This is the nicest beach on the Big Island. Soft white sand, crystal clear water. Also known as Kua Bay--some of the reviews here are confusing it with another beach to the south. Great snorkeling on the right side of the beach. An easy place to spend the morning, with good facilities. Only issue is there aren't many shade trees if that is something you need at the beach.

Nice beach, but read the signs.. the road is VERY BAD. Like don’t drive down it in a car bad.. DRIVING THIS ROAD VOIDS YOUR RENTAL CARS INSURANCE POLICY! You may get lucky and have the damage to your car unnoticed on return, but if it’s found you will be responsible for the damage incurred.. it’s not an accident, your deliberately ignoring the posted signs about the road conditions and damaging the vehicle. Your personal insurance will not cover this! Hike it, bike it, hitch in, but don’t drive your rental in!

An absolute must see while visiting the Big Island. Thank God I rented a Jeep the path to take to get to the parking section is a totally bumpy ride!! I was literally going 5mph lol once you reach the end of the rocky path there is a parking section to park your car where you will begin to walk to the beach. Very easy just follow the trail. When I went no one was there!! I went around 9am. It was like I had my own secluded beach to myself it was heaven!!
There is a yellow rope tied to a tree where you can swing from. I walked further to the end and just enjoyed the beach and the view. So beautiful it’s a little mini paradise

My wife introduced me to this magical place several years ago while visiting friends in Kona.

So good. We try to return every year. Totally magical place with a unique energy. The ocean, the sun, turtles, seals and palm trees combine to make this place heaven on earth.

We were married here in 2018 which is testament to how much we love this place. We wanted to somehow become permanently connected to Mahai'ula and we did this in the best possible way.

I have travelled extensively throughout the world and this is the most beautiful beach I have visited.

Counting the days until we are there again....

First off, this beach is accessible via a mostly rocky and extremely bumpy road. It took us around 20 minutes to navigate to the parking lot from the main highway heading north to Waikaloa. Thankfully we were in an SUV but I felt bad for the Camero and Minivans we passed getting there. Once at the parking lot there is a rocky beach with bathrooms and interpretive kiosks to check out. However, the waves and wind were rocking there plus there wasn't actually any sandy access so we looked north to Mahal'ula Beach and noticed calm conditions so we headed that way. There is a lava rock pathway which leads north along the coast and the walk was about 10 minutes. Once at the beach we found a shaded spot with plenty of sand for getting a quick swim in. There were plenty of other people there and also in the water so we took our 2 kids with us and let them experience the ocean and waves knowing it was pretty safe to enter. We noticed some port-a-pottys on the way to the beach but there weren't any facilities near where we set up our chairs. A good beach that was a bit tough to access due to the road conditions. Probably would only recommend checking it out once during your stay on the Big Island to save your rental car from needing a tow truck. :)

...but a horrible access road. Wouldn’t recommend to go with a small or rental car unless 4wd or well insured. If it’s not too hot, the ca 1.5 miles are also not too long to walk.

It's best to have a Jeep or SUV to get there because the road is very rough. To get to the beach after parking you have to walk across some lava but there is a path. There are lots of trees and there were 2 monk seals on the beach! There were also turtles on the rocks. The snorkeling was okay.

This area was recommended by locals an we can see why. The scene is so serene and there is a lot of shade. Beach space is limited if crowded. There are restrooms and showers which are a plus and do tend to bring more folks. The surf was too much to enjoy the snorkeling which I hear is good here. We will be coming back in better conditions.

Yes, the drive in is terrible. Potholes abound, but everyone driving in has to take their time... easing between each side of the roadway, easing up a slope cautiously hoping another vehicle is coming up the slope from the other side. But it is worth it. You will see mostly SUVs taking the route, but I got there safely in a Mustang GT, so it can be done.

There is a paved parking area with bathroom faciities. A 5 minute walk past some ancient fishponds will take you to the incredible beach. To the right the beach extends maybe a mile around the bay. Big surf when we ere there and very blue waters with many sandy stretches on the shore. Great mix of people: families with kids playing, tourists (awestruck by the beach), locals stretched in beach chairs chatting beneath palms amidst the beauty. And numerous surfers.

To the left is a stretch of rockier beach which attracted a number of fisherman with lines as well as toss nets. You can feel that this area is important to the Hawaiian not only in the past, but currently as well.

The good part about the bad road is that the beach is not crowded. Agree with your significant other who will be driving and have faith. It is worth it.

The drive in is as bad as everyone says. You have to go very slow and it takes about 30 minutes but the beach is worth it. There is plenty of shade and it isnt crowded. We enjoyed a full day at the beach with toddlers. We even saw a turtle while we were swimming but don't worry, we kept our distance. Great spot for snorkeling and relaxing. There aren't any amenities other than some porta potties so make sure you bring everything you need!
