The menu here is exactly the same as the salmon bake in Juneau. It was raining the night we visited, no cover to speak of. Food was good. Show was in another area. Recreation of a gold miners camp looked authentic but didn’t spend much time there because of the rain. We opted to sit around one of the fire pits instead of attending the show. One of the employees tried very hard to get a fire started with wet wood; finally a couple of the tourists bought some dry wood. I imagine the group behind us had a great fire to sit beside. Good experience, rain interfered, but still had a fun time. Always nice people to meet.

Total waste of money. 15min trip on a battered old school bus on which we were told by the driver to get the salmon bake first. Only then to arrive 5mins before the end of the show, there not being another until after our bus left. Left dockside 12:45 and arrived back at 2:20. The guy cooking salmon didn't ever put enough fillets on the griddle so the queue for food took over 20mins. I complained and was pretty much told 'tough luck'. Save your money and avoid this trip is my best advice.

Whilst we hadn't planned to visit this whilst we were in Skagway, our other tour was cancelled due to the weather.
However, we were disappointed with the replacement offering which included a stop here - whilst the staff did their best to inject some cheer into a rather bleak afternoon, they weren't able to cover up for a pretty weak offering - a very short "show", some luke warm hot chocolate and the same gold-panning experience you can get at any theme park around the world.
I would pick somewhere else in the area if possible.

We went to Liarsville as a cruise tour. We booked the Klondike breakfast and gold panning. Uncle Merwin was funny and entertaining but that’s about all they have going on. The gift shop is very small, you will find the same merchandise in the many Skagway shops cheaper. The breakfast was good. Gold panning was very comical. You are given a pan with your dirt and gold already in, you wash and dump that’s it. The gold flakes at the bottom are so tiny they are hard to see. It’s something entertaining to do, but don’t expect to find anything if value.

We visited Liarsville as part of a packaged shore excursion. It's a tourist trap. There's a small recreation of a gold rush camp and a very corny show. This is followed by "gold panning," where everyone is given a bowl of dirt with some gold flakes to rinse in a trough of water. We skipped it.
The salmon bake was a disappointment. I expected far better salmon in Alaska. It had very little flavor with a mediocre sauce. The rest of the buffet was reminiscent of Golden Coral.

For me it was a waste of time. Salmon Bake was nothing spectacular, show was hokey and then the tour bus driver was confused and had to call another bus to take us back to the shop.
My recommendation is choose a different tour.

This place needs to be visited by the health department. Storing cold food that gets warm and serving undercooked chicken that made me sick!

Amazing place in Alaska to connect with the people who live here.
The actors stole my heart! Fun show, dancing, music. Great food too, salmon and cornbread (don't forget the glaze :). Tucked away in the woods in a magical spot rich with golden memories. If you explore around camp and you might stumble upon treasures you didn't know you'd ever find.

Probably the worst cruise ship excursion I've ever done. It was really a last minute hey let's do something excursion and boy did we regret that. Should have just stayed in Skagway. It was our third time to Skagway so we were running out of things to do. Bad on us for doing this.

Stopped by as part of a tour from the ship. It was Ok and. we joined in the fun but had I paid as a longer trip I would have been disappointed.

Do I need to have waterproof rain boots/gum boots for the waterfall/gold panning? Are regular running shoes or hiking shoes acceptable?

We are finding most excursions to be pricey, so we are only planning on doing one excursion through our cruiseline. We are a family of 3 adults (daughter is 18) and one child, which is causing most excursions to be over $300. Having said that, we also want to be able to enjoy the trip. I am wondering if there is an option to go to Liarsville and not do a meal as part of it. Can we walk or take a bus/taxi to the camp and tour it/pan for gold? If not, then is there such a place in Skagway that a family can pan for gold and learn about the Klondike gold rush on our own, without a ship excursion? Thank you.

I think you should call the company that runs liarsville and ask if you can come between shows. We did an excursion there with pancakes eggs and steak around a campfire. We were the only ones - and we found gold in the stream. It was great- and they have down time between the shows so they may be able to accommodate something else. Can't hurt to try!
