Great poetry selection, and excellent independent greetings cards. Small cafe at the back, loads of calendars ready for 2023

Extensive selection with helpful staff reviews posted with books. Excellent book-lover ambiance, lots of magazines (guilty pleasure), and positive and helpful staff. Don't know what you want? You'll find something satisfying. OR, you can wait until you get to the airport and have the latest business or romance drivel foisted on you. Your choice. LOVE YOU ELLIOTT BAY PEEPS!

I love supporting independent bookstores but was disappointed here today. First they require sanitizer at the door, but they were using scented sanitizer which was so strong I got a headache. Second it felt as if they were pushing a VERY liberal agenda based off of their offerings. There were so many books focused on sexual orientation. I’m totally fine with a diverse assortment, but they didn’t carry hardly any of the leading Christian bestsellers. I was also sad to see no “Christmas Book Display”. Third it was “dog friendly” and my son and I couldn’t even enter one section due to a hostile dog barking at us. Lastly some of the recommendations were some of my least favorite books from this year.

There is one place I ALWAYS go, even if I’m only in Seattle for an afternoon - Elliott Bay Books. I will travel down from vancouver just to go here.
A large, curated selection of books, lots of knowledgeable friendly helpful staff, a decent little cafe in the back. They also sell my favourite blank notebooks - Zequenz.
It’s hard to imagine being disappointed by EBB if you like bookstores.
As a bonus, the neighbourhood is busy, vibrant, and full of great coffee and food. Take transit or park your car and walk around for a couple of hours. Worth the effort.

This bookstore was huge! So much fun to explore the genres and highlighted/featured authors. There's tables and seating, and even a cafe area that looked chic and delicious. They apparently do tours, how fun! Would highly recommend visiting!

Elliott Bay Books needs to be on your list of places to visit on Capital Hill. It’s independently owned. The staff is friendly and helpful. They have a great selection of books.

The Elliott Bay Book Company is a rarity: an independent bookstore that survives, in the city where Amazon got its start selling books. Why? An large and carefully curated collection of interesting books in a wide variety of categories, including nature, fitness, outdoors, writing, graphica/manga, religion, and so much more. I find that it has the best collection of cook books for contemporary, international, and alternative cuisines, along with cookbooks for health. Upstairs is an extensive collection of biographies, history, travel, and bargain books. Plus there is a large assortment of quality magazines.
The EBBC experience includes easy chairs and a stylish but relaxed cafe that serves Seattle-quality coffee and baked goods (and doesn't pressure guests to move on).
Located in Seattle Capital Hill area, Elliott Bay is a reasonable 3/4 mile walk uphill from the Westlake Mall area or a short Uber ride ($7+ tip) away. It's close to Seattle U and the Pill Hill neighborhood.
Visit once and you just might find yourself visiting this Seattle institution time and time again.

I've been going to Elliott Bay for books for 24-years -- and they remain the best book store in Seattle, and one of the few independent book sellers to be doing well (at least so it appears).
This is a place to browse, to read a few paragraphs or pages, to read staff recommendations, to ask staff for assistance - you'll get informed help with nuance - a rarity these days.
And did I mention selection? Stores like Barnes & Noble have huge numbers of items stocked, but the choice available is really limited (surprising, but you have to go to a place like Elliott Bay to understand). Elliott Bay is the kind of book store where the books for sale represent a carefully curated collection, with depth and breadth and no compromises.
I hope they survive -- sometimes their prices are higher than Amazon, and that threatens their existence, but without this kind of bookstore, literature would be in peril.

The best bookstore I’ve ever visited, hands down! They had an enormous selection and a wide variety. Could have spent days on there.

Custard french toast at the Lost Lake Cafe on Capitol Hill is a delightful surprise. Each of the generous number of slices is drizzled with vanilla custard and garnished with a plentiful quantity of kiwi slices. The result is thoroughly satisfying.
