This is one of 4 Harvard museums of science and culture (HMSC)The other 3 are: Harvard Museum of natural history, Collection of historical scientific instrument and Harvard Museum of the ancient near east.
Established in 1866 as one of the first museums of anthropology, the Peabody Museum currently cares for a large and historic collection of anthropological materials from across the globe, including more than 1.2 million individual cultural items, 500,000 photographic images, and associated archival records.
These items originate from and can teach us about peoples and cultures from across the globe, both past and present. The broad and diverse collections have come from a variety of sources since the Museum opened in 1866: archaeological excavations and scientific expeditions, individual souvenirs and collections acquired while traveling, items exchanged and traded between various individuals and groups, historic pieces passed down through families, purchased from individuals and companies, as well as from other museums. The Peabody continues to research the various histories of each piece in the vast collection and strives to transparently contextualize and care for them through its commitment to ethical stewardship and sustainable practices. In this process, the Museum welcomes the input and research of community stakeholders and the wider public.
There are 3 floors in the museum.
Floor 1 is the Hall of the north-american Indian, the legacy of the Penobscot canoes, and the Lakota images of the contested west.
Floor 3 is Resetting the table, encounters in the Americas and Other special exhibits including Asia and Central America (including parts of Mexico), Climate change and Earth and planetary sciences.
Floor 4 is “All the world is here”
This is definitely a museum to visit.

I feel like there could be more information given to make points of interests more, well, interesting. I feel like it was lacking for it's size. The layout was a bit confusing. To me, it lacked a flow I think most museums have to present the exhibits to you. It was more of a free layout that I think did not suit it. There also wasn't much to see in the grand scheme.

Overall, it's okay.

Well worth a visit from Boston. Impeccably curated exhibitions and thoughtfully presented. This told a story which was really well articulated.

The first floor exhibition is good and interesting, while the rest felt a bit confusing. Or tried to cover too much in too little space. Still well worth the visit.

This museum is attached to the Harvard Museum of Natural History and one admission fee covers both. It was a wonderful place with things you don't often see in other museums.

This museum is connected to the Harvard Museum of Natural History. I paid 15 dollars for one ticket and got both!

This museum focuses on ethnology, anthropology, and archaeology, particularly of the Americas.

When I went, there were exhibits on North American indigenous people (with real belongings of Sitting Bull). They have exhibits on Inuit people (I learned a lot about how colonization affected them and how that was related to Harvard and the explorers who eventually made it to the North Pole).

There are exhibits on the Aztecs and Mexico. Tons of totem poles, art pieces. And this is one of the first museums I’ve been to on peoples of the Americas that really worked to educate me on culture and how each piece was used. The “religion” or “belief” (for lack of a better word) behind things. Displays were well written, not too wordy, but really helped me learn more about their ceremonies, dances, and culture.

There is also an exhibit (hard to find a good synonym for that word) on the museum’s role in the World’s Fair, which has many exhibits on Oceana, Asia, and the Americas. Something that struck me here were sculptures of a man and a woman that were reportedly made after measuring and observing many of the average American people. The woman was ultra feminine and the man masculine. These sculptures were brought to the world’s fair to show the difference between white people and “other” people. It was quite enlightening on the climate of the time.

There was also a section covering Harvard and food/dining. Interesting and did work to highlight the privilege of wealthy white men entering Harvard in the early 1900s.

Check out the Central American stelae. They are accurate castings in plaster. The original ones have degraded from exposure to weather, so reachers come to Harvard to see the best examples of stelae.

You might be unaware that you can find two great museums on the Harvard campus in Cambridge, MA. We were pleasantly surprised to visit them both (paid one price). Great way to escape a cold New England afternoon.
