I loved sitting here for the longest time just watching the float planes come and go. What a relaxing place. Was crazy busy about 5pm. Had not idea there was such a thing as floatplane rush hour! Loved it!

Lake Spenard is an active SeaPlane base.
It's unique in that you are able to easily drive all around the lake with lots of place to park and watch all the aviation activity.
You'll likely never see more floatplane and seaplanes anywhere else in the world than here in Anchorage!

The beautiful Lake Spenard has magnificent views of the Chugach mountains and there is even a hotel there which fronts the lake. We watched a lot of sea planes taking off which was a real thrill. Like the adjoining Lake Hood, it had many types of planes parked on its’ banks.

This is one of my favorite places in Anchorage to relax and watches many float planes take off and land. On a beautiful day in the afternoon park your car near the Aviation Museum or anywhere around the lake and just sit and watch the planes. I like the afternoon when the sun is shining on the Chugach Mountains and planes are flying! You can also sit at the restaurant at the Millennium Hotel on the lake (inside or outside) and watch the planes. Very relaxing. Guests love to see this too.

Spent a pleasant afternoon sitting on the side of the lake marvelling at the skill of the many small plane pilots taking off and landing on the lake.
A good way to spend a restful couple of hours watching life on this busy lake fly by.

Gostei, mas ele é bem bonito quando tem sol, dai os aviões sobem e descem. Quando o tempo está nublado e frio não vá porque não há movimento nenhum e as fotos ficam feias. Ali há um Hotel chamado Milenium ou Lake Front que tem um café de frente para o lago, bem interessante tomar um café ali. O hotel não recomendo como já fiz na devida avaliação.

Interesting to see the sea planes parked and how they're stored. Little storage sheds at most of the "stalls". I drove around the lake. Need to be careful, it's an active airport, but not a lot of activity going on.

Out in the near vicinity of the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, you have one area or venue or attraction that is, in an overall sense, composed of two separate, individual lakes with a connecting waterway between them. One lake to the East is Lake Spenard. The other lake to the West is Lake Hood. The connecting waterway is the Hood Canal.
Here in Anchorage there is a tendency by the locals to throw a figurative blanket over the entire area and call this one area Lake Hood or perhaps to call it Hood Lake.
My photos in this post show Lake Spenard proper, either in the background behind some float planes or in the immediate foreground. I am posting both some summer, autumn and winter photos. My wife considers this to be an excellent attraction. I consider it to be average. So we have compromised and are rating Lake Spenard as a very good attraction.
To be honest, in the spring / summer / autumn months, when the lake is a lake not a frozen sheet of ice covered with snow as it now is, it truly is an excellent attraction because of the action and the noise and the excitement of the float planes taking off and returning.
IF you, as a visitor, visit Lake Spenard, you certainly may want to also see Lake Hood, the Seaplane Base and the Alaska Aviation Heritage Museum.

Lake Spenard is an amphibious plane center. All around the edge of the lake sea planes are tied to the shore. Every hour a sea plane is taking off our landing. Excursions can be booked. Off in the distance is Anchorage International Airport. How this sea plane center and an international airport exist alongside of one another is mystifying.
