This was my 16 year-old daughter's favorite site on our visit to Springfield. Our tour guide was very informative and shared a lot of background research on the family and items in the home. We saw 3 levels of the home, including the servants' quarters in the attic and the tour lasted 1.5 hours. Visitors were able to walk around the rooms in the home, not confined behind a rope. There were a few pieces of furniture roped off, such as the courting couch used by President Lincoln and his wife, Mary. This is the home of Mary's sister and her husband. It was a very interesting tour and we recommend it.

Our tour guide Eileen was incredibly informative! This was truly one of the best tours we had during our trip to Springfield.

This is an excellent spot to visit. The docent I had was very informative, the home is in great shape, and there is an art gallery and an art installation adjacent.

In our travels from coast to coast, my wife and I love to visit old homes and cemeteries and battlefields and other historic sites. Edwards Place isn't a popular go-to destination in Springfield, Illinois, not like Abraham Lincoln's home. But it is one of the oldest homes in Springfield and it has some curious ties to Lincoln. Located at 700 North 4th Street, the house was built in 1833 in the Greek Revival style. Additions in 1836 and 1843 and a major renovation/expansion in 1857 created the Italianate house that is preserved today. It includes bracketed cornices and a cupola with a skylight. The house, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1969, once was a center of social activity in Springfield. Lawyer Benjamin S. Edwards, son of Illinois governor Ninian Edwards, owned the house and prominent citizens and politicians such as Lincoln, Stephen A. Douglas, David Davis and numerous governors, judges, lawyers and politicians were entertained at lavish dinner parties and the grounds played host to many summer picnics and political rallies. The house hosted guests who came to Springfield for Lincoln's funeral in 1865. Several of the Lincoln family's possessions are on display in the Edwards house. Edwards was brother-in-law of Mary Todd Lincoln's sister Elizabeth. Although the Lincolns didn't court or marry here, the house is currently home to the "courting couch" on which Lincoln and his future wife sat during the early days of their romance. It was originally the property of Ninian Edwards. A full-scale renovation in 2014-2015 restored the first floor to its 1857 appearance. Today, the museum interprets the social and domestic life of the Springfield that Lincoln knew.

Edwards Place is owned by the Springfield Art Association. You begin your tour at the Associations entrance, where your docent dramatically leads you from their working area through a large portal into a time warp of another day. Our docent was very knowledgeable on her surroundings, and nicely tied in the home's owners with the building. The home is not furnished with its original contents, but interpreted to represent 1857, and furnished with examples of Victorian furniture, including some pieces that did belong to the Edwards family. You will see, however, the authentic "Lincoln Courting Couch" relocated from the parlor of the Ninian Edwards home where Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd were married, and a piano that was likely played at their wedding.

Great Unique Experience! I feel like this is a hidden gem in Springfield. We had a wonderful detailed tour. One of the few historical houses you get to walk through as it was without parts being roped off. A lot of Lincoln aspects. Love that he had spent time in the house & includes some Lincoln artifacts including the courting couch & possible piano that played at his wedding. Any history or Lincoln fan should take the time for a visit. Beautiful one of a kind experience

Our tour guide was amazing. I love touring old homes and hearing the stories about the families that lived there. I would highly recommend. They are very accommodating and scheduled a private tour for our group.

The tour guide was excellent. She was full of information and her presentation was very good. I love history so enjoyed it from that perspective. My wife loves old homes with unique furniture and architecture and she enjoyed it from that perspective. Glad we chose to visit.

Unfortunately the contents of this house was not preserve. Even though past from the family too and art Society then back to a museum the contents from the family were not preserved. There are some of their belongings that have been pieced back together in the house but unfortunately most of the true history of this house has been destroyed. Tori took about 2 hours but was mostly telling stories about the people and their friends not the true history of the house itself or any of its architecture. Worth the price but not an amazing stop

What are the hours of operation? How long is the tour? Thank you, Carole
Skrevet 17. juni 2017
I am not sure of the hours but the tour is roughly 1 hour. Except with our guide she ran over by 30 minutes or so because she couldn't stop talking and not taking questions.
