Had a blast biking the Coastal Trail! If you have a decent fitness level, you should be able to do the entire thing, as it's fairly flat. The views along the entire thing are stunning!! Plus great chances of seeing a moose. Absolutely one of my favorite things in Anchorage!

This is a great place for biking! Used heavily in some areas and times of year so it can get crowded!

Since we went in November, it was pretty chilly! It was a very nice trail, with various benches and signs. It was clearly very well taken care of as well. It was a little too snowy to see the mountain ranges, but it was still a very pretty view. I was blown away that this awesome trail was tucked in along the city. There are various parks and different areas off of the trail that you could venture through too. To park we just used a little lot at the beginning of the trail, and it had a fairly cheap per-hour rate that was common through the city.

The trail is easily to access and serviced by several local bike rental concessions. Right from the start it’s special with sweeping views of the seashore and bay. Twice we rode within a few yards of moose and we were still in the Anchorage city limits. All in all we rode about half of the trail before doubling back and enjoying the scenery again. I highly recommend the Tony Knoles Coastal Trail and a bike ride.

We were lucky enough to have a beautiful sunny day to enjoy the sights. We rented electric bicycles so we can enjoy the views just coasting along the 22 mile trail. We saw Mt. McKinley and lots of wildlife including moose. It was a great 4 hour morning ride.

Our days were so packed outside of Anchorage that I was afraid we would not have enough time. However with only a few hours to spare before our flight home we headed down to Pablo's Bike Shop and rented two bikes for an hour. We did not see any wildlife but the scenery was still very beautiful.

Good for casual hikes taking in the city views. Good chance of spotting wildlife - we were lucky enough to spot some whales.

You can bike, walk or jog this amazing trail that goes along the shoreline of Anchorage. Once you get past the airport you won't know that you are near a large city. The trail is full of wild life and scenic views. I rented a bike which allowed me to cover the entire 22 mile round trip in a couple of hours. You will find lots of picture perfect stops along the way. Pack a lunch and enjoy your day. The last mile at the end of the trail is steep so if you are trying to decide what type of bike to rent you might want to go electric.

Such a nice trail that is well maintained, marked and ever so scenic. Great to see that it is well used. We walked about 3 1/2 miles on it and enjoyed it immensely.

I biked on the trail today and saw what looked like muddy bear tracks. Are they fake tracks or is it possible a bear was there? Thanks!

Very possible, cannot believe that they would be fake...

Was it smokey while you were there? One of our party has asthma and we're trying to avoid the smoke as much as we can.

There was no smoke in the air at all. Maybe it was the time of the year, or the fact that there were no bush fires. I will say though, Anchorage is not the pristine, beautiful town that I expected. It rates up there with any other dirty big city I have been to. For fresh air I definitely recommend the cruise that we did from Vancouver to Whittier.

Gracias

The trail starts at the intersection of 2 street and H avenue, a short walk from the train station, which is near the port, but the port is large, so it depends where your boat docks. I suggest you search google for public transportation in Anchorage.

We will be in Anchorage the end of June and only have time to walk part of the trail. What part of the trail would we have the best chance of seeing moose, beluga whales?
Thanks,

I saw a moose in the early evening on the more remote portion of the trail past the airport. I saw no whales but I was on bicycle and did not spend extended time sitting along the shore line.

Thanks for your review...I have a question. Where do you access the trail? We are staying at the Marriott downtown the first night we get there (about 9:30 PM) and at the Cook Hotel the second night. Is it a good introductory walk ...is it close to either of these hotels?
Thanks

There are multiple access points - the trail runs along the downtown waterfront all the way to Ted Steven airport! Looks like the best access point for you in downtown will be West 5th Avenue from your hotel. Just walk towards the water and you will see the trail, which is very easy for novice hiker. Enjoy!

When you exit the Capt Cook Hotel onto W. 5th Ave, turn right (Westerly) and walk 2 1/2 blocks to Elderberry Park and you'll see the signs to get to the "Coastal Trail". BTW, before you get to the park, there are usually (seasonally open) bike rental stands that you can rent from.

I am coming to Anchorage this week (early May) and hoping to run this trail from kincaid back to anchorage. Do you think it'll be clear at this time of year for a run?

The trail is clear now for running. My wife and I have been running it this week. Have a great time in Anchorage. Try the Flat Top Mountain Hike while you are here.

Hi There. I will be traveling with my mom, she is in her early 70s. we will have about 2 hours to spend in Anchorage before we have to go to the airport, is this a good spot to spend the time? I assume we will only walk about 2 miles. what the best starting point, and more importantly, is there a way to get a taxi along the trail if we're out of time?
if you can suggest a better spot to spend in Anchorage - I will greatly appreciate it!
thank you!

If you are short on time, I would suggest to take a taxi (or Uber?) to Earthquake park and pick up the trail there to the shoreline and back. Go to GoogleMap and take a look and you can see the trail. It's a great walk.

This may be a silly question, but is there any danger to running on the trail in terms of wildlife? When I googled pictures, I saw a lot of moose. I'm planning on running from the start of the trail at W. 2nd and heading south for 3-4 miles to Earthquake Park and back. Thanks.

No moose are on that section. I encountered moose closer to Kincaid Park several times. You should be fine.
