No visit to Skogafoss is complete without getting up here and walk along this most wonderful trail. For us not only the more amazing attraction than the Skogafoss itself, not for us this was the most stunning and magical place we've seen in our time in Iceland. It's just out of this world. The valley, the mountains, the river running along it. Right beside the walking/hiking track. Non-stop stunning views and landscapes. And lots of more incredible waterfalls along the way.

I really can't praise this path enough. Pictures don't do it justice enough. It's just breathtaking.

The stairs leading up to the trail can bit a bit wobbly when it's windy. But that shouldn't stop you. Up here it's less windy and there are a lot less visitors than at the fall. It was actually surprising that we only met a handful of people when we were walking along the trail that afternoon. Even though it being one of the most popular hiking trails.

Most of the trail is fairly flat and easy. Later on it gets a bit more muddy and narrow with some slippery sections. But with some solid footwear it's all no big deal. You could walk the whole path for miles and miles. It goes on up to 22 kilometers.

You just park down at the free Skogafoss carpark. So you got unlimited time to enjoy this trail.

One of the - if not THE - most rewarding trails we've ever hiked/walked along. An absolute must-see and do. Don't miss out on it.

Beautiful trail with lots of waterfalls. We did the 5 or so miles to the bridge before turning around, and it was worth every step. Beautiful landscape that rewards your hike with frequent new views. We were very tired by the end of the hike, but the footing was mostly very secure and we noticed very few actively steep spots going up. Highly recommended hike - one of the best we have done in Iceland, with so much beauty for a very reasonable amount of hiking effort.

Wonderful hike! I hiked it in 2 days due to my injured knee with 15kg backpack. Had to stop at the hut for a sleep. The trail is very well suited for less experienced hikers - clear markings, no steep elevations. The only thing you have to deal with is the weather. Rain coat, waterproof pants and very good boots are a must. I also recommend a pair of waterproof warm gloves and hiking poles. Keep in mind the wind up there is very strong, barely could stand on the feet one day and at night the wind broke two tents. Even if you planning to stay in the tent at night up there, like me, reserve the place in the hut, for a cases like this (expensive, about 70 euros, but reserve well in advance!). Also, I rented a personal location beacon for an emergencies at Reykjavik.
I'd divide this hike to several parts (from Skogar to Basar):
1. Skogarfoss to the bridge - easy walk
2. The bridge - the hut - moderate walk - you walk on the 4x4 road with less suitable terrain - large stones, uneven surface.
3. The hut - The decline beginning - moderate walk - walking on snow fields, bad weather - strong wind, rain and the mist, but very unusual and beautiful.
4. The decline - Basar camping site - easy walk.
Basar, as all of Thorsmork valley, is charming - nice places for a tent, no wind down there, beautiful surroundings. I enjoyed it very mich.

It was challenging but fun to hike this trail. Interestingly a small eruption happened here I was early 2010,just before the larger eruption of a name I can not write down. It is a beautiful hiking trail so far away from society. Those reading this really should not let this trail be left off the bucket list in Iceland.

Our best hike on Iceland and is for free. We only went to the bridge 16 km in all - amazing. It is a little hard.

Around every bend there was another beautiful scene. We only did about 5km in from Skogafoss, but saw 5-7 different waterfalls. Clearly marked section of the trail, relatively flat after the initial stair climb to the top of Skogafoss.

Looking forward to coming back and doing the entire hike!

Certainly one of the most beautiful treks done in Iceland. Having more days available you will arrive in thorsmork. The trek starts right from the stairway above the Skogafoss waterfall and enters a surreal, very green landscape, where it seems to live in a fairy tale. We only traveled 7km (one way) and encountered a series of incredible waterfalls, one more beautiful than the other (and of a much higher level than Skogafoss). it rained all the time so on the way back we slipped several times. Absolutely deserves to be seen. There is not a large influx. Free.

Gratuito.

I am writing this review because I don't feel that the reviews I read for this hike prepared me for the experience. I am 55 and have always enjoyed hiking. We generally hike 5-7 miles or so on the hikes we do, often with significant elevation, and love the US National Parks, and Switzerland. In Iceland, we hiked Glymer Falls and Landmannalauger (Mt. Brenistrada), as well as other similar day hikes. I am also afraid of heights, but only on sheer drops and it has never interfered with prior hiking. Glymer Falls, for example, has chains to assist hikers around some funky terrain, but that was fun, not intimidating, and Mt. Brenistrada had some really steep parts. We did this hike in one day. I thought that this hike would be more physically taxing than what I was used to, which it was. It wasn't simply that the hike was longer than other hikes. The hike is between two glaciers and had extensive long really steep terrain and much of it was on gravel and sometimes ice, which made it more difficult to maintain balance. What surprised me, however, was how mentally taxing the hike was on me. There were areas where I was terrified. There was one sheer drop around a set of rocks where my entire foot didn't fit on the path. There was another part with chains and a sheer drop which also was well above my pay grade and was terrifying. One hiker we met on the trail was late for the final bus from Thorsmork and she commented that she didn't know the hike "had so many death defying obstacles". That being said, I know that no one has ever died on the hike, and my 17 year old son did the hike with me and had no issues and loved it. I just wanted to state that you need to be a real hiker to do this hike or be prepared for its difficulties. It is not for people who have a fear of heights unless you go in with your eyes open mentally prepared for the challenge. Finally, we did the hike with a private guide (Midgard) and had an amazing guide. I don't think I could have finished the hike without her guidance. All that being said, I did it, it was one of the best days of my life, and I will never forget it.

This is a 25km hike. You need some proper clothing and especially shoes. This is a real hike, not some “improvised sporty walk”. Can be done in a (long) day but be wary, there are many steep sections that require strong knees and you better not have fear of height! The steepest sections have chains so you can cling to if you don’t feel comfortable.
I did it in 2 days so I can enjoy the views longer and have a nice rest at the Utivist mountain hut.

The hike was strikingly beautiful, despite the bad weather. It has a mix of green pasture with dozens of waterfalls, volcanic chaos mixed with snow, and finally a lush fairy tale labdscape.
This is an experience that you won’t forget.
