Pioneer Square was very historical as Seattle’s origin. Many of the buildings had older architecture. I took a tour of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park. I did see a lot of homeless people within this area.

STAY AWAY! It’s the straight zombie apocalypse. Druggies everywhere, shooting up, making drugs in alley ways and smoking crack everywhere. I have been to lots of cities with problems and lived in New Orleans. This is the WORST city I have ever been to. I stayed in Courtyard Pioneer square and had a view of crackhead ally where we watched dozens of drug deals, drug making, shooting up and smoking. We walked a couple blocks to eat at dough zone and only passed totally messed up people acting unhinged. Stay away from Pioneer Square, it will ruin your trip.

Over the decades, or even a century, Seattle became a modern metropolis and its center and main attractions moved little bit northwest among the modern high rises.
However, this area around Pioneer square is the actual early days downtown area.
In those times from mid 19c all houses were made of wood and were destroyed in the great fire of 1889. Rebuilding started immediately after, building brick houses we see today and shortly after Seattle's first skyscraper - Smith tower.
The area is also full of authentic bars where some big names of Grunge made their first steps and live shows. Several art galleries and many coffee shops.
From historic and tourist point of view here's the Klondike museum, excellent one and free, explaining the city boom during late 19c gold rush.
So, this area deserves some of your time as Seattle isn't only Space needle, Pike place and Starbucks.
Downside of this area I deduct one star for, are the homeless, junkies and other weird zombie like creatures. There're many of them - alone and in groups in street camps, on benches.... They wont bother you, but still it is not a pleasant site and I doubt I'd walk there at night.
During our 10 days Pacific northwest tour we got used to them in both WA state and Oregon, however I don't approve that policy and I think many people's businesses in such areas suffer because of that.

Architecture was interesting; but had a sad vibe like it's seen better days. We strolled here before catching the ferry to Bainbridge. Left the car in parking garage in pioneer square..... came back to busted out window.

Pioneer Square is not just a "Square" in the usual sense. It's a neighbourhood! We walked around and quite enjoyed the whole area. Historic buildings, nice little park with an ornate iron pergola and a host of other things. It's definitely worth visiting.

The interesting historic buildings are offset by the depressing number of street people camped under the iron pergola and along every street and doorway. It didn’t feel dangerous, but not somewhere we wanted to be. This seems to be an issue in much f downtown Seattle but Pioneer Square seemed to be the homeless center of the area, with a number of charity missions. Don’t bother coming here to see charming buildings, it seems to be reverting to the rough part of town it once was.

Pioneer Square is rarely mentioned as an attraction like Pikes Place Market and the Space Needle, but it is central to Seattle's history. This area is a must-see for Seattle. Seattle residents became proactive to save the history of Pioneer Square when they wanted to tear down the magnificent buildings to modernize. This area is great to walk around and explore and to enjoy a cup of coffee or lunch. While you're there, be sure to take an underground tour to truly appreciate the area and its remarkable history.

Felt uncomfortable walking around here with so many down and outs on the streets. We enjoyed Smiths Tower very much but Occidental Square put as I’ll at ease. We walked through quickly but didn’t feel safe to stop and enjoy the sculptures and fountains and this was mid morning

I had read some negative reviews of Pioneer Square prior to our recent visit so we were a little hesitant to take a tour of the area. The day we visited, it was very nice and we enjoyed the visit. There are a number of shady areas with seating to relax and a variety of shops and restaurants in the area.

Did the Underground Tour (Spiedel's) and waited in the park for it to start. It had more homeless than not. Watched 3 police and 3 public works standby for 30+ minutes while some social worker tried to get a homeless couple to decamp from a 2 bench area where they had been sleeping (illegal). After the woman physically pushed the counselor, an officer moved closer. They decamped to another bench, 30' away while the workers cleaned up the trash of thier site. I asked the on-site city parks proctor what precipitated the removal and he said "someone called it in". He was exasperated that somebody had the audacity to make the complaint, noting everyone was welcome in all parks, so long as they don't set up the cardboard beds and sleep, as this couple had. The couple was still sleeping on the bench 2 hours later when we finished the tour (which was interesting - wear a dust mask). I don't blame the proctor as he has to coexist with the addicts every day there.

Is this tour good for families with older children?

I would say no. This is no longer a family friendly place to go. Anywhere in Seattle you must be careful due to the agressive homeless population

Hello,
I would like to know if it is possible to visit the Undergrounds of Seattle by your own, or if the only option for tourists is to visit it with a private tour?

You have to take a tour. It is not a connected labyrinth and access points require entering establishments and going into their basements or opening alleyway doors with keys. Anyway, the tours are cheap and interesting and you will get way more out of them than if you could go by yourself.
