1st suggestion- put the Visitor center in your GPS. If you just put the Preserve in you may be driving around quite a while to find the entrance as we did. Several others had done the same thing. When the GPS says you reached your destination you are likely not going to be able to get internet and switch directions. We were glad we had an old fashion map.😀 The park is beautiful and the hikes are nice. We did the Little River Falls hike right out of the visitor center. Water was not much in the waterfall when we were there due to lack of recent rainfall but it was still a great hike and a great view. They have a very nice visitor center with a store. Wolf Creek overlook had a great view of the canyon. Mushroom rock is right in the middle of the road so that’s pretty cool. Glad we stopped here!

We drove through the park and stopped at the waterfall. It is an easy walk and a nice picture location. We did not do the scenic drive, but the area is very scenic.

My husband and I rented a cabin in Mentone, Al (we are from Florida and needed to cool off), so we had to check out this park since it was so close. Our first stopped was the Little River Waterfall. It is an easy walk from the parking lot to observe the waterfall and boy oh boy, it’s a pretty one! People were lounging on the rocks and swimming in the pools over the waterfall, so we put on our swimsuits and headed down for a swim. It’s a little bit of a steep, rocky hike to get down there, but it’s really not too bad. The water was probably around 80 degrees and it felt amazing! My only complaint - people are leaving wet, baby diapers all over the rocks. Why??? It’s gross and no one wants to look at your garbage - Do better! We also drove along the scenic Little River Canyon Parkway. It was a nice drive (lots of turns and twists), but there were so many trees along the rim, you could not see much of the canyon. There were like 5 scenic stops along our drive and we stopped at one to have a picnic. The view from this particular spot was pretty impressive (it was where the River in the canyon bends). I would totally recommend this park and bring a swimsuit in the summer.

What a beautiful place!!! I loved the deep canyon walls which led to the rippling waters!!!!Such a variety of plants, shrubs, and animals on site. It was truly a breathtaking moment for me to look down into the canyon!!!

I highly recommend this place for travelers who like to see a lot of natural beauty without needing to walk very much. We visited here in March, which I would also recommend if you want to see lots of water in the waterfalls. Of course, this means that it also rained on us during our visit...but we did not mind this at all. It just created a mist and made everything seem very mysterious. We stopped at the visitor center (which is extremely new and nice) to pick up a map, and immediately drove across the bridge to walk down to catch the views of Little River Falls from the bottom. There was plenty of parking and it was just a short walk to the viewpoints. Amazing waterfall! Being from the west, I never thought such a place could exist in Alabama. We also walked across the bridge just for fun. At this point, we hopped back in the car and meandered down the main road...following the river...stopping periodically at viewpoints and sites indicated on our park map. The views down into...and across the canyon are spectacular. And the sounds from the torrent below made it difficult to leave each spot. The road is a bit windy, and some of the pullouts have horrible potholes, but we didn't mind at all. It made everything like an adventure. Our adventure ended on a high note as we were able to see Grace's High Falls with lots of water spilling over it. Again, this is only something you can see during the springtime. After seeing this, we felt like we had seen enough, so we turned off and left the park rather than driving all the way down to the end of the canyon. What a great drive!

We drove through the scenic drive and enjoyed seeing the river and canyon at each overview. The falls were beautiful. Great slow paced drive to enjoy.

Nice waterfall to visit. Easy to get to. Unfortunately, not a lot of water flowing during our visit. Some climbing was required but nothing extremely strenuous for a senior citizen. You are able to get close to the falls if you want without safety concerns. The bridge crossing the water leads to another trail which we did not explore. Might want to visit after rainy season.

this is a place I hope to return to for a longer visit. Very easy walk to see the falls. If you look to the left of the falls, you will see a mill wheel. This was a really exciting find. Weather was perfect. The visitor's center was one of the cleanest, friendliest that I have ever been to. Wealth of knowledge that the rangers have.

Are the roads paved?

Yes...the roads are paved and in good shape. The pullouts are a bit rough though.
We will be traveling through
Fort Payne. Would it be possible to pit stop though and see the falls with kids in ~30 minutes?

If you want to stop and see the falls, it could take a little longer, because by going back thru Ft Payne, you do some backtracking. Here is a shortcut and might make the round trip about 40 min. Exit 218, right turn on hwy 35, follow that thru town. It will turn right and go up the mountain. You will cross hwy 89 and the falls are about 5 miles ahead. On the way back, when you get to Hwy 89 turn right, immediately you will turn left on Beason Gap Rd. Follow it downhill, when it dead ends, turn left, then the first right. This will take you to hwy 11, turn right and follow signs to exit 222 I-59.
Another option would be to go straight on hwy 89 thru Desoto State park you will want to stay there sometime. Stay on 89 until you get to Desoto Falls, turn right. Visit the falls, 8 min, then when you come back, go straight across hwy 89 and take that short cut down down to I -59. I take the scouts up there on the way to summer camp and we usually spend two days there, hiking, swimming

Is there kayaks available to rent at Little River?

Little River is a whitewater river. There are 3 sections, upper-experts, upper two (lower two) advanced, and chairlift to canyon mouth park is intermediate with a couple class IV rapids.

What are the must see areas to see in the park?
Solo Nutiket
28 bidrag
That all depends on your conditioning. You can drive along the scenic highway, walk and view the water fall, go swimming at the falls, or "little falls" all of which are fairly easy to get to, or rappel and climb cliff's, whitewater kayak the river, basically for experts and advanced paddlers, and there are a couple of hiking trail. Need more explicit info, find solo nutiket

The waterfalls have a boardwalk that is wheelchair accessible; if a wheelchair is an option since she can’t walk far. There is a beautiful overlook of the falls so it would be well worth it. If that isn’t an option you can see the back of the falls as you drive over the river. There is a large parking lot next to the boardwalk and it isn’t too far of a hike to see the falls. The boardwalk was very helpful for me. The scenic drive has many overlooks that don’t require walking but a few feet. I have a bad leg and can’t walk long distances and I was able to enjoy this park immensely. I wouldn’t definitely give it a try because it is a beautiful place.
Can you visit at any time of day or is there restricted opening hours?? Thanks!

Have you been fly fishing in the Little River Canyon? What have you caught?
I've never been fishing there and have never seen anyone else fishing. You could probably fish with a simple rod and reel, but fly fishing would probably be difficult in this area.
is it possible to swim somewhere in the little river canyon national preserve?
