While on a motorcycle trip following historic Route 66, I was finally able to visit this Frank Lloyd Wright house.
The home is nearly 12,000 ft.² and incorporates all of the best of Frank Lloyd Wright Prairie style architecture. It helped that the person who commissioned Haus basically gave him an unlimited budget.
Our guide, Mike Mueller, was excellent. He’s done his research and convey his knowledge perfectly. He even mentioned despite giving tours for the last four years he sees new things all the time.
No photos are allowed inside the house and I think that’s a good thing. I think if you’re making photos, you’re not really paying attention to the house itself.
If you’re a fan of Wright, this is a must

An extraordinary property with the original furnishings. The tour guide did a great job explaining Susan Lawrence Dana’s life as reflected in the house.

The Dana-Thomas House in Springfield, Illinois, also known as the Susan Lawrence Dana House and Dana House, is a residence in the Prairie School architectural style designed by the noted architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Built in 1902-1904 for the philanthropist Susan Lawrence Thomas, it is located at 301 East Lawrence Avenue and reflects the mutual affection of the patron and the architect for "organic architecture" which stressed congruence between the interior of a building and its surroundings, the relatively flat landscape of the state of Illinois and the Japanese aesthetic as expressed in Japanese prints. The house, located in the state capital's fashionable "Aristocracy Hill" neighborhood, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976. It was designed for both display and entertainment with an arched doorway admitting guests into a series of expanding spaces, transitioning from vestibule to the reception hall, windows placed to continually draw the attention of someone within toward an awareness of the outside and more than 100 pieces of free-standing Wright-designed white oak furniture. Wright designed 450 art glass windows, skylights, door panels, sconces and light fixtures for the house, most of which survive. The west wing leads visitors through an interior Torii gate into two of the largest rooms in the house and the upper-level gallery was used for musical entertaining. The home, believed to contain one of the most intact Frank Lloyd Wright designed interiors in the United States, underwent a restoration in 1987-1990 that restored the structure and its contents to its appearance in 1910. It remains the preserved and most complete of Wright's early Prairie School houses.

Absolutely beautiful! A must see if you are an architectural fan. The most original Wright furniture in any of his houses.

Whether you have an interest in Frank Lloyd Wright or not, this house is definitely worth a visit. The extensive tour is free with a reservation. Our guide, Kaitlyn, was a font of information on the house, the owner, and society at that time. The architecture is unique. It's worth a visit just for the gorgeous woodwork and art glass throughout. The highlight of our recent Springfield trip.

Friend and I took a tour of the Dana-Thomas house while visiting the Springfield area for the weekend. We had about a dozen people in our tour group as well as our guide, who was very knowledgeable and informative. The tour went through almost the entire building and took approximately an hour from start to finish. You need to schedule your tour in advancce, but admission is free.
As for the actual experience, words don't adequetely describe the uniqueness of the buildings design, so I'm going to leave that portion for you to experience yourself. However, I'd highly recommend checking out this house. Very interesting sights to see, and I rather enjoyed the history tied to it.

Fallingwater in Pennsylvania is probably Frank Lloyd Wright's most famous work, but this beautiful home is even nicer in many ways. We've visited several FLW houses, which we admire for their form and sheer cleverness, but usually come away thinking that we would not actually want to live in them. This one is different.
This was the home of a socialite who loved to entertain. There are large impressive spaces and many kinds of innovations that are familiar to FLW fans. The library is wonderful.
This house has been wonderfully restored, but also has much of the original furniture and many windows.
You must book a tour in advance online, but it's free, and it's easy. The guides may or may not be volunteers, but they are extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic. For security and other reasons you cannot take pictures inside, but it would also be difficult to capture the feel of this place by images - you really need to be there.
The tour only lasts an hour or so and it takes you through the home's most important rooms. There is a gift shop across the street, which also has books in case you want to take home images of the interior.
This is a terrific site for FLW followers, but I think just about anyone would enjoy the visit. It's also not terribly far from other sites in Springfield, including the state capitol and Abraham Lincoln's home.

The prairie style house was built in 1902-04 for Susan Lawrence Dana, a forward-thinking socialite. Over 12,000 sq ft, 35 rooms and 16 varing levels. The house was built around orginal family home with preserving the family parlor which remains in a victorian style and has an orginal fireplace. Butterfly and sumac plants that are found in the prairie are visible in each room. The dining room and party room have a barrel roof and a balcony for musicians. The party room has print tables to showcase artwork instead of hanging them on the walls. Connecting the main living quarters to the party room/library is a sixty-foot long pergola hallway. Lower level has a bowling lane, billiard room and walk-in vault. The largest collection of Wright's furnishings and glass work. The tour offers wonderful stories of Susan Dana over the years and Wright's vision. Tours are limited to 15 and reservations can be made on-line. Tour is free and donation box in lower level of house. No interior photos allowed.

Is this house open for tours due to covid 19?
Skrevet 28. mai 2020
Hi... I am from the Springfield area but live in Uganda. I would say that it isn't since the Illinois governor has closed down everything. He is letting restaurants open on Friday the 29 May. I would check the website. I know a lot of people from Illinois spent Memorial day weekend in Mo, Wisc and Ind. Good Luck. She is a beautiful house.

Check out the Dana-Thomas website. Also, from the website: ‘Parking is available in the site lot off of Cook Street just west of the YMCA building. Drive west past the Y, over the railroad tracks and turn left into our lot. Parking is free. ’

I will be in the area and would like to tour this house. I will be there on a Tuesday in November. I read that it is sometimes closed on Monday's and Tuesdays. Does anyone know if this is true?
Skrevet 9. oktober 2016
The site is open year round Weds.-Sun. and seasonally Mon. & Tues. The website doesn't say when the seasonal ends. The best thing to do is call 1 217 782-6776. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

No set fee just a donation. I think $10 per person would fair and kids free

Can people in wheelchairs go on the tour? I remember paying for a tour of a Frank Lloyd Wright house in Chicago, and as the
tour started I was told to stay in a room not on the tour, waited there for over an hour, and they would not give the money back! I
have a feeling this is the way in this house. Even though I can walk for about 10 minutes I do need to rest.
Skrevet 23. juni 2016
I am a guide at the Dana-Thomas House, and for those in wheelchairs, there is an exterior lift to the main level by way of a porch on the north side. A wheelchair tour is limited to that level, but it allows the visitor to view the reception area, dining room, living room, Victorian room, and perhaps a few other areas, without negotiating stairs. If the guest can walk short distances, there are folding chairs in other rooms (Mrs. Dana's bedroom, as an example) on which they may sit as the tour reaches that area.
