A refaire!

Overall we were pleased to have had the experience of canoeing down the Sorgue as the river is absolutely beautiful.
However the river was full with inexperienced paddlers so was not as peaceful as we’d imagined…
We received no safety briefing from kayak vert and no instructions. There was a guide with us at all times and the river is very steady so we didn’t have safety concerns but I think that was perhaps luck rather than judgement…

I’ve been doing this trip for many years and without fail come to do this kayak trip when I’m in the area. My partner has never been to the area before so this was one of the planned highlights of the trip. It didn’t disappoint - the river is so beautiful and I find the staff pretty helpful and they speak good English. Most stuff is pretty common sense, but I think it’s worth reading the instructions beforehand as the staff are pretty relaxed about the whole thing. If you are too, then this is great. If you’re not, then I can see why this is a bit off putting.
It takes about 1hr15 - 2hrs depending if you stop for a break. Try to take in the scenery as it’s really beautiful. It’s not one for rushing down the river. Some really shallow parts where you may need to get out and push, some deep parts with overhanging trees so just try to keep straight. Having been before, they used to make you get out at two weirs and navigate steps then collect your boat that they chucked down the weir. This was always a bit worrying for some in my group. However, it seems to have changed so that now, they have constructed man made “mini waterfalls” that they help you to navigate. They are no bigger than a child’s playground slide. You will probably get wet but nobody in the group should be nervous about going down them (they’re pretty fun).
As for getting there without a car, we came from L’Isle-Sur-la-Sorgue which is well connected by train and bus, so you could even travel from Avignon, Nîmes, etc. Be careful though. The name of the train station at L’Isle-Sur-La-Sorgue is L'Isle-sur-Sorgue - Fontaine-V. But don’t imagine you can get to Kayak Vert easily from the station. There is no bus to Fontaine de Vaucluse. You will have to:
A) contact Kayak Vert by phone or by email and ask them whether they can collect you from La Sorguette campsite (the end of the Kayak trip) and shuttle you to the start point in Fontaine de Vaucluse. You will have to walk there which will take about 40 mins along the Route D’Apt, although I’d recommend the back way along Avenue du partage des eux as there’s more of a pavement and fewer cars for most of the way before you have to rejoin the Route d-Apt. Obviously, once you finish the kayaking, you’ll have to head back on foot to L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue the same way.
B) Get a taxi. The L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue tourist information website has a list of taxi services. You will need to call them. It cost us €20 which feels a bit steep given the length of journey is about 15 mins but since it’s a bit easier than walking it’s fair enough. You will need to wait outside ‘La Poste’ opposite the Robert Vasse bus stop in the centre of L’Isle, about 10 min walk from train station. We also got the taxi in the morning so that we could see the village of Fontaine de Vaucluse and get some food before our 14h30 kayak trip. It is well worth the visit and the kayak centre is about a 15 minute walk from Fontaine centre, on pavement all the way.
Overall, great experience. I think they should explain all this about how to get there by taxi/walk then shuttle bus, but probably most drive so fair enough.
