the Big Island had us on this highway a lot - starting our trip in Hilo, going to Volcano and then down around the southern side of the island through Kona to Waikoloa and then up through Waimea to Hamukea and Akaka State Park.
The views are spectacular and the diversity of topography so very impressive.
The road conditions were good as well, with many scenic view points to stop off for.
If you have the time I highly recommend seeing as much of the island, via this road, as you can!

This is THE road that goes around the Big Island. What it most incredible about this island compared to the others besides the sheer size is the number of climates and landscapes that you can experience in a single day on a single road.
There are lava fields, volcanic steam vents, dense forests, rainforests, towns of a homes, the only two major towns on the island, waterfalls, etc etc.
You will not be disappointed if you drive this loop!

Most highways in Hawaii are just two lane roads where the locals and visitors alike drive 10mph below the speed limit. If you're driving from one scenic place to another, don't plan on getting there in a hurry. You won't!!!
On the plus side, the asphalt is maintained very well. Lastly, what's with all the trash around the scenic vista pull-outs (especially on the other side of the retaining wall). It's completely disgusting. Doesn't the Hawaiian tourism board pay the sanitation workers well?

When you take Highway 19 along the coast toward Waimea or coming back from there, you encounter a totally different weather system with the clouds looming over the hills. We did not see such a dramatic change in weather as we did here during our drives around the island. When the clouds are around, there can be light showers of rain which is a perfect storm for rainbows. In fact, the clouds went in and out so much we were able to drive around to get a clear shot from various angles including one with both of us in it. How often can you do that. It's a beautiful drive especially if you come down from Highway 250 to Highway 19. The scenery is just gorgeous and was a highlight we found with our driving app that guided us down this route.

The scenic portion of the highway between Havi and Hilo was breathtaking! The winding road goes over falls and through jungle foliage.

今回はプナルウブラックサンドビーチに行くのに利用しました。
何時もながら良い景色の観光スポットや余り行く事の無いショップなどが多数あります。
ガソリンスタンドは意外と無いのでガソリンが必要な場合は何時もパハラの街中に一軒だけ有るガソリンスタンドで給油をし、ついでに飲み物を購入しますが、今回はパハラとプナルウの間にガスステーションとスーパーが有りました。
そしてコナ手前のカーブの連続は以前日本の観光客の方が正面衝突をして亡くなった所なのではみ出し要注意です。
暗くなってからは走らない方が懸命です。
