We got to watch the 2023 ceremonial start in downtown Anchorage. It's a great way to be able to experience the grandeur of the event. The true race starts the next day at another point but I would try to go to both if you can!

We were at the celebratory start in Anchorage (March 4, 2023). Amazing atmosphere, beautiful and eager dogs, great teams and many spectators along 4th Avenue in downtown Anchorage. It was cold but sunny. As the teams started out, chears and whistling and clapping started all the way out of downtown. We also tried raindeer sausage at one of the vendors. GREAT EVENT not to be missed! The restart was next day out of Willow village.

Awesome event to see all 33 teams start in the ceremonial start in downtown Anchorage. Lots of people - including some in fur hats and costs. About 2 minutes between starts so about 75 minutes after start - all sleds were off.
If you were cold - you could shop or walk through Rays. We live in Florida but fortunately got great advice on layers and boots.
We walked down the street and got some better views of the sleds.
Food options for reindeer, bison, elk or beef dogs from several stands.
Awesome morning!!

This was an amazing trip. After 16 years of teaching the Iditarod to my students I was determined to make this dream come true. Attending the 50th Anniversary of the race was amazing. We waiting to see the official start, and it did not disappoint!

Pickup and the train station - taken to play with the puppies - dog ride on a wheeled cart - lunch - tour of the area with a stop at a glacier (warning hike is not easy) and final stop to see salmon at a dam. this is a must do option!~

So nice to see theses dogs and learn about them and the Iditarod race. Wonderful facility and so much fun getting to hold a puppy. A must if you love dogs!

My job required me to take clients to the Iditarod. I've always been against it. Almost every year a dog dies, so one person can win a chunk of cash and a pickup truck. Watching it locally on the news, with the charts, graphs, interviews, footage of the rest stops, you can see blood trails where the dogs paw pads have cracked from the ice and snow. They say the dogs wear booties...but they fall off during the race. I went to this years ago...but tripadvisor doesn't give me the option of putting in the CORRECT DATE. My hope is that it has improved for the dog's sake. I do not recommend you support this event.

If you are in Anchorage on the first Saturday in March, the Iditarod Sled Dog Race starts. This is a must see event and experience. Downtown is the ceremonial kick off point for the race each year. You will need to head north out of town to see the actual starting line event.

Attending the start of the race twice has been a highlight. I never would have thought it is as reasonably priced as it is to attend the start. All the participants are so nice and their dogs are so well cared for. Attend the mushers' banquet and autograph time beforehand. This is like attending dinner with both teams and Hall of Fame members the night before the Super Bowl.

I've followed the race since it started and seen the changes. Two complete generations and then some of mushers and dogs that live longer than most people would expect.

How does one get a ticket to the banquet with the Mushers? Can this be done in Anchorage right before?
Thanks

We will be visiting the area the last weekend of July. What can we do here? Some reviews mention petting the dogs & learning about the race, but I don't see anything on the website. What am I missing?
Skrevet 21. juni 2018
There are visits to dog sledders and other attractions. Some people helicopter up the mountains to go sledding in the summer. Try the Anchorage tourist board website for further details.
Skrevet 24. juni 2018
Can you visit in the summer? We will be there in June. I don't see anything on their website about admission.

Are there actual dog sled races during the summer months? Looking for the last week in August 2018

We will be in Anchorage on August 9th ... We will be staying at the west mark Anchorage Hotel on 720 West 5th avenue. We would like to know if you are close to this hotel. I understand that you pick up and drop off... Could you also tell me how much it costs for 2 adults and how long is this excursion, as well as the time you start. Do we need too book this excursion before we arrive. Also how shall we dress...
Thank you so very much

Hoping to take my wife to see the start and official start of the race. Planning on staying only a few days. Please advise on the best way to accomplish these things. Hotels? Traveling to Willow? Dress? Photo ops? Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hi George, first lets me say, keep your finger on the weather pulse for both Anchorage or Willow. The weather can take extreme swings good and bad. Regarding lodging, my wife and I were pleased with the Sheraton wedged between 5th and 6th ave, great access to downtown Anchorage but I would also encourage making your reservation early regardless where you stay. As far as your mobility, being from PA, I'm sure you're accustom to driving on snow covered roads. That said, I would recommend renting a vehicle and drive between Airport, Anchorage and Willow. It's an easy drive and great for spontaneous Kodak moments. Dress, well unless your participating in the Polar Bear Challenge, I highly encourage dressing warmly and layer if you plan on being outside for extended periods. On the Kodak moments, that's a personal preference call.
Hope this helps

After following the race for years my husband and I are going to the Iditarod race this March. So excited. Heard how important it is to layer clothes, like how many layers? What are the best boots to wear to keep warm and dry?
Skrevet 23. oktober 2016
Thin socks, with thick wool socks over, then very good, water proof boots, with thick soles. Mittens are warmer than gloves. Ear band with a hat on top will work but a hood is better. A coat that covers your buns is great too! Seeing that you are from Buffalo, you will probably handle it better than most people. Drinking warm drinks helps a lot too. 4 layers sounds about right and the bottom layer should be something fairly thin because some places are really hot inside. Have fun!
