Striking architecture and impossibly cool library layout. Take the escalators 10 floors up… we took elevator down. Lots of comfy Adirondack and other seating on 3, and many, many places to plug in laptops or use a library PC. The study-tech carels on 10 are exceptionally impressive with several variations in flooring and fine City views.

One of the most striking Seattle buildings - ultra modern and beautiful architecture.
Have in mind if coming from sea level (eg Pike market) there's a very steep and exhausting climb uphill to reach the library.
Very interesting exterior with sharp, uneven irregular glass and steel design. Interior atrium like with huge open space in the middle. You can use the elevators to climb the top floor for city views (though little bit obstructed due to bldg design).
Lobby area is full of homeless people using it to heat themselves, charge their phones and use wifi or restrooms. They're not going to bother you, but still it's not a pleasant site.

Miss the coffee shop. I haven't been here in years and the last time I was, there was a coffee stand right inside, near where the gift shop is. Today I was excited to bring my husband in to show him and get a quick drink. No drinks to be had.
The library was still gorgeous and welcoming. None of the staff offered to help us find anything so we probably looked like tourists. Haha. We did buy some small items from the shop and headed out after checking out the 10th floor view.

Libraries have always been a huge part of our lives. But I don't believe I've ever been to one quite like this before. In fact, even if you'd never read a book in your life, there would still be something for you here. We'd read that a must-see/do is to take the elevator up to the top floor -- 10th -- and then look out the sides for amazing views of the downtown area and even as far as Lumen field! Also don't miss the atrium overlook where you can see down the center of the building, as it's set up as a spiral.
Finally, we didn't have a chance to check these out, due to limited time, but apparently they have music practice rooms as well, so you can try out the printed music they have on that floor! Wonderful :)

Seattle Public Library is a wonderful building. The architecture is astounding! We could not get enough of this place! The tenth floor is best for viewing the surrounding areas, and the views are trully amazing. It's a huge building and is obviously well used by so many people. It was very busy when we visited. It's certainly worth visiting.

Our hotel was 3 blocks away so popped in to check it out. Was closing in 30 min so took elevator to 10th floor. Beautiful sunny day, nice views, just a little freaky if you are afraid of heights. 9th floor has huge, topographic, cool globe right off the elevators. didn't seem to be much on 6, 7, 8 so skipped those. got off at 4 (red floor - like walking inside arteries) and went down escalators rest of the way. Worth 20-30 min if in the area, not your typical library.

Beautiful architecture outside and in. Ride the escalator up to the top and enjoy Rem Koolhaas’ delightful light and airy design.

La arquitectura de esta biblioteca es extraordinaria. Al entrar se aprecia mejor este diseno. Es bastante grande, varios pisos para mirar. El piso tiene inscripciones. Hay un gift shop con variedad de regalos para todos los gustos.

Visited this nice building on my way to the Seattle Art Museum. Very photogenic. Took the lift to the top floor for a great view of the reading hall down below. Plenty of space for users - the upper levels not fully occupied on a weekday afternoon. Well worth a short visit!

Hands up, I am an avid reader, a lover of books - the real, hold it, smell it, feel it thing and so a visit here was just such a treat.
However, even if reading and books aren't your passion, the architecture here is just stunning; a multitude of angles and facets and reflections, steel and glass, different levels and areas - it is a delight to walk around, and even more of a delight to see how well used this wonderful facility is.
Plenty of opportunities for amazing photographs and, provided you don't disturb those using the facility, no restrictions on where you can take them.
There is a shop and second hand book rack in the foyer, with profits going towards the friends of the library and a small café. Plenty of restroom and lifts for those who can't face climbing all those stairs.
Just beautiful.

There's actually parking in the building, but I suspect it is quite pricey. In general, you'll manage downtown Seattle better without a car. There is pretty decent bus service. And you can walk. It's a relatively compact city center (which makes it doable), but there are some steep hills (which may pose problems.)
You can actually avoid a lot of the hills if you know the buildings in the area. For instance, if you want to go from Fourth Avenue to Fifth Avenue, you can walk up the really steep hill or you can walk into the Fourth Street entrance to the library (flat entry, no stairs), take the escalator two floors up, and walk out the Fifth avenue entrance to the library (flat entry, no stairs). There are lots of buildings with public access in the city center that serve the same function.
